Who: Shoshana, Phoenix (Beerrito), Mark (HaiLaSin)
Where: Ambrosia in Durem
When: Late Monday morning, August 7th
Weather: Incredibly mild and comfortable

- - - - -

Ambrosia was surprisingly slow that morning, even if they had just opened a short bit ago. An elderly couple was dining in a corner booth, a young woman at the bar, and a family of four at another table. All of them spoke quietly, and the music playing was soft, so altogether the atmosphere was calm.

All of this was appreciated by the owner, who was looking through some things at the podium at the front of the restaurant. Any other day he probably would have been in the office at that hour, unless things were busy enough that he needed to assist with other work, but he'd received a call from a certain Chester Mourly about meeting with an employee of his to discuss some business-related matters. He figured with as slow as things were he would wait up front, briefly taking over as host while he did so.

Floating about the restaurant was the young Frei, Shoshana, who frequently helped her father. At the moment she was carefully carrying about a pot of coffee to offer the elderly couple refills. She was quite excellent at being a server, although she did still occasionally forget boundaries and ask the people dining in a few too many questions when she got over-excited.

After seeing to it that everyone was satisfied for the time being, Shoshana joined Phoenix at the front of the restaurant with a serene smile. "He should be here soon, yes?" She was more than a little bit excited about this visitor, although she wasn't entirely filled in on all the details. Then again, Phoenix only had a vague idea of what they were meeting about as it was.

Checking his watch, the silver-haired man nodded. "Should be any minute now! Would you mind checking in the kitchen to make sure everything's coming along?" Assuming the man they were meeting was there on time, bread and appetizers would be coming out fresh just in time for them to sit and nibble while they discussed business. As always, Phoenix intended to break the ice with food.

Shoshana nodded firmly and floated away, her fins twitching with anticipation.

Mark enjoyed what he did. Bringing smiles to young faces as he wowed them with a simple sleight of hand, funny song, crazy act or exactly the design they wanted painted on their face was a source of great satisfaction to him. What Mark didn’t enjoy was getting a call from his boss telling him that he needed to magically fly himself half-way across town in order to make an important business meeting that was scheduled only fifteen minutes after his prior appointment. He didn’t even have enough time to grab an actual piece of paper to write the address on and had to settle for writing it on the napkin he had lying around in the company van.

Which -- by the way Chester -- was a pain in the a** finding parking for thank you.

Thankfully, traffic had been light, most people no doubt preferring to take advantage of the pleasant weather to wear in their shoes a little bit and the trip had only taken him about ten minutes. Parking had been a bit more difficult. The size of the vehicle combined with how the city set up their parking spots requiring him to circle the area twice before pulling into a spot roughly four blocks down and walking the rest of the way with his disgusting napkin in hand and his guitar case filled with his guitar and any company paperwork strapped to his back.

“Ambrosia. Ambrosia.” A pause, a quick glance up at a the name of the shop he stood in front of, “Ambrosia! Found it! Hold this for me won’t you bud?” Folding the napkin, Mark lifted it up to the white-headed capuchin that had been crawling about on his shoulder the entire time. Immediately after the paper’s presance had registered to him Chittery’s tiny hands moved to snatch it from his fingers so that the little beast could sniff at it before promptly shoving it straight into his hair. “...thanks for that.”

Sighing to alleviate his frustration, Mark took a brief moment to make sure the shop had nothing in the ways of a ‘No Pets Allowed’ sign on their door before stepping into the shop.

The fact the place was nearly empty was the first thing he noted and begrudgingly he had to admit Chester’s choice in time was ideal. There wouldn’t be much in ways of distractions keeping them from talking business when they hadn’t yet reached the lunch rush. The second thing he noted was this was undeniably a Greek restaurant. Authentically Greek. So Greek that Mark wondered if he had stepped right into a little slice of Athens right here in Durem.

He could dig it.

The man at the counter was also undeniably Greek and Mark’s lips cracked into a large grin as he offered a large, friendly wave. “Good morning! I, uh, I’m here because my boss Chester said he had business he wanted to talk with the owner? Not sure if he mentioned my name but I’m Mark Howitzer?” Adjusting the strap of his guitar on his shoulder and stirring Chittery enough for the monkey to switch to the opposite side the younger man continued to offer a pleasant, friendly smile as he waited for the hosts response.

