After the troops had gathered who were able to serve the king's army in the draft, the training had commenced in full. James and the generals of the Hylian Army, along with the Hylian Knights, were tasked with whipping the lay populace into shape; that frustration and worry the citizens were feeling was several times as powerful in the higher-ups' minds; the six days of initiation into military life were delivered with a profound lack of mercy.

Link, Ambiance, Relma--even Lorant!--all of them sweat and toiled and were broken in their own way from the life they knew, for such was the looming certainty that all would be made desolate by the invaders from the other world. These shadows... They crawled into the waking world and threatened to take up a permanent residence over the sun, in front of each lamp, replacing the glint of each warrior's blade...

From out of the tent crawled James, furious and flanked by two of his best men. They were the ones from earlier, who with him became generals rather than policemen when the chips were down. He took a swift, terse scan of the area and confirmed for himself just what they were in for--perhaps just sizing it up--and started snapping orders like some bigshot at some would-be four-star restaurant--if not for some terrible reviews by you-know-who--before sidling up to Ambiance with a bolder, harder line than he previous displayed, for jaw and spine.

"Put this on." He was holding a mask down somewhat low, still watching as the avalanche with teeth bore down on them. "Some of the soldiers reported a burning in their lungs when they inhaled that fog."

It was around this time that the first of the Shadows tore into the lines of infantrymen at the front. It was like watching a bull run through paper mache. The Commander rushed off, presumably to rally some of the soldiers, meanwhile the Hero of Legend was tumbling down the side of a hill, trying to catch the enemy before they got to camp.

His sword was glowing; it was the only indication that he was really alive in the cloud of destruction up ahead. The men weren't fairing so well. Each time they managed to kill one of the brutish beasts, they just came right back up, stronger and faster than before it seemed. Whenever Link struck them they stayed down longer, but even that wouldn't mean the Hero could keep this up forever; though the look in his eye might suggest otherwise. Link was imbued with a new kind of determination. Cut him, bite him, break his legs even! The Hero wasn't slowing down.

The mages, some versed in healing arts, were a great asset. All things factored, the battle looked as though it might go on forever. The magicians who could do more fancy tricks, like gravity augmentation and such, were few, but strong. When too many of them fell the Commander would surely call a retreat.

But before all this could play out, Ambiance would have to concern herself with what would happen when they finally broke through into camp. The generals waited, holding their swords white-knuckle in the grip of their mind, evening out their breath so as to strike clean through the scenarios and into a true focus. Believe me when I say this was the only time these men could truly be "in the moment."

... And finally, it happened. The dam of "volunteer" soldiers cracked, and in poured the inky fog--literal fog--of war. About five of the creatures were running toward the tents were Ambiance was.

Oh, if only I could have been there
I'd be a hand for the sinking

It had been a long day, none could question this. She really hadn't expected this to be her life. She was from a neighboring region. Labrynna was not called on for recruits as they were so far distant. She was amazed that she had been selected to work alongside soldiers. Even as a tactician in training, she was nowhere near the picture of a soldier or leader. Nevertheless, with training and the lessons that she was being put through, she felt herself slowly getting stronger. She could wield her blade with greater confidence.

Was it practical to think of home at such a time? Whether it was or not, her thoughts were distracted from the task at hand from the thundering and monstrous sounds that were terrifyingly familiar. She barely registered that the commander stepped outside. Suddenly at her side, after barking out other orders, she was handed a mask. She took hold of it, surprised that her hand didn't shake. She affixed it to her face, almost tasting the familiar mist and wishing to avoid having it afflict her a second time.

Her eyes focused on the charging creatures. The golems that were boulders in motion. The behemoths that milita were simply underequipped for. This wasn't how she wanted the field to be arranged. People were dying. Was this the best way to fight?

She drew her sword and held it in both of her hands. She set her stance and prepared for the creatures to join them. Her training as a warrior began only a few scant weeks ago. Most of her time was in the tent and among the generals and learning tactics and the craft of war.

I might die today, she thought to herself. She took a breath that was filtered through the mask around her nose and mouth. Goddesses, see fit to guard Hyrule this day.

She focused on Link's glowing sword for but a moment. Finding comfort in seeing that he still fought, she decided that this was not the time to wait.

