Shaid Nahtama'tu was waiting patiently for his friends to return. Well… friends might have been a loose term for the fluff heads that he usually traveled with. He was somewhat fond of them, of course. Pinzin was pretty decent, and shared his inability to communicate easily. They had developed a rather simple way of conversion with expressions along. Oddly enough, it seemed to work out pretty well for them. Better than the fluff heads’ way of interpreting them. Unfortunately, Shaid couldn’t speak for Pinzin, and Pinzin, likewise, couldn’t speak for Shaid. So they were both dependent on the fluff heads… whose primary goals seemed to be hitting on mares and getting into trouble. Trouble which Shaid was often the one to drag them out of. But that was part of the reason he was fond of them. Not that they were constantly getting into trouble, but that they looked past the reason he was able to get them out of it. Shaid had always been intimidating. Being as black as a moonless midnight, with thick armor and large horns, Shaid presented as a force to be reckoned with. Add on top of that his unwillingness to speak most of the time… Well, there weren’t a lot of soqs that were willing to mess with him. There also weren’t a lot willing to risk a friendship. So, the fluff heads were trouble, but they were also friends… sort of.

Fialová Můra was working her way through the foliage, trying to keep her delicate wings close to her body. Despite being small, she was not built for tight spaces. Her elegant wings more than made up for her diminutive stature. At least, that was what she believed, and what she would insist on if anyone tried to give her any slack about her size. Her wings were large enough, for example, to lift her off the ground. She could fly away from any danger, rather than having to run. Granted, she couldn’t fly for very long, but she didn’t need to. She just needed to get far enough, fast enough to avoid whatever might want to eat her. In other words, she just had to outfly any poor twit that was stupid enough to get between her and danger. A hero, she was not. In fact, she had a very finely tuned sense of self preservation. Normally she avoided tight spaces like this, because it restricted her best defense. But for once she had to duck into the foliage to avoid a sticky situation. All she had to do now was find her way out. Unfortunately, it was dark. So dark that she literally ran into a tree without even seeing it. At least, she thought it was a tree.

Shaid felt something bump into him and gave a small grunt as a warning to whatever creature hadn’t noticed him. This wasn’t the first time someone didn’t see him in the dark.

Fialová heard the grunt and froze, wondering if something had found her after all. Until she realized it had come from the thing she had run into. She peered into the darkness until she could barely make out a shape. “Oh… sorry,” she said, hoping she wasn’t talking to herself.

Shaid studied the small, lavender mini before him. From the way she was peering around, he could tell she didn’t quite see him yet. That was good. Maybe he could slip away before the sight sunk in and she started shaking in fear. That was what usually happened. And until he met the fluff heads, it had been what ALWAYS happened. But Chrysoar had seen him and rather than reacting in fear, he had stuck to Shaid side like a burr. Or a leech. Shaid still wasn’t certain which, some days. Perhaps this little mini would be different as well. She certainly didn’t look like anything he had ever seen. For one, her wings were almost bigger than she was. Most minis that he had met in the past had had small, almost ornamental wings. Usually they had been by the ears or tail, too, though not always. So she was clearly an unusual little thing. Maybe that would extend in other ways. He gave a small grunt to acknowledge her apology and to let her know that she really wasn’t alone.

Fia frowned a bit as she heard another grunt. She hadn’t run into anything this time, so she was fairly certain it hadn’t been her fault. Maybe the other creature was accepting her apology? Or maybe that was a ‘watch where you’re going, ant’ grunt. It was hard to tell without knowing the source, and since she couldn’t even see the source, it was even harder. She considered backing up and trying to find a different path, preferably one with more room and light and fewer grunting soqs. But that would still take her back to what she had been trying to avoid in the first place. For all she knew, something could be waiting for her outside the bushes. The best way was through, she decided. Unfortunately, there was a large, nearly invisible barrier in her way. “Um, not to be rude, but I’m having a little trouble seeing you,” she said, keeping her tone apologetic. “It’s kinda dark here, and all. And I need to get by. Is there a way around, or…?” she let the question trail off in case the other soq had another solution that she hadn’t thought of.