Chittery was not as patient. The monkey was a naturally curious creature and the new location was causing the animal’s eyes to constantly shift from one new person to another. Training told him that if he left Mark’s shoulder without permission he would not get peanuts but the presence of other foods was growing more and more tempting by the minute. As if sensing the monkey’s desire to dart, Mark lifted his hand to settle it softly on the furry little body. Calmly, his fingers stroked at the black fur and drew the animal’s attention away from the restaurant and back to his handler. All the while Mark remained standing there in wait of Phoenix’s reply as if this was something he had done a million times before.

The arrival of the expected guest was one thing, but Phoenix hadn't expected his furry companion. For a brief moment when Mark walked through the door Phoenix stared with wide eyes, mouth gaping slightly. It occurred to him as the pair approached that he was gawking, and by the time Mark spoke Phoenix was giving a warm smile. Chittery's presence was unexpected, but by no means unwelcome.

"Mark Howitzer! It's a pleasure to meet you, welcome!" He gushed, extending his hand to shake. "I'm Phoenix. Phoenix Argyris. I own the place." Eyes floating to the creature on Mark's shoulder, the man gave a bit of a chuckle. "And who's your friend?"

Just in time to catch the tail end of the greetings, Shoshana rounded the corner from the kitchen and caught sight of the curious-looking duo. A soft gasp escaped her lips and she sped up, zooming between the tables and narrowly avoiding a collision with one of the servers. The near accident seemed to go unnoticed by the Frei however, as she didn't stop until she reached the front of the restaurant.

"You have a monkey!" The Raevan wasted no time in pointing out the obvious, forgetting her manners entirely. They'd had service dogs in the restaurant before, but never a monkey! Another gasp and she placed the tips of her fingers against her lips, her wide eyes unblinking. "We were expecting you, yes?" She turned to Phoenix without waiting for Mark to answer. "This is the one, yes?"

Phoenix laughed heartily, giving their guest a bit of an apologetic look. "This is Shoshana," he introduced the Frei, barely getting the words out through his laughter. Phoenix had long since accepted that his daughter, as hard as she tried and as much as she had learned, she still had her moments of excitement where she completely forgot her manners. "Shoshana, this is Mark. And yes, exactly who we were expecting! Plus one." He grinned widely.

The reaction to Chittery was to be expected. Monkeys were uncommon pets even by Gaia standards and certainly one didn’t tend to bring them into restaurants for business meetings. Thankfully the host didn’t seem immediately disturbed or upset by the animal's presence so Mark carried on as he normally did, his smile only growing as the host introduced himself as the owner of the restaurant.

“Hey, no, the pleasure's all mine man.” Beaming, he slipped his hand from Chittery’s fur in order to shake the offered hand in the hearty manner Chester had taught him. Firm but not tight, short but not brief. A good handshake meant good business. “This here is Chittery. I guess you could call him my assistant or partner. We’re kind of a packaged duo at this point. Don't worry, he's clean and for the most part well behaved so he won't make any messes in your restaurant.”

The monkey’s eyes met Phoenix’s, its head tilted to the side as the pair observed each other before a young, effeminate voice drew the gazes of both parties elsewhere. The sight of the young Frei certainly took both by surprise, Mark’s look of brief shock at the floating ribbon ‘legged’ child was comically expressive and Chittery’s muscles strained as they resisted his urge to leap onto Shoshana’s shoulders. The human recovered first, letting out a chuckle as he waved off the girls strange features as just another of the zany species that made Gaia their home.

“I do!” He laughed, hand slipping away from Phoenix’s in order to once more rest upon Chittery. The animal was visibly struggling not to leap on the Frei but the soft touch seemed to calm him slightly. Shoshana was just like any other girl who had come into contact with Chittery for the first time. It was a dance Mark had done a million times before made no different by the fact that the girl in question wasn’t human.

It was hard not to laugh himself when Phoenix’s mirth was so prominent throughout their introductions and the girl’s innocent sense of curiosity was vibrantly splashed across her face. “Nice to meet you Shoshana. And yeah, I do have a monkey. His name is Chittery. If you’re interested and your dad says it’s okay,” he glances towards Phoenix for confirmation, “I’ll let you hold him for a bit once our chat is ov-woah hey no!”