I wish I could protect you here
Oh, please don't cry, now, smile

The carnage seemed to compound itself as it went, snowballing deaths and screams and blood as the horde burned their way right through the Hylian lines until they were in the camp, eating it up like acid. This was because the men, a composite force of Hylians and others from across Hyrule, as a result of breathing the strange fog, had all at once gone mad.

All of them, either by slashing wildly at hallucinations or by a more sinister turning of the mind and their loyalty. Some of these tore and clawed the faces nearly completely off their compatriots; some were berserk gorillas, stampeding and squashing the other brave soldiers in the most brutal ways; some impaled killed and died in a paranoid whirlwind of blind, frantic slashes and stabs. Wild, unearthly shrieking followed the darkness wherever it went, and the men, if they were strong enough to resist the effects of the fog, were soon worn down and slain by either their own brothers in arms or the enemy. No thanks given to those who lost their minds either, for they met the same end.

At the height of the bloodshed, with the Hero of Legend buried in the swelling brutality, a lone figure marched through the center of the field just as the commanding officers were being attacked.

Ambiance and the upper echelon of the army were targeted next. Shouting, telling them all to get to the point designated, with fast carriages to speed them away to Termina in case of such an event, cut through the din of destruction.

"A valiant effort, my friends." That voice, now out of the darkness and standing before the beaten Hero and the swirling, feasting horde, was attached to the one they had always been told to be wary of, the one they called The Gerudo King: Ganondorf Dragmire. "--But I'm afraid there was simply nothing to be done." As he walked, and as he stood there jeering the Hylians, Ganondorf was attacked by ever manner of shadowy beast in the horde, but each collided and bounced off a red kind of forcefield, only made visible in that instant of work.

The Hero, a few paces from the big gerudo's boots, was out of patience for such posturing just as he was running low on stamina. Did it stop him from picking up his blade again?

"... Oh? And the nice lad from Eldin is here as well." Ganondorf shrugged, sighing and turning away about ninety degrees. "But I couldn't call this courage 'legendary.' I wouldn't go so far as to call this boy a 'Hero.'" Link would have no more of this. Fumbling, the lad stumbled through big strides at the large, dark man and thrust his sword desperately at Ganondorf's chest.

Easily parried. More slashes. Ganondorf held Link in front of his face, chuckling through softly parted smirk, watching the fight drain from the Hero's eyes. Link was kicked, flew, dropped. Struggle...

It was like watching an adult beating a child. Link stammered to his feet again, lunging at Ganondorf, only to have his momentum shamefully sidestepped; there was a haunting laugh from the king of sand. "All that you see is mine, boy! It is fate..." He began pacing.

"Long ago, when I was but a dream, I was a prophesy--you were too, Hero. It was said that I would come again... And again... Until all was returned that was taken from me. Imagine my greatest joy when I, lowly King of Thieves, realised that this was the life in which my power would finally be fully woke!" A small gesture of his hand and the ground beneath him saluted and gave him his space, cracking and falling apart. "This is the moment I was born for! The moment I--"

From out of the grey sky came a comet with blue and silver swirling stripes. Whatever it was, it seemed to grow a foot at the last possible instant before collision with the Gerudo King's cheek.

Like a billiard ball, the dark man was sent flying from the impact; the faceless figure in stripes flipped backwards several times and landed perfectly on its feet. Its hair was straw, its face was a blank moon with odd tribal markings in red and blue, its limbs were wiry like that of a scarecrow; and as it turned around to nod to Link, a wicked, toothy grin and a familiarly menacing chuckle echoed through the Castle Town square.

Ganondorf didn't stay down long, and before anyone knew it the two were at each other's throats, flying and pouncing and bursting craters into the area. Link scrambled to his feet. His sword lost its glow. Soon enough, he was at the carriage where a couple generals were waiting with the Princess to depart.

Skull Kid was routing the Gerudo King. Every turn, every motion, was more agile, faster, stronger. His magic, performed with a quick wave of his staff, now a mystical double-helix of what could be described only as solidified light in blue and white, made the Shadows erupt with glowing hornets that assailed Ganondorf without mercy; his beams overpowered the gerudo, pushing him into the cobbled pavement again and again.

... But... The king would never stay down for long.

"We have to leave now!" The coachman could scarce keep the horses in line. With a snap of the reigns, they were off to the Faron province, to a land they hoped could keep them safe.