Shaid tilted his head, curiously. Not that the little one could see it, but that didn’t matter. She still couldn’t see him, really. He stepped aside so that she could get out of the tunnel of foliage she had somehow found. At his moment, a small beam of light hit the ground where he had been. It still wasn’t terribly bright, but it was bright enough for her to see if she gave her eyes a chance to adjust.

As if out of nowhere, a beam of light showed her the way. She breathed a sigh of relief as she wiggled her way out of the bushes. Once again, she was careful of her wings until she was certain there was enough room to stretch them out. “Oh, that’s much better,” she murmured, feeling the aching muscles relax a bit. “Thank you for that!”

Shaid watched her stretch out those unusually large wings. He immediately reassessed his opinion of her. This wasn’t a mini mare after all. She must be a flutter who chose to shrink down to the size of a mini. That would explain the lovely wings she was displaying. He just hoped she didn’t opt for a larger size once she fully processed who she was sharing the space with. There was more room in the little clearing he stood in, but if she got any bigger it would begin to feel rather cramped. While he wouldn’t mind, he guessed that she would. Then again, if she was going to change her size again, wouldn’t it be smarter to go smaller and zip back through the bushes? Which begged the question… Why hadn’t she done that in the first place? She had looked rather uncomfortable with the sticks of that bush poking into her. And with the way she had stretched her wings, he guessed that they were starting to cramp in the odd path she had chosen. Perhaps she couldn’t grow smaller. She might not be a full flutter. He wished he could ask, but the utter rudeness of the question and his own inability to form a coherent sentence kept him standing there in silence.

Fia gave her wings a couple of gentle flutters to make sure nothing had caught and torn in those bushes. “I’ll tell you,” she chirped, “that’s the last time I go into the bushes to get away from… well, anything. For a moment there I thought I was going to be stuck forever. Never mind what might have happened if one of my wings had torn. Could you imagine not being able to fly?” she sighed heavily, then cringed as she realized what she had said. Stupid Fia! She chided herself. Check to make sure the person you’re talking to has wings before you go on about the woes of being earth bound! She knew from experienced that the flight handicapped could be sensitive about their disability. She peered at her current companion finally, trying to see if she had put her hoof in it or if she had lucked out. At first she still couldn’t see anyone. Then her eyes adjusted enough for her to realize that one of the shadows was darker than the others around her. A black soquili, then. And a full sized one at that…. And were those wings? Yes, she did believe they were. Well, there was that at least… Though they looked rather leathery… Like a kalona, maybe? Oh dear…

Shaid saw the exact moment that the small mare realized that he was large, dark, and intimidating seeming. He recognized the misgivings on her face, and with a soft sigh, he slowly lowered himself to the ground. Perhaps if he made it clear he wasn’t going to attack she would calm down.

Fia tensed and prepared to make a dash for it when the stranger moved. Before she could give in to her flight impulse, she realized he was settling down onto the ground. “Oh… uh… you’re not going to try to eat me, are you?” she asked, a touch nervously. A stupid question, but it didn’t hurt to ask.
PostPosted: Mon Oct 30, 2017 8:14 am

Shaid stared at the tiny mare, started both by the question and by the bluntness. He shook his head to reassure her that no, he wasn’t going to eat her. He wasn’t sure what good that reassurance would do. After all, if he actually did intend her harm, he would have done so already. Unless, he supposed, he was supposed to be sadistic. Could she think he was a kalona? He couldn’t be mistaken for a skinwalker, he knew, so kalona was the only other race that he could be confused for. Those creatures could be nasty. They also occasionally liked to play with their prey. If that was the case, he could be lying to her. He heaved an internal sigh, realizing that it was probably just as well that he didn’t dare risk speaking to her. He would probably create her doubts for her, with his babbling. If he could even get out a full sentence within the hour, at least. Some days it paid to be more or less mute. Perhaps this was one of those days. The little mare didn’t seem to be running away just yet.