It seemed Chittery had other ideas than Mark’s initial plan of letting Shoshana hold him after their meeting had concluded. The animal had slipped out from under Mark’s fingers to leap onto the Frei, the weight dipping them both briefly even as the monkey’s curious fingers began to poke and pull at the girl's hair and fin like ears. The fuzzy tail draped casually over her shoulder and neck, and from the looks of it the little beast had no intention of moving until he was finished his observations.

“...or you know. He could just decide he likes your shoulder more than mine and do it himself.” The thinly veiled exasperation in Mark’s voice was a bit hard to miss but his posture was loose and relaxed despite his agitation at the misbehaving capuchin. There was no immediate danger here after all. Chittery was well trained enough to know to be gentle as it was a necessity of working with children after all. He just wasn’t supposed to leap onto other people without permission first and the surprise of it might make the poor girl a little uncomfortable.

Phoenix had already seen from how well Chittery was behaving that he probably wouldn't need to worry about the creature causing any issues. Besides, Ambrosia had already had it's share of interesting mishaps, including one caused by Shoshana herself. In any case they would be seated in a corner away from foot traffic, so if business picked up the excitement wouldn't be an issue, and it was unlikely any of the guests would see Chittery and complain. "I'm not worried about it," he said with a chuckle. "He's more than welcome here."

Completely fascinated by the monkey, Shoshana hovered closer. But she did not expect the small beast to jump at her. "Oh!" Her hands went up, not to stop him but more to reach out if he didn't quite make it. Her wide eyes met Chittery's and she stared at him as he poked and prodded at her. "Your monkey is very friendly!" She observed, cautiously reaching a hand up to run her fingers through his fur.

Phoenix let out another bark of laughter, far too amused by the sight of Chittery examining his uniquely-featured daughter. He understood the curiosity. Shoshana's kind wasn't exactly common. Chittery's reaction was just more forward than most when first seeing a Raevan.

"Mr. Monkey Man," Shoshana had already forgotten the name of their guest. "Can your small friend eat with us too? We have food, yes!" She flicked her fins towards Chittery, wiggling her nose at him and smiling.

Phoenix snapped his fingers. "Ah, yes! Everything should be coming out just now. We can discuss over food, if you're hungry. Shall we have a seat?" The man gestured towards the corner of the restaurant near a window.

The Frei’s outstretched arms weren’t needed but they certainly were a good indication that the girl didn’t mind the monkey’s impromptu decision to change perches. A relief to all involved, Mark was sure. Chittery seemed to be thrilled to explore this fascinating new friend, and more than willing to let Shoshana pet at his fur in exchange for his own curious proddings. Both parties were equally fascinated by the other and Mark was pretty sure the monkey actually smiled at her when their gazes met.

Cute. Really cute. It’s been awhile since Mark had seen the capuchin this receptive to being touched so it was kind of a little shocking. “He is! He works with a lot of kids so he needs to be a people pleaser!” Lighting up with pride, Mark laughed as the little monkey turned his attention briefly towards the equally amused Phoenix before returning to the girl. For the time being nothing but the Frei would serve to interest Chittery. At least unless…

The word food immediately caused the monkey’s attention to snap up, his little hands changing targets to search the girl's clothing for the aforementioned meal. The wiggle of the girls ears was a brief distraction, flickering the little black eyes to meet hers before a tiny hand moved to boop her nose in response.

Mark’s own stomach growled in response to the prospect of a meal. Phoenix really was a great guy. Offering food to go along with their business talk was a sure fire way to get into Mark’s good graces pretty quickly. “Food sounds great! For both of us.” He adds, confirming that Chittery is indeed allowed to eat with them if they were so inclined to offer. “You would think that they would offer us at least a slice of cake but apparently Deborah’s too busy chatting about the most recent PTA meeting to feed the guy who was entertaining the kids for the past three hours. I’m not even a picky eater.”

“As for Chittery. I have a bag of peanuts I use as snacks but he’ll be happy with just about any fruit you feed him. Loves figs though. He’ll eat ‘em right outta your hand.” A playful wink in Shoshana’s direction served as his permission. It would also offer Mark a chance to question Phoenix about his unique charge without being rude.

