General Painite knew that this area was not one she was welcome in. The Royal Knight Camelot had made it very clear: come near the library, and he would personally kick her out. She had not been around this area for some time, but a flare of chaos in the back of her mind told her there was something here worth investigating.

The knight himself did not seem to be around at the moment, likely off on a patrol or doing some other knightly thing that Painite hated and cared very little about otherwise.

There was a lingering aura, though, that she recognized.

She had not run into Merlinite for some time. She had wanted him to be her protege, and he had so much promise until he betrayed her. That whole affair had been heartbreaking, though she had long ago thrown away any feelings of hurt and missing him and replaced those holes with anger and a dire need for revenge. He betrayed her, and that was all she needed to know.

Motioning for Cavansite to follow her, she hopped down from the rooftop next to the library and into the alley beside it. Merlinite was just climbing out of his hiding spot when he felt the auras, but it was too late for him to make a run for it. He stared, wide eyed, as Painite landed in front of him.

Cavansite landed right behind Painite, grinning and summoning her own spear into her hand. She hadn’t yet had the pleasure to meet this Merlinite, but she had heard of him, and was quite excited to see what she could do to Painite’s old protégé. How dare someone think they could be important to her Painite. No, that was something that was her job.

“Greetings, Merlinte, right? What a pleasure. I’ve heard oh so much about you.” Her eyes raked his half youma form, wishing that there had been something shiny on his outfit that she could add to her own…but she didn’t quite thing that the large wing protruding from his back would affix itself neatly to her trinket belt…but still.

It might be fun to separate it from his back regardless. And that would make her Painite so happy, she was sure.

“You’ve been caught in quite a pickle now, haven’t you little dragon.” Her tone was light, but very mocking, and she glanced to Painite, waiting for the go-ahead to begin the attack. How fun. Taking down a traitor.

Merlinite swished his tail behind him, eying the two Generals and frowning, his fangs still visible. He flexed his wing, gripping his clawed hands into fists and tensing himself for the inevitable battle. Where was Camelot now? Would he sense the trouble, and come back in time to keep Merlinite from being destroyed?

Or worse, he imagined, if he knew Painite as well as he thought he did. If she got the chance, she would finish what she started and completely corrupt him. He would become the thing he worked so hard to escape, and feared so very much. She would make him a youma.

And her slave.

Painite looked at Cavansite, smiling warmly. The look was terrifying to Merlinite, who had gotten glances of affection from her when he was her Lieutenant, doing her bidding. This look was more, though, than he had ever seen. And somehow, knowing she was capable of forming that kind of bond with someone, was even more terrifying..

"Show me what you can do, my fellow General," Painite purred eagerly, holding her need for revenge at bay for now. She was one to play with her food, so to speak, and before they drained him or took his starseed, or corrupted him into a more obedient pet, she wanted to have some fun. More than that, she wanted to see her partner having fun.

Merlinite snarled, bracing himself. Damn it, Camelot.

No, he had to fight his own battles. The Royal Knight already did so much for him: he couldn't just rely on the man to show up when things were tough. To become a knight was Merlinite's dream: that meant he had to be brave, and he had to fight his demons. Literal and figurative.

Cavansite felt a shiver go through her at the caress in Painite’s voice and she moved her spear into a much more attack friendly position. “So, my Painite, you’re going to allow me to have all of the fun? I’m honored.”

She turned her attention back to the malformed mistake in front of her and smirked. “You’re going to pay for everything now, little dragon. You’re going to pay for it all, and then you’re going to make up for everything as well. I’ll make sure of it.”

She advanced, moving swiftly for the mutated man, and teleporting at the last moment to appear behind him, twisting her spear around to knock at his clawed leg, hoping to knock it out from under him. “Have to be quick when fighting us, pumpkin. Or you could just be a good boy and give up without a fight and accept your punishment. I’m sure it would save you at least a little pain…not that you’ll remember the pain when we’re done with you.”

Her voice had gone almost silky, with still a fierce edge of mocking in it. This was so utterly fun.

Painite looked at her one time minion, now equal. She smiled warmly, almost lovingly, if such a look could reach a monster's face. Merlinite felt his stomach turn, as he knew that look all too well and had seen it turned toward himself a couple of times. It felt like an eternity now, and they were all so very different.

These two were worse, if anything. They were the real monsters, of the three present. He might be the one with the claws and fangs, but they were the ones without any hearts or souls.

"You're messing with the wrong dragon," he countered, snarling and readying his claws. He saw her move, his youma skills coming into use only when he was fighting or training with others. They made him keen, like an animal, and more aware of his surroundings than he had ever been as a Negaverse soldier.

Spreading his wing wide to keep himself balanced as she swept his leg out from him, he dropped to all fours. He was used to his form by now, and knew how to fight like both an animal and a human. Really, the animal skills were a lot more useful.