“Oh, good,” Fia said, relieved by his response. It occurred to her, distantly, that he could have been lying to her, but anyone could be lying. Deception was one of those things everyone learned, eventually. She chose to believe that he was being honest with her. If he wanted to hurt her, he could have done so already. Heck, he didn’t have to move into the light so she could see him. Someone as big and intimidating looking as he was couldn’t possibly not know how scary he looked. If he had wanted to put her at ease to deceive her, he could have stayed in the shadows…. Then again, she would have wanted to know why he was hidden in the shadows… Maybe he realized that? Nah. She dismissed those suspicious thoughts and reminded herself that she had chosen to believe in him. Today she was going to rely on the better nature of strangers. Tomorrow she might be cynical and suspicious. She liked to mix it up sometimes. Yesterday had been another trusting day. Of course, she hadn’t run into anyone who tested that trusting nature, so it was only right that the trusting day extended to today.

Well, the little mare seemed to have decided to trust him. Shaid wasn’t certain how he felt about that. On the one hoof, he was relieved that she wasn’t running away from him in fear. It was a rare case that someone was willing to give him a chance. On the other hoof, she wasn’t running away from him in fear. What if she was too trusting? That could get her hurt if she ran into the wrong soq.

When the stallion didn’t say anything else, she started to fidget a bit. “You don’t talk much, do you?” she asked, though as soon as the words were out of her mouth she realized how silly they were. Of course he wouldn’t reply to her if he wasn’t much of a talker. And if he did, then it would be completely counter to her question.

Shaid shook his head slightly. Though he could see the small mare kicking herself for asking the question, he didn’t mind. Those few who didn’t take off immediately upon seeing him usually commented on his lack of conversational skills. He could have tried to explain why he didn’t like speaking, but it would have only made the situation worse. The mare seemed very sweet, if a bit too trusting. He would have liked to ask her more about what she was doing there and why she wasn’t running in terror. He would like to know for sure that she wasn’t the sort to just trust a complete stranger. He’d like to believe that she simply had a good judge of character. But his experience with Lori and Chrys taught him that those who seemed to take to him also had very little sense of self preservation. He wasn’t certain he could take another trusting soul under his wings. Though, she was tiny… there might be room for her….

“That’s cool,” Fia chirped. “I mean, I can’t seem to shut up most days, so I can’t imagine being quiet all the time. But it’s kind of neat that you can make yourself understood so easily without saying a word. Like I said, I’m always talking. Like now. I’m kind of a nervous chatter. And I don’t really like silence much. I guess you don’t mind it, but it kind of weirds me out for some reason. I guess it just seems all awkward, like both people are waiting for the other to say something and then it just stretches and then it gets even more awkward. But you don’t have that problem, do you? You just let the other person talk. That’s not a bad idea. I should try that sometime…” Fia stopped to think about that for a few seconds then shook her head. “Then again, I don’t think I could do that. Do you think I could do that?”

Shaid blinked at the tiny mare, startled by the stream of words. Though he probably shouldn’t have been surprised. His fluff headed friends could yammer on just as much if not more than the little mare was doing now. But was he really supposed to answer that question? And if he was, how was he supposed to answer? It was obviously one of those questions that had a right answer and a wrong answer. His honest impulse was to guess that she wouldn’t be able to handle a quiet moment, but he doubted that was the appropriate answer.

Fia went on after a two second pause, not really needing a response. Especially since she knew that he wasn’t the type to talk much anyway. It was a rhetorical question anyway. “Yeah, I couldn’t do it. I can’t even seem to keep quiet right now, and you don’t seem to mind. The quiet that is, not the fact that I’m babbling like a loon. I bet you would like me to shut up. Were you here because you wanted some quiet?” She hoped not. If he had been, then she definitely destroyed that peaceful moment for him.
PostPosted: Sun Dec 31, 2017 7:17 pm

Shaid waited a moment to see if that was another rhetorical question. When she didn’t immediately launch into another rant, he shook his head a bit. He hoped that was enough to reassure her that he wasn’t bothered by her chatter. He was actually fairly used to it all from Chrys and Lori. Though it was true he had found the little alcove for a bit of quiet solitude, that was more because he had wanted a very brief break from his friends than because he actually wanted the quiet. He didn’t mind her company. At least, not at the moment. If he ended up adopting her into his group of charges, he might need the occasional break from her energy. But he was certain that she could find suitable company with Lori and Chrys. Though he wasn’t certain he should inflict her upon Pinzin… Now, that stallion liked his solitude. He had simply been dragged along in the wake of Chrys and Lori’s enthusiasm.