Chittery's exploration of Shoshana's clothes for food and the boop made her giggle softly, and she booped his nose in return before running her hand gently through his fur. What a fascinating creature! Their dog Dio was intelligent enough, but the monkey was clearly much more so, and she could actually comfortably hold him. She was strong enough to lift their pit bull, but he couldn't exactly perch on her shoulder.

Phoenix gave Mark a sympathetic look. "Well, no worries there, we'll fill you right up. Appetizers should already be ready, and you're welcome to look through the menu and order a full meal on the house." Business was always well enough that Phoenix regularly offered free meals during business meetings or to friends and family. He knew it probably wasn't the norm, but it was how he preferred to conduct business. Food made everyone happy, and it was fantastic for breaking tension if there was any. It made for more relaxing discussions.

While Phoenix began to lead the way to the booth reserved for their meeting, which he could see was already being stocked with pita bread, tzatziki, vegetables and glasses of water, Shoshana had another idea. "Fruit! We will go find fruit, yes, monkey?" Forgetting to ask if it was alright, the Frei gave Chittery a pat on the head and hurried past Phoenix and Mark straight for the kitchen.

Phoenix turned to Mark, scratching the back of his neck with a sheepish look. "Sorry about her, I hope that's alright. She tends to do things without thinking." He gestured to the set table and waited until Mark was seated before sitting across from him. "Feel free to order anything you like. It's a slow morning, so it shouldn't take long."

Back in the kitchen Shoshana was oblivious to the stares she was getting from the rest of the crew who had not expected their floating co-worker to come in with a monkey on her shoulder. Instead she was chattering away while she grabbed a plate and started to fill it with every sort of fruit they had in stock. "Do you like this, monkey?" She inquired as she lifted a slice of a strawberry to him. "We will get you lots of food, yes. We have good fruit."

The monkey’s nose twitched as Shoshana’s finger rose up to return his earlier boop, his hand briefly grabbing the digit before releasing her hand all together so that it could rise up and stroke the fur upon his back. While not what many would consider fluffy by a long shot, Chittery’s fur was still soft and pleasant to the touch, parting easily due to Mark’s and his own careful grooming. The monkey seeming to settle down to allow the girl her chance to pet him as his eyes scoured the room, landing upon Mark briefly before looking back to Shoshana with an expectant sparkle in his eyes. Food was clearly on the forefront of his mind.

With Chittery happily in the care of Shoshana, Mark turned his full attention towards Phoenix, his grin never easing even as the man cast him a sympathetic look. In fact, it only grew when the man uttered those three beautiful little words -- on the house. A free meal. It was like a dream come true! “Thank you! That’s incredibly generous, man! I appreciate it!”

This clearly wasn’t Phoenix’s first rodeo. The booth that they ended up in were already sporting some rather nice pre-meal items, the smell of which had Mark salivating. Greek food was new to him, but if the smell of the fresh pita bread and unique appearance of the dipping sauce was something to go on he could pretty confidently say he would be enjoying it. Carefully sliding his guitar into the spot next to the wall, he took his seat just as Shoshana floated past them with Chittery still sitting upon her shoulder. Briefly, concern floated across his expression, his eyes meeting the retreating monkey’s as a silent conversation flashed between the two.

‘Don’t you dare make a mess or I’ll throttle you.’

From the looks of it, Chittery got the message and would be reluctantly keeping his hands off whatever lie inside the kitchen that wasn’t handed to him. With that taken care of, Mark waved Phoenix’s concerns off with another friendly smile and a gesture of his hand. “Hey, it’s fine. She looks like she has things covered so just let her roll with it.” Picking up the offered menu, Mark’s gaze skimmed over the list of food items as he chewed on his lip. “We’ve never seen a kid like her before. Would it be rude if I asked… yeah no, probably is.” Cutting himself off before he finished that line of thought, the younger of the two men was quick to admit his error. As curious as he was, Shoshana was still a person and asking what her race was and treating her like some kind of circus act just because she was a bit different was wrong.

She was a kid. It didn’t matter what type of kid. She was just a kid. Of course, if Phoenix decided to grace him with a bit more information while they discussed things Mark would happily drink it in, but that was neither here nor there. Redirecting his gaze to the menu, he thoughtfully continued to chew upon his lip as he browsed the selections of foods. Some things were familiar. The term gyro wasn’t exactly uncommon and neither was salad. However, when in Greece…

“Uh, how about this? Pas-... past-EE-chio? Is that how you say it?” Turning the menu to the listing for pastichio and pointing so that Phoenix could see what he was trying to say, Mark offered Phoenix an apologetic smile for any mispronunciation he might have made.

