The day had been spent relatively well. They had done the normal thing of just hanging around, some small talk about the island damages had come up. Not much else though, maybe because neither of them really wanted to talk about this place? Cain supposed that made sense, because as far as he knew Nellie disliked the island as much as he did. Sitting on Nellie's bed a page in his book was turned, eyes scanning information about a certain art technique he had been curious about. Not that Cain was learning much since every other word was missed in favor of his mind thinking about something else. Or rather, thinking about the message he had sent to Nellie and the fact that she had yet to question what the important thing he wanted to talk about was. Maybe she didn't care? Had forgotten? It was late...maybe she was just tired? Hands shut the book and gently placed it in lap, resting over the cover. For a moment Cain was silent, then a hand moved up to scratch against some blonde stubble in the form of a beard. "....Nellie..about what I wanted to talk about earlier?" Cain spoke softly, looking towards the woman in the room with him, feeling that nervous itch already starting to well up inside. Was this the wrong move, what if she kicked him out of the room? ******** class="quote"> baby_gwing

It was unfortunate really that Cain's room was wrecked to the point that the Life hunter needed to temporarily bunk with someone. Nellie wasn't the kind of person to turn away a friend in need though she was surprised initially that Cain chose to come to her instead of approaching someone else. Especially after that 'dream' in which the both of them were led to believe that they were horsemen of the Death clan and lovers. Which in retrospect was a cruel joke to the Mist trainee for it gave her a glimpse of what things might be like if she loved someone and had those feeling reciprocated.
Perhaps Cain didn't remember any of that at all. That had to be it because it wouldn't make sense for him to ask her to share her room with him if things became awkward between them as a result of something like that.
The day was spent helping Cain settle in, first salvaging what they could from the wreckage in his room and then shifting things around in Nellie's so that he could have a space to call his own. While Cain was sitting on the bed with his book to wind down for the day, Nellie had sat at her desk with her journal opened to the last written entry and a pen in her hand to jot down what she could remember of the 'dream' and her thoughts on it until Cain spoke.
"... yes?" She had wondered what it was that Cain wanted to talk to her about in his earlier message but thought it best to let him decide when would be an appropriate time to bring it up again. Putting the pen down and shutting the journal, she turned to smile kindly at him and waited.

This was harder than Cain had given it credit for, once he was faced with Nellie words became lost. Difficult to piece together in actual sentences, which left the man reeling in his head. Blinking out at Nellie Cain could feel the heat of frustration and embarrassment race across cheeks. Why couldn't he speak?
This was Nellie, they had spent time together, they had went - they had been lovers in some sort of messed up life already so. Cain swallowed a hard lump in throat and then attempted to clear it. God he was pathetic! His face was a heat wave now as fingertips caressed the cover of the book in lap.
Terrible thoughts already plaguing him, Cain, well he had never been on a date. Not an actual one, not even back when he was normal. But after his last run in with Zeke, the fight, the break down...Cain knew it was important to have more of a social life. The man knew it would be good for him to get out, to not isolate himself on the island anymore.
To be with someone that gave happiness so readily like Nellie, someone who tolerated Cain for more than a few moments without provoking him. Someone who had nearly all accounts of spending time with her were warm and just, just felt right. He had already come to terms with knowing he liked it, knowing he wanted to know more her...and the only way to do that was.
A very impatient witch in Cain's head was clearly tired of listening to all his inner thoughts. Cain bristled, got a look of determination and coached himself for a moment to smoothly ask Nellie for a date.
"Iwouldliketodateyou, ifyouwantwecandothatyouknow?" All his previous advise to himself was obviously forgotten as he rambled out a long line of jumbled, fast words. Cain's glasses slipped as his head went down with a puff of air, clearly disappointed. Bright red he muttered, "...I just...I think I like you..and that..we might be able to..you know?.." Hell he didn't even know what he was trying to say at this point, how would she!? "That is..if you wanted to try and go out with me..I'd like that." Better.