"Punishment? You're one to talk, letting that wretch control you like a puppet. She'll dump you just as quickly as she dumped me, you know. The second you get a thought in your head that doesn't match hers, you'll be like me, or worse."

He charged at her, leaping from his four legged crouch and slashing at her with his dragon like claws. He could not hold back here, as he did with training or even when trying to simply escape from negaverse soldiers. This wasn't just escaping, this was surviving. He had to fight the same way they would: to kill.

Cavansite laughed lightly, shaking her head. “She doesn’t control me. She hasn’t ever controlled me, I’ve chosen my path, and when she wasn’t around, I grew and became what I am without anyone telling me what to do. She isn’t a puppetmaster to me, she is an old friend who I have welcomed home graciously. She is a person that I respect and would do anything for,”

The General leapt backwards, swinging her spear around to counter the oncoming claws.

“But she does not control me. Nobody controls me. I am who I am going to be, because of what I want to be.” She didn’t like that thought though. The small bubble of doubt that the words managed to bring to the surface.

She knew that Painite wasn’t…quite herself, she had known that since the woman had shown back up at her house but…Cavansite had hoped that she could help her in whatever ways she needed…but she supposed that there might be a very real chance that Painite could turn on her…and while she knew she could hold her own…the thought wasn’t a comforting on in the slightest.

This creature had been one of Painite’s minions before…and now he was a full blown traitor. Idly she wondered if Painite would ever turn on her. Or if revenge were more important…if this dumbass dragon managed to get a claw in her…would the other general try to help…or keep fighting.

Her eyes flashed from Merlinite to Painite and back again, the barest trace of confusion and slight worry in them.

Painite watched the two coolly, interested in watching her past and her future fight one another. She had no doubt who would win, and believed fully in the power of the woman she'd chosen to love, rather than to control. She nodded along with Cavansite's words, smiling.

Merlinite snarled, disgusted.

"You don't know what you want. With Chaos and Painite's words in your head, any individual thought you might have had is gone forever. You're just a toy, for both of them, and that's all you're going to be as long as you're on this path. I learned that the hard way."

Being half a youma was definitely a hard lesson to have suffered through, but with the help of his White Moon friends he was able to find a purpose for himself. More than he ever had in the Negaverse. He saw the doubt on Cavansite's face, and used the moment she looked toward Painite to his advantage. He charged, stabbing his claws forward as if trying to grip her shoulder, except his hand was all knives.

"You know I'm right. If it comes down to you, me, and Painite, she's going to pick herself. If you fail, if you look weak, if you make the wrong choice, she'll make you pay for it. Or she'll leave you destroyed in her wake."

Painite, for her part, heard the conversation clearly, but stood without any kind of response clear in her expression. She left Cavansite to make her own mind up about where they stood.

Cavansite hadn’t noticed the claws coming down until it was too late and they sliced into her shoulder. Letting out a cry of surprise she tried to wrench herself away, kicking out wildly. “Get the hell off of me.” Again his words dredged up a small bit of doubt that she didn’t want to have. She wondered if Painite would come and help, of if she really would just…leave her.

There was no reason for speculation. “Painite. Help me with him, won’t you? Let’s do this together. This traitor needs to learn some manners.” If her friend…her mentor…her lover didn’t want to help…she would figure something else out. Teleport away, perhaps. Get out of sight and cut a deal with the traitor…or maybe he would get the sense to teleport…he could still do that, right?

Maybe.

But…ideally…Painite would help.

She looked back over towards the other General, the trust in her heart battling fiercely with the doubts that had been planted. “Come on, love. Please.”

Painite watched them, growling lowly as Merlinite spat his poison and seemed to infect Cavansite with doubt. It made her weak, which showed in the way he was able to injure her while she was distracted. More than that, she seemed to believe him and that hurt what Painite called her feelings.

But she was different. She was not the person, pathetic and vulnerable, that Merlinite once knew. She was not the person, either, that he thought she had become. The difference between them was she was a monster that liked the fact, and was not trying to pretend she was something better. She understood herself, her feelings, and her goals.

Even if no one else in the world did.

Painite teleported. She vanished from sight, leaving Cavansite alone with Merlinte. He snarled, dragging his claws from her shoulder violently while he pulled back.

"I told you! Don't you see how pointless this is? You're going to die here for no reason, and I don't want to kill you! She doesn't love you, she doesn't know how. You're just a-"

His words were cut off as a spear burst through his gut, the familiar, vicious point with its feathers and runes glowing dully. Painite stood behind him, pulling her spear back so it was half poking out of him and turning it. He screamed in pain, sinking to his knees.

Painite stood behind him, but her eyes were on Cavansite. She didn't say anything, thinking her point had been made.

