Eloise was always looking to the future. At least that’s what she was always telling herself. Look to the future. Be the you that you want to be, the you that you want others to see. It seemed like a good mantra, and she had come up with it all on her own, so that had to count for something at the very least.
Today her focus was, for once, not on improving her voice. Today it was all about her looks. Ever since she had practiced her singing in front of that other really pretty freshling, she had begun to doubt her rather trademark hairstyle…the poof might be cute and easy to maintain…but it kind of gave her the appearance of someone who didn’t care much what they looked like, and that was not how a star was supposed to act. Or look. Or think!
Today, the little elf was making it her mission to find someone who had amazing hair…and see what made them do it. What made them choose that style. Where did style even come from?
These were life’s hard questions, and it was all up to her to ask them…and all up to her to get them answered.
Her eyes darted around the hallway, and finally landed on the very soft looking wavy teal tresses of…of…a chomp? Was it a chomp? She had heard of them, but hadn’t had much of a chance to see one, and this was going to be fine! And she had such pretty hair.
Eloise rushed over, extending a hand, rather pompously. “Hi! I’m Eloise. Your hair is very, very pretty…what made you choose that style? How do you manage to keep it so long and not get annoyed by it? I think I need a new style, but I just don’t know what to do!” These were very, very real problems for an up and coming star.

Caela was going about her business when a very pink Elf girl sped up to her. It took a moment for her to process the barrage of questions, and the processing didn't go as quickly as she would have liked. "I, um... huh. I never really thought about it." Her detached claws combed through the edges of her hair. "I put my hair back like this because it's what my mom always does, and I think that's fine. I think that's why it can be so long; it's behind me, so it doesn't bug me." A thoughtful noise escaped her as she mulled the questions over some more. "My hair's always been like this, kinda straight with curls at the end. If it's a new style you're looking for, maybe we could look together? I guess I should think about these things too."

Eloise’s whole face lit up and she nodded. “I would really love that.” She moved closer, reaching up and detangling her hair from the band of elastic that held it in place. It wasn’t…her hair wasn’t very long, only going down to about her shoulders, but it was very bouncy. Thick and bouncy and…
And after a few moments, she remembered why she didn’t like it down. It was way, way too hot. “Ugh. I thought maybe I would want something with my hair down…but I hate having it on the back of my neck! It gets so sweaty and gross.” Her eyes fell on the detached claws and she sighed. “Maybe I should start bringing a brush with me…that might have helped in my quest for a new style…my hair’s to thick to comb it with my little fingers.”
Maybe she should have just kept her mouth shut! How had she expected to get a new hairstyle so easily, it wasn’t like people just…did hair on a whim. Well. Maybe they did. But not often.

"It does?" Caela had a feeling that was a stupid question to ask. "My hair never gets sweaty on the back of my neck, unless I'm out somewhere hot." Or maybe it did and she just never noticed. In any case, this poor elf girl was very plagued by the condition of her hair. "I think you could keep the high ponytail you have. It'd look nice, and it wouldn't be on your neck. And if you needed to be somewhere important, you could make it a bun. But I guess you want something different, so... do you know where the magazines are?" Caela looked away and scratched her head as she thought it over. "Maybe they're in the library. I'm sure the magazines might have some fashion tips for you."

“Oh!” Eloise’s eyes widened at the very thought of fashion magazines. Why hadn’t she thought of that/ It made so much sense…far better sense than chasing after every person in the Academy who had nice hair and asking for advice…but would the library really have something like that? Maybe not the library in the Academy…but perhaps another library would…though…she wasn’t quite sure how she would take herself from the Academy to another, outside library…she would need someone to go with her, that was for sure.
“Well…That is a very, very good idea…but what if our library doesn’t have fashion magazines…I’m not sure what I should do if that ends up being the case…maybe I should just go in and get my hair done…and be surprised…? I mean, it could end badly…but it’s hair…so it’ll grow back, right?”
The elf gave a sheepish grin, thinking this plan through. If she went somewhere nice to get her hair styled…whoever did it would know what to do…that would be their job. She wouldn’t dislike it. At least she hoped she wouldn’t.

Caela made a thoughtful noise. "If the library doesn't have magazines, maybe one of the older people here might have one. There's got to be a stand or something somewhere... but I like the idea of just asking someone who does hair, too." She was quite sure that there had to be a magazine around here somewhere, but then again, who knew if people would be willing to give such things to Freshlings? There might be scantily-clad people in those magazines that Freshlings shouldn't see. (Kind of silly, she thought.) It was probably best to go to a professional. "Yeah, I mean, if doing hair is that person's job, they should have ideas for you. I wonder if there's any way we can look up reviews, and get someone to take us somewhere if we find a good place."

Eloise nodded thoughtfully. “Maybe we could go to the library and look something up on one of the computers, that might work too.” She pulled at one of the puffs on the top of her head and sighed. “Maybe when I get it all done, and get my look changed up a bit, we could hang out again? I mean, I don’t know.” She twirled the puff again and sighed. “Do you wanna come with me to the library, and maybe even you could come with me to get my hair done? I’ve never done it before and I really don’t have anyone else I can ask to go with me…so…maybe?”
It was kind of strange, asking for something like this. But, now that Eloise thought about it…she really didn’t have many friends. But…this Chomp seemed like the perfect person to really fill that need in her life.
“We can make a day of it…if we can get permission, that is…but I think we should, it’s important to look our best, after all!”

"Of course!" Caela swiftly felt very involved in Eloise's quest for style. Though she had never put much thought into the idea herself, she wanted to see Eloise enjoy getting a new look. That was something the Elf seemed to value highly, and there would be a certain satisfaction in seeing the other girl reach her goal. "I'd love to see what your new look is like. Maybe I'll get a touch up, too. This isn't something I've ever really thought about myself, so... maybe I should start?" Caela extended her claw to Eloise as a gesture of friendship. "Should we start looking now? Maybe then we'll be able to get it done soon!"

It was a moment before Eloise reached out for the floating claws, a little unsure of just how she was supposed to hold them…
Finally the elf settled on wrapping her hand around the biggest of the claws and grinning. “All right! This is going to be fun, we’ll both end up getting to look our best, and then we’ll be able to get jobs and we’ll live our dreams, right?”
Because anything could happen with a good haircut…looking good could affect your whole outlook on things…though so could making new friends and going on adventures to work on looking good…but maybe that was too much thinking about things, honestly.
She gave a gentle tug, trying to pull Caela out of the room they were in and towards the library. They had a lot of work to do.

Right, Chomp handshakes were always kind of an odd thing. Caela felt a bit silly that she'd forgotten that. In any case, while she approved of Eloise's go-get-'em attitude, she thought she was getting a little far ahead. "Yes, but... jobs? I dunno if we need jobs yet. Let's do the 'looking our best' part first." She took the cue from the tug, wincing a bit as her claw pulled forward. "Ah-ah-ah, don't pull my claw like that. It might come off. I mean, it'll grow back, but I'd rather not deal with that. Anyway..." The uncertainty in her expression faded, replaced by a genuine smile. "Let's go! We've got a lot to do, things to look up and older people to make take us with them."
