Virtus had just enough time that morning to complete a hunt than be at the training grounds before General Kyle would count him tarty. It was their leave time, their time to regenerate before training, and Virtus took ever second of that time to do just that.

The horizon was already blurry with the rising heat that promised to only get hotter throughout the day. A red light slowly begun to sweep across the rocks and dirt, casting long pointed shadows like teeth in a beast's maw. A wind blew southward. Virtus tried to keep himself downwind so the prey did not catch on to his approach... borks were not smart, but they spooked easily.

He cast a golden eye on a lone bork, away from the rest of the group. A big mistake! ... Once again the wind shifted and Virtus had to creep along the rocks to keep his scent hidden. If only nature would cooperate! He had to eat before training. Weaver forbid if he were late to that! Being second under the general only meant that his punishment would be far more severe. He was to set an example! Another shift. GAH! Virtus ducked his head between his shoulders and crouched low. The prey was already starting to squak and shift nervously... but he was too far to strike...

User ImageHe was certain he had heard something over this way. Akun crept low to the ground, resisting the urge to look back toward the treeline where his charge was hidden. She was a good little one, smart enough to follow his orders when it counted. Even if she'd looked at him with the saddest eyes he'd ever seen when he gave them - one part wide and scared, two parts absolutely furious. Stay down, no matter what. Here's hoping she was.

The russet tah moved closer to the flock of borks, eyeing them warily. Spooking the group wouldn't help him suss out this prickling feeling at the base of his tail; he found their squawking hard enough to manage already! That meant trying to make himself look small as possible, and that was a feat all its own. Still, there were plenty of stones about for cover. By coming at the baffled birds at an angle, and working to keep his paws soft all the way, Akun considered himself lucky not to have alerted them yet.

Looks like he was not alone in his efforts, though. Ears perked, the big male temporarily forgot himself at the sight of another tah in the rocks: the cause, no doubt, of his pervasive paranoid feeling. How long had it been since he had seen another B'alam that looked like him, besides his little one? Entirely too long, to be sure. Watching the other tah - seeing the strength there - took away any doubts Akun might have harbored about telling her to stay hidden.

Sorry for the delay! Should definitely be quicker going forward.

It was in his moment of failure that Virtus suddenly realized he was not alone. The presence of another tah became obvious. Whatever focus he had on the borks was now gone and shifted to the anomaly. In this time of war, one could never be too careful. The meat could wait, but if a phoenix had decided to land in dragon territory the dragon had to prepare for fire.

His eyes narrowed while he looked away from the now fleeing herd. The wind had given them his scent and they did not wish to linger.

Virtus ignored them and begun to survey the area as best he could from his crouched position. Should he be bold and make himself known? The thought had crossed his mind. Than again, what if it were someone who could overpower him? Virtus was confident in his abilities, but he was not stupid.

The bork were on the move, and he had the other tah in his sights. Those were all the reasons Akun had to be stealthy taken care of. He stood, shaking out his mane as he did: the flaming red locks were unusual among his own, far as he remembered. Having them at their bushiest would no doubt assist his appearance on its way to proper imposing. Not that the wayward Fire was a small creature, by any means. But at this very moment, he was not quite so sure of himself as he looked - nevermind that he had a little one to protect. Every advantage would count in his favor.

Particularly as it was too late to turn back, now. If the other couldn't see him approaching at this point, he was blind in more ways than one. Just in case, though, Akun cleared his throat before speaking. "Poor fortune in your hunt, brother?" He felt the slight growl in the question, sending his voice even deeper than its bass-low rumble, was appropriate. He was perfectly willing to be friendly, if this other tah was amenable. And if not, well. He would cross that unfortunate, burning bridge if they came to it.