Meanwhile, within the kitchen, Chittery was having the time of his little monkey life. The kitchen was filled with all sorts of sights and sounds completely new to the Capuchin. Every second his eyes turned to look upon something new, his little body shuffling from shoulder to shoulder, hand grasping Shoshana’s hair and tail wrapped in a snug lock around her neck to keep himself balanced. People stared back at him, equally as astonished by the sight of him as he was of them, before the scent of fruit hit his nose and drew his gaze down to the pile that Shoshana had made for him.

Strawberry! Strawberry! A tiny hand darted out, plucking the bright red fruit from the girl's fingers in order to bring it to his mouth. Eagerly he bit into it, chewing large chunks of it in an unspoken response to her question. Yes. Yes he did like this. He liked this very much! He wanted more too, but Mark had given him an ‘order’ and the monkey knew better than to jump down and attempt to pluck the fruits from the plate Shoshana was preparing for him. So instead he leaned down, watching her, licking his lips as he waited for her to offer him more.

Phoenix was relieved at least that Mark didn't seem to mind Shoshana taking off with his little buddy. He knew the Frei would be gentle with the creature, and she just wanted to help. He helped himself to a piece of pita, ripping off a piece and dipping it in the sauce with a hum of approval. Damn did they ever serve good food, if he said so himself.

The cut off question caused the man to quirk an eyebrow. He already respected the guy for stopping himself before saying something he thought might be rude, but now Phoenix was curious. "It's alright my man, what were you going to say?" He pressed, giving him an encouraging smile. "Shoshana's not exactly the most common of sorts. Ask whatever you like. She'll probably ask you just as much." He laughed.

Gesturing a passing server over, he briefly interrupted the conversation. "Pastichio for our guest, please." He turned back to Mark. "Coffee? Soda?" The server jotted down the meal order with a nod.

In the kitchen Shoshana had succeeded in making quite a large platter of fruit for the monkey, while continuing to give him bits of strawberry while she did so. "You are a very well behaved monkey!" She praised him, turning around and smiling at the gawking chefs while she picked up the plate and carefully began the journey back to the dining area.

When she reached the table she sat the plate down gently, then looked over at Mark. "Mr. Monkey Man, you have a napkin in your hair!" She pointed out. "Is it supposed to be there?" She wondered if it was some sort of fashion she was not aware of, placing paper products in one's hair. She settled down in the booth next to Phoenix, plucking up a strawberry for herself and placing it on the small appetizer plate in front of her. Still smiling she placed a finger on the piece of fruit, which slowly began to drain of color and crumble until all that remained was a small, dry pile of something akin to sand.

Following Phoenix’s example, the musician exchanged the menu he had been holding up to pick a piece of the pita bread that had been set out onto the table and ripped a small sample of it off the corner. The bread itself was light and fluffy, lacking the hard crust of the loaves offered in dinners and Italian restaurants, and while he didn’t dare shove his nose in the stuff the dipping sauce smelled faintly of yogurt and herbs. Maybe a hint of lemon? It looked like Phoenix was enjoying it so without a hint of hesitation he dipped the bread into the sauce and took his first taste of Greek cuisine.

The taste was to be expected based on the smell. Yogurty and refreshing, a little on the zesty side and very, very creamy. Letting out a pleased noise of his own, Mark tore off another, larger piece of the pita on his plate before returning for more. His stomach happy to have food in it after several hours of work. “This is great! Why have I never tried this before?” Chuckling, the younger man plopped another piece of tzatziki covered pita into his mouth.

Swallowing down his most recent bite, brown eyes looked up from his plate to meet the quirked brow and curious gaze of the restaurant owner. There was something a bit strange about hearing the words ‘my man’ come out of Phoenix’s mouth, perhaps, in part due to Mark’s own considerably more casual usage of the term. It brought a smile to his lips and eased the earlier tension in his shoulders brought on by the slip up in his manners.