There was one small moment of doubt. One moment where it felt as though her stomach was falling down to the floor, and her heart with it, but when Merlinite began talking…when he seemed to take…pity on her, the doubt flared up into anger. “Of course she loves me you half brained dragon, you were just too weak…” And then the spear was suddenly poking out from inside of Merlinite and Cavaniste’s gaze snapped to Painite, every bit of the doubt erased.

“Hello darling.” Her voice was a purr and she watched the dragon fall to his knees, raising her own spear and jamming it fiercely into the wing, dragging the sharp blade down until the wing was torn right in half. She laughed then, moving towards Painite and drawing the other woman into her arms, planting a fiery kiss on her lips, arms pulling her as close as possible.

When she finally took a breath, she glanced at the bleeding dragon, laughing once again. “You’re wrong about everything. And now you’re going to die because of it.” Her words were soft, nearly a caress, and she moved, turning her back to the half youma and nibbling on Painite’s ear. “I love you.”

Merlinite let out a horrible screech, more youma than human, as his wing was torn apart. He grabbed Cavansite's spear with one clawed hand, the tip of Painite's with the other, but there was very little he could do at this point. He felt fear coursing through him as strong as the pain from his wounds, knowing he was facing his death.

He did not want them to kill him. To get their revenge. To prove him wrong. To ruin every good thing he tried to do. His redemption. His purification. It was all wasted.

Painite kissed Cavansite lovingly, holding on to her with a tight, possessive grip. She was angry, but it was all directed at Merlinite at the moment. Maybe she would think back later and wonder how Cavansite could ever doubt her, but for now she was contented. She smiled, letting go of her spear so she could wrap both of her arms around the woman she loved so very deeply. The woman that changed her, for better and for worse, and the woman that kept her fighting when she had nothing else.

"I love you, too."

Darkness was crawling over Merlinite, chaos bearing down on his starseed as his fear flooded through him. He was crippled, bent over and bleeding, while his two enemies cuddled and basked in their victory over him. He was ready to give up all hope, until he felt a burst of light fill his mind.

The Royal Knight had been running. He was out of breath, which was impressive considering just how much stamina the fourth stage had. He'd come from across the city, at the outer reaches of his senses, when he realized what the three Chaotic auras could mean. He knew Merlinite's, knew where they were, and understood immediately that his ward was in terrible danger. He did not pause when he arrived, summoning his shield and tackling the hugging duo full force. He smashed his shield forward, bashing them with the full brunt of his anger and worry.

"Terra Viridis Crystal Power!" He yelled, furious, and green light burst from the eyes of the dragon shield, engulfing both Painite and Cavansite and forcing terrible pain to tear through them. It would leave no injuries or lasting damage, but it was torturous while the light lasted, and combined with the power of his hit itself, the two were sent flying.

If he hadn't broken bones with the attack, he would be very surprised.

"How dare you," Camelot said, through gritted teeth, eyes blazing, "hurt him. I've let you," he was talking to Painite, though now he knew she had a partner in crime that was just as dangerous as she was, "terrorize the people I care about long enough. This ends. Tonight."

Cavansite cried out in surprise and again in pain as suddenly they were thrown, and there was an awful green light that made her feel as though her skin was being burned off and every bone broken and smashed to dust.

For a moment she couldn’t think. Couldn’t breathe. There was a dull ache in her wrist and she heard the words from whoever or whatever had decided to attack them as though they were coming from far away. Distant words that didn’t make much sense in her ringing ears. Her arms groped for Painite once again, and when she felt the other woman in them, she looked up, giving a very defiant look at the Royal Knight and traitor. Fine. He could have him. She was sure that the dragon wouldn’t survive this night…and the thought made her feel quite ******** you.” Were the words that managed to get choked out, before she used the last bit of her energy to teleport herself and Painite as far away as she could, giving a groan when they made it, tugging the other General close. “Are you alive…?” She figured that she was…but it was always good to at least make sure.

“We’re safe.”

Painite opened her eyes and found herself not where she had been a few moments ago. She must have lost consciousness for a moment in the attack, and was not quite sure where they had ended up. He must have hit them really hard, to send them sprawling this far. She had taken a lot of the shield hit, instinctively curling her body to protect Cavansite as much as she could.

Her shoulder was shattered, broken in more places than she could probably count. Her arm was broken as well, with a few ribs following suit. She groaned, taking a very slow breath, careful of her body. A few starseeds should do the trick...

She hoped.

"I'm alive. You teleported us?" she asked, pain slowing her words. She moved to put her good arm around Cavansite, though, pulling her close. She'd never experienced quite that much pain all at once, and knew that they were lucky to have gotten out of there alive. It seemed her old rival had no intention of playing nice any more, and was not holding himself above killing them. Fine, it would just make their encounters that much more dangerous and fun.

"Well, I think that was a good night... I'll count it as a win."

Even if they very seriously lost a second ago, they were still together. Their bond was stronger than ever. And they probably killed that traitor. So, really, they came out on top.