The silence that hung in the air and the flush that quickly spread like wildfire across Cain's cheeks was a first for him and had Nellie wondering what it was that the Life hunter wanted to speak with her about. When he finally blurted out his intent, first in a long chain of words that even she had difficulty making out much lest comprehend though that was thankfully soon followed by the properly enunciated phrases that got what he wanted to say across to her, it was then her turn to feel the heat rising to her cheeks as she pondered over how best she ought to respond to him. < Niffy... >
< Yes pup? >
< Did Cain just say... >
< Yes he did. >
< ... but why... >
< Does it matter? Cain has always been an honest and direct young man. You are not against this arrangement either yes? >
Deciding to default to Niflheim the fire warg who was her partner in the end, Nellie found herself heartened by the fact that he wasn't against her and Cain taking their friendship to the next level. If she was reading things right short of asking Niffy directly, it seemed like the fire warg was encouraging her to go for it.
But there was still one more thing that she wanted to make sure before she gave Cain her answer. Something that was especially important given what the both of them had just been through. "... this doesn't have anything to do with that dream. Does it?"

At the question Cain stilled, this wasn't exactly the reason. But he wouldn't lie, "not entirely but....it did help my decision to finally ask you." He would be lying if he said it had nothing to do with the dream. For what it had been, the dream had been nice, it had showed him a side that Cain was willing to explore.
A life he had considered but never pushed for. That being life with another person that he wasn't a total a*****e to. Someone who could stand him for large amounts of time and someone he could in return.
Nellie was that someone, hell, just about his only someone.
"Does that bother you..?" He asked with a look over the woman, a little bit of anxiousness seeping into facial features as he waited for a reply.

It was hard to miss the slight shift in Cain's facial expression when Nellie had been staring at it for the past couple of minutes ever since the Life trainee initiated the conversation that the both of them were having now. Was he... worried? This was admittedly a side of Cain that Nellie had never seen before. The Cain she knew was always so sure of himself and his stance on various things, angry over what seemed to her like a great many things - some of which were apparent to her, others not quite.
She likes him as a friend at least. While he was always angry, direct and harsh at times, not once did he ever take his anger out on her. On the contrary in fact, he had been rather accommodating and surprisingly supportive in spite of the quirk that was apparent in her speech and had most of the others keeping their distance from her. Although she wasn't sure yet if she could really live up to the expectations of that special someone in his life, she wasn't against giving things a shot so long as he was sure that this was what he wanted and not because of the lingering aftereffects of the strange dream that the both of them had just gone through.
"... it doesn't bother Nellie. Not entirely..." The Mist started with a shake of her head, getting up from the chair so that she could head over to sit with Cain on the edge of the bed. "Nellie... I... don't want you to do this because you feel like you have to. Because you feel responsible for Nellie because of what we were together in the dream..." She wasn't sure if he could even comprehend what she was trying to get across to him. But she was trying her best even if she only just started to realize belatedly with a mix of dread and horror that this could go very bad and jeopardize everything that the both of them already shared.

Responsible? Cain could grasp what it was Nellie was saying, even though the woman was speaking in confusing circles. He did get her hesitation, understood where this was coming form but as usual he laid it out flat for her. "That's not why I want this. I get that in that place we..had a relationship. But that's not why I want one in reality. " Cain paused and turned to face her as she sat on the bed.
A moment of silence to gather thoughts and he spoke again, this time almost shyly reaching for Nellie's hand. " I like you, I've always liked you more than the other people I've meet here or anywhere really." He shrugged his shoulders and continued, "after going to that place, the dream, I realized I was wasting my time not asking you...not seeing if maybe you liked me enough for us to try." Oh god this was pathetic and strange. His nose curled in frustration, "Jesus ******** know. It's honestly just a yes or a no. So would you like to try and date me or not, if not that's fine as well I guess..." There. That was the end of it, right?