“Really? Alright then.” Sitting back a little bit, his fingers moved to scratch thoughtfully at his chin as he considered his words. “I’m just a bit curious about what she is, is all. I work with a lot of kids. Some magical, some not, and Shoshana still stands out in terms of appearance and just how blatantly full of magic she is. Even Chittery was in awe at her to the point he went against his training to leap on her shoulder. That’s kind of a big deal.” Mark’s expression was a mixture of curiosity and consideration, clearly struggling between his desire for more answers and the necessity of being polite in the presence of a newly met potential business partner.

The expression did alleviate, however, upon Phoenix’s comment about Shoshana’s own curiosity. “Heh!” Barking out a laugh, the smile from before returned full force. “She’s more than welcome to ask whatever she wants! I may not have every answer but I’ll share any I do! I love it when kids ask things. It means their curious about the world and want to learn!”

A server passed by and Phoenix signaled him over to place Mark’s order. “Water is fine. An extra lemon wedge would would be nice though.” Offering the server a polite smile, he waited until they departed before turning back to Phoenix. “Seriously though? I’m used to questions and kids being kids. Shoshana doesn’t seem like the type who means any harm so don’t sweat the small stuff.”

Speaking of the Frei, it was hard to miss her approaching form as she floated in back from the kitchen with Chittery happily chewing a segment of strawberry on her shoulder. The sight of the plate, packed to the brim with fruits, brought a hearty laugh from Mark’s throat. There was no way that Chittery was going to be able to eat all that! Especially when Shoshana had very clearly been handing him bits throughout the time she had been in the kitchen. “Think you got enough?” He joked when she reached the table.

Chittery followed the plate, crawling down Shoshana’s arm as he finally relieved her shoulders of his weight just as she drew attention to the napkin currently lodged within Mark’s hair. “Napkin?” Blinking in confusion, it took him a moment to realize what she was referring to before the memory dawned on him and brought forth an embarrassed chuckle. ”Oh! That! Chittery put it there. It has the address and name of the restaurant on it, so when I when I got here I let him have it. He didn’t want it so he shoved it in my hair. Guess I forgot about it.” Reaching up, he plucked the piece of paper from his hair, opening it up to reveal the hastily scrawled address and name.

He fell silent for a moment as the took her seat beside her father, just alternating his gaze between the Capuchin currently gouging himself on a fig and the girl. Her intentions with the strawberry drew his attention, her lack of stomach making him wonder how eating might work before his mouth slid open in surprise as the Frei drained the fruit into nothing more than a sandy clump. From his spot on the table Chittery immediately jumped up in shock, climbing over to poke his tiny fingers into the pile of sandy strawberry remains. His tiny eyes were wide and kept looking back and forth between her and the strawberry, and, as much as he tried not to, Mark couldn’t help but do the same.

Phoenix was less than surprised at the question. There had been more people than he could count who had come into the restaurant and asked questions about Shoshana, some more prying than others. But he never minded. She certainly was an oddity, even in Gaia, and while he knew the number of Raevans was increasing they were still quite rare in comparison to the other species in Gaia.

His response was interrupted by Shoshana and Chittery returning, and he waited until they'd settled in. His explanation was further delayed by the display his magical daughter put on with her unique way of eating, and he sat by amused while he watched the expressions on Mark and Chittery's faces.

"She's a Raevan," he said finally, looking at Shoshana proudly. "Sort of a mixture of science and magic. I don't understand everything that went into her creation, that all is far beyond my level of comprehension. But she's made up of the soul of another creature, and a magical essence. As you can see," he gestured to the remains on her plate, "she's part sand." he laughed.

"I am a hippocampus, too!" Shoshana chimed in as she grabbed a piece of bread and did the same to it. She couldn't taste any of it, so it didn't matter much what she took as far as that was concerned. It was the nutrients that were important, so she tried to "eat" a variety of foods. Lucky for her Ambrosia was filled with healthy things for her to consume, so she got everything she needed. Especially, as always, lots of water.

"Your monkey is very well behaved, yes." Shoshana turned to Phoenix. "Can we get a monkey?"

Phoenix barked with laughter. "I don't think Dio would like that too much," he said, still laughing. Of course she'd be fascinated by a monkey. Everything fascinated her, really, but she'd had little interaction with exotic animals, and Chittery was quite an interesting individual for her.
