After the damage to the buildings during the last Great Catastrophe (which could, at this point, be anything on any day.. the dorms always got jacked) more rooms had opened up away from the dark, dank depths of the dungeons. They really didn't suit Chris. Time flew and it seemed he'd been here near two years so moving up in the world, or at least in living arrangements, was on the agenda. If he never thought Deus gave him anything, they did at least finally give him this. He only had a single box and a duffle bag of clothes as he came to his new door. It was no different than the rest lining the hall on the first floor, except the door was newly replaced and still smelled a bit like wet paint. The door was cracked so he toed it open and shuffled noisily inside as his things jostled and bumped the door frame.

The door beside Chris's room opened.
"Oh!" said Merric, stopping short. His hands were raised, fingers working to finish tying the tie he had looped around his neck earlier, pulling silk fabric through and around to finish it with a neat knot underneath his collar. He didn't recognize the young man shuffling into the room next to his own, but he offered him a smile anyway.
"Hello! Would you like some help with that?"

Chris always seemed to look surprised when people talked to him like an actual person. It didn't seem like he ever got used to it, or at least not yet. "I um.. I only have this box and this bag?" His eyes drifted to the deftly secured tie and realized he had never learned to tie a tie, but didn't say anything. Why would he need a tie anyway? "I'm your new neighbor I guess. Been in the basement for a couple years-" Except the loose hunter coat falling off of his shoulders still bore the basic stripes of a trainee. He also neglected to share his name, not even thinking of it.

"Here, I can take that, if you'd like," Merric offered, gesturing at the bag, and then reached out and deftly lifted it from the boy's grasp, sliding the strap of it over his shoulder and giving him a smile. "It's always easier when there's someone else."
He peered curiously into the room, smelling paint, then wrinkled his nose.
"I didn't realize the basement provided shelter," said Merric, sounding both surprised and a little concerned. "Well, I'm glad you've managed to move up, being cloistered away in a basement doesn't sound suitable at all. Oh, I'm Merric, by the way," he added, and would have given his hand to shake, if the other's had not been full of boxes.
"What's your name?"

"Sure, um.." Chris wriggled the strap off his shoulder and let Merric take the bag. "I'm Chris.." He had a weak handshake anyway and was better off with his hands full of things. He moved into the room where it had standard white walls, standard dorm furniture, and an empty closet. The paint smell still permeated since no one had opened the single high set window. Chris set the box on the desk and moved to the window to struggle with the latch and push it open finally. Rain or not, he needed airing out. "Yeah I guess they ran out of room up here for a while and people go into the basement when they are new.." He wasn't really sure but rooms had opened and he took advantage. "It's really kind of depressing down there. And there's like torture devices?" His brow furrowed in displeasure.

Merric filed the name Chris away for later remembrance and followed the other into the room. It looked, for the most part, exactly like Merric's did - which was to say that it looked very plain and small and very much like a dormitory room, minus, thankfully, a roommate.
He set the bag carefully down onto the floor, not wanting to disrupt anything inside, and said, "Well, that's unfortunate. I didn't realize there were so many people here at all, it seems - "
Merric's head turned back to Chris, brows drawing together.
"Did you say a torture device?"

"Yeah like, one of those rack things?" Chris's hands spread, "Like in the spanish inquisition or something. I thought I saw one of those iron things too.. you know it looks like a lady and is full of spikes?" Chris laughed lightly, "Sounds kinda crazy up here in the sunlight." A hand ran through his hair and it was very clear the dark brown of it was dye because his roots were very blonde. "How long have you been here?"

Chris was given a startled look. "An iron maiden?" said Merric, aghast. "Do you mean one of those racks they used to pull people's limbs off? They have those in the basement? What on earth for, have they been used at all? Is that a form of punishment here on the island?"
He wasn't actually sure he wanted to know the answer to that question, come to think of it. Merric said, "It's very much a better place here, then, if that's how the basement is."
A hand lifted, Merric idly tugging at one of his cuffs. "A few months. Not long at all," he admitted. "I was sort of...thrown into everything unexpectedly. What about you? You said you've been here a while, haven't you, if you were living in the basement all this time?"

"Yeah like in the movies?" Chris smiled small, like the idea was a bit goofy, "But they are down there.. I swear. It's kinda creepy.." Which is to say, yes he was in the basement a long time and hadn't made any effort to correct his situation. "I was," Chris's box was put on the desk but what was unpacked was very limited. A couple of journals that he swiftly tucked into a drawer and writing implements and a very limited amount of snacks he'd procured and squirreled away. The Fruit Roll-Ups were clearly from off-island. "I haven't done much here. I guess just be a basement troll and do chores," He wasn't even particularly good at fighting and the though had stirred Jack in his mind who grumbled and made Chris wrinkle nose as he toyed idly with the silver earrings that served as his totem.

He very, very sincerely hoped that no one here on Deus was going to be forced into an iron maiden as a means of punishment. Or drawn and quartered, or put on the rack, or any other forms of medieval torture that would likely result in a lot of screaming and pain.
"Well, I'm glad we're both up here," said Merric, taking a breath. Chris was unpacking, slowly, putting things into place. The Fruit Rollups were given a curious look but Merric moved his gaze back to the room itself.
"What sort of chores, if you don't mind me asking?"

"Oh you know like.. minipet cleaning and fixing things. Sometimes I work in the cafeteria.." before it was destroyed and rebuilt. "Sometimes I just carry things for people," It didn't sound much like the job of a valiant battler of the supernatural. He didn't mention any missions or fights or anything. "I'm not cool or badass or anything.." No record of scars from his adventures. He barely had a good rapport with his weapon. "How are you liking it here?"

Merric raised his eyebrows. "All you have to do is carry things for people?" he asked curiously, head tilted a little to the side. "That seems a little...I'm not entirely sure, underwhelming might be the word? Unless there's just a great deal of things to be carried."
His hand rose, idly moving the ring around his finger, and offered Chris a small smile.
"I don't think everyone here is cool or what have you, but it seems there are many who are quite impressive in their own way," said Merric. "I've been slowly learning more about being here, it's been...quite the adventure, I'd have to say, I'm not..." He paused, "used to it."
That was an understatement.
"Do you...ever find the whole..." Merric gestured to his head, "weapon thing a little...odd?"

"There are whenever something happens. Like the dorms get destroyed or everyone falls into a coma.." Which happened. He was supposed to be shocked by those happenings and he had the first time but after that he just sort of went with it. Chris seemed to nod to what Merric said about the people, not being cool but impressive, and he wondered if he would ever be someone anyone considered impressive. He didn't think so. Merric looked cool already though. He was very stylish at the least. "It's super weird," Chris laughed a small bit, "My weapon is kind of a bully but it's not like he can do anything in my head..." And he was used to aggression, as sad as that was.