“Oh good,” Fia sighed. “For a second there, I thought I was annoying you. Well, I guess I could still be annoying you, but at least I’m not interrupting your quiet. Well, I mean, I know I’m interrupting your quiet, but rather that it wasn’t something that would bother you…. Yeah, that sounds about right. Anyway, if you weren’t looking for quiet, why are you here all by yourself? I mean, this seems like a pretty good hiding place. It’s off the beaten path and even I had a rough time getting here. I can only imagine how hard it was for you to duck away here, being so much bigger and all. Not that that’s a bad thing. Being bigger, that is. You’re not fat… I don’t think. I can’t really tell. No offense. You just sort of blend into the darkness really well, you know? It’s a little hard to see too many details… I should really shut up now, shouldn’t I?”

If he had met this little mare a year ago, he might have had trouble following that chatter. Experience with his own easily distracted friends had prepared him for this conversation, though. He knew, for example, that she was worried that she had offended him. He shrugged a bit and tried to offer a small smile to reassure her that he didn’t mind. He even understood what she was trying to say. She was a mini and he was a full sized. That made him bigger by very definition. And he knew that it was hard to see him unless he was in direct sunlight.

He shrugged. Did that mean that he didn’t mind her babbling or was he just trying to be nice? With the light as dim as it was, she couldn’t really read his expression. For all she knew, he had been scowling at her this entire time. Maybe even gibing her the evil eye. Should she just take off now and cut her loses? There was no real reason for her to stick around longer than necessary. Well, other than the uncertainty of whether or not the creature chasing her was actually gone. She was fairly certain it was.

Shaid hesitated when the small mare suddenly fell quiet. While he enjoyed quiet, he found that her silence was a bit unnerving. At least, after all the chatter, he had to wonder if something was wrong. Had his smile scared or upset her? He’s never sure how to express himself. Sometimes his smiles were just as scary as a scowl to others. He had meant to reassure her, but what if he had just convinced her that she was wrong to be talking to him like this. He really didn’t mind it. He was learning more about her with each word she said. Ultimately he’d have to decide if he was going to adopt her or trust that she could take care of herself. How could he make that decision if she suddenly decided to stop talking to him? Well, the decision would be taken out of his hooves if she suddenly decided he was too scary to be around. He really hoped he hadn’t accidently scared her.

The stallion wasn’t doing anything else or giving any other indication that he was annoyed with her, so Fia decided that the shrug wasn’t dismissive. He probably was just saying that he didn’t care one way or the other. So if he didn’t seem to mind, and the quiet was starting to get to her again, she bounced a bit. “Normally this is where I’d ask you a bunch of questions to learn more about you,” she told him, resuming her chattering as if she had never stopped. Surely he’d stop her if he was tired of listening to her. “But since you don’t like talking, that doesn’t work so well, huh? Oh! I know… Would you be willing to do a huge favor for me? I know we just met and all, and it’s perfectly understandable if you don’t want to. I mean, who would want to do a favor for a total stranger? Especially one that’s so annoying as I am.”

A favor? She wanted to ask him a favor? That had to mean she wasn’t afraid of him. But it could also mean that she wasn’t as naive as he had originally thought. Just because she was small and sweet seeming didn’t mean she couldn’t possibly be devious. He tilted his head questioningly, waiting to hear what the favor was before he committed to anything. He didn’t mind helping out a stranger in need, but he also didn’t much care for being taken advantage of. That was yet another reason he avoided speaking when possible. Many creatures thought a stutter indicated a lack of intelligence and a level of gullibility.

She saw his head tilt and took that as an encouragement. “You see, I was actually crawling through those bushes for a reason. Something was chasing me. I’m pretty sure it was a kalona or something. Anyway, I ducked into the bushes because it was bigger than me and I knew it couldn’t follow. I almost thought you were whatever it was when I first saw you. That’s why I was so startled. But I don’t know if it’s gone or if I should stay hidden for a bit. You’re a lot bigger, and you look pretty tough… think you could take a peek around and see if the coast is clear?”
