Ever was always durable -- not the way stone is but the way a reed is, swaying under a heavy breeze only to spring back once the storm had passed. Very little got under his skin and lingered there, and thus far nothing had broken him.

The island was no different. It wasn't easy, not by any stretch of the imagination, but many things that would get under other peoples' skin didn't bother Ever. He could eat coconut and fish every day; he could sleep in the sand, or in a cave, could wear the same clothes and the same boots. It was repetitive, but he'd had worse. He wasn't starving. He wasn't freezing. He wasn't naked.

Time did wear away at him. Not having his work, the boredom of going through the same motions, meant that he had to search for other things to do. Things to work on. He was left only with himself, and the people who had been stranded with him.

If nothing else, over the course of a year, he was going to swim, clawing his way out of the choking fear of sliding beneath the surface of the water...

Quote:
This is a drabble style orp where anyone is welcome to come in and interact with Ever at any point during the year they're trapped on the island. Everyone is welcome to pop in and start something up, no need to ask before hand!

Sam was one of the hunters who thrived on a consistent schedule. The repetition of the days, the knowledge that everything would be the exact same when she woke up...On the one hand, her inquisitive self was insanely bored once she had found out there was nothing particularly noteworthy about the island aside from its Groundhog Day effect; but often, that itch didn't manifest itself beyond insomniac episodes every once in a while, if only to be forced to explore at night for a change. On the other, she was soothed by the rhythmic schedule. High tide and low tide were always the same. The fish were the same. The palm trees always had coconuts. The sand was wiped clear.

Today, the itch was too much, and it was too early to sleep. In her ragged clothes, stitched together with palm fronds in an attempt at modesty, Sam bartered for one of the fish a hunter had caught. She had hated seafood before Deus and still would if she survived the ordeal, but survival had a way of forcing even the pickiest of eaters to open wide. But not today--no, today, she was going to catch herself a bird with this bait.

So she threw the thing into the open sand, settled behind one of the trees, and began to wait patiently.

"You're going to have to learn, now more than ever." Zeke was standing knee deep in the softly crashing surf. The tide was out, the the beach stretched on and on, and the coast was surrounded by a wealth of warm shallows. Not exactly conducive to swimming, but good for getting used to the water enough for a proper lesson to be had.

He was staring back at the beach with his hand on his hip, pale eyes on Ever as he waited for him to come out and join him.

It was a solid plan -- well. No. It was an acceptable plan, it was a decent plan. The problem was that the island was very small, and Sam wasn't alone on it. More than that, she had no particular way to keep wandering feet away from her careful little trap.

There was a bird considering her offering. Its movements were hesitating, choppy; it hopped in closer and then a bit away again, shooting uncertain looks around the area. It was just a bit too open, the sky turning above, risking assault from every direction --

And, when Ever stepped out of the woods with a graceless kind of thud, it immediately took flight, leaving Sam with an empty trap.

sink or swim

"I know how to swim." It was very even, with his arms crossed over his chest and his own eyes raking over the water in a distasteful kind of way. It was obvious that Ever was trying to smooth out his expression, and hide the low shiver of fear at just how big the ocean around them was, seeming to go on forever.

"I swam all the time when I was a kid." And the implication, from that, was 'but not so much since'.

He didn't look convinced. "So what's the hold up?"

In truth he wasn't being nearly as cavalier about the whole thing as he might have sounded. He knew Ever wasn't fond of the water, and he was justifiably worried about him should something similarly catastrophic happen again. If Zeke hadn't been there, hadn't recognized what was coming when he had and made sure to get a good hold on the Life hunter...

Well, it was better to take steps against the same thing happening again. He couldn't control the weather, but this, at least, they could do something about.

"What's the rush?" It was shot back easily, his chin lifted like it didn't matter but his shoulders tensed in a way that showed it very much did. Ever shook his head at Zeke, focused on the other man instead of on the water, coat still clutched loosely in both of his arms. He could hardly be pulled in while he was fully clothed, was perhaps the logic.

"Are you planning on trying to swim back?" And now, finally, his eyes raked the horizon. There was no sign of Deus, and if they couldn't see it, it was unlikely they could make it back on their own steam.

His thinking was simple: fruit fermented. When it fermented, you got alcohol, something that they could all use on this island, and desperately. It'd take the edge off of their truth game, and the sting out of being stuck with the same people day in and day out. It'd blur the days and make life simpler in a way that, perhaps, they needed right now. Something normal, and fun, and ridiculous.

The problem was that coconuts didn't seem to ferment in that way. Instead, as they aged they rotted; the smell was rancid, sticky and fatty and disgusting, and Ever at least didn't know enough about how alcohol was actually made.

But he had a year to figure it out.

The smell was horrible and Melvin wondered if one of the seagulls that constantly flew overhead finally died somewhere. Following the smell wasn't hard and walking in the direction of the stentch had him spotting someone crotched low inspecting something. Moving through the palms trees to where they were hidden, he tried not to breathe theough his nose

"So what died? Think we can bury it?" He asked as he held his breath only to see no dead body.

"...the only thing that died was my hopes of a stiff drink." Ever looked mournful, head raised from the hole he was digging -- not that he was doing a particularly good job. None of them had a shovel, only fingers that caught on the shifting sand, dirt spilling back in even as he tried to excavate something deep enough for the horrible coconut.

"You don't know anything about fermentation, do you?" It was speculative. Assessing. Melvin seemed like a good all around nerd.

He adjusted his glasses and stared at Ever. "You mean what they teach kids in middle school." He said flatly. "Yes. I know about fermentation. Are you trying to make prison wine with whatever washed up and is rotting right now?" He still had no idea what the hell that smell was, but if Ever was talking about alcohol and fermentation, it could be any number of now vile things.

"What were you using?"

"Only thing we got: coconuts." He could have been offended, but instead he grinned at Melvin's confidence. Exactly as he'd suspected: all-around nerd. A nerd without specialization. One who had a hundred pointless facts stored away in the back of his mind.

"I figured they have a lot of sugar in them, so it should work, but mostly it just rotted, right?" He pointed in that direction, to a coconut that had been dredged in sand in an attempt to kill off the worst of the smell.

"You need yeast and unless someone has some bread that didn't dissolve in their pocket, you are SOL." He knelt down to see where he was digging. "I would love to have a drink right now, but what you are making is probably a breeding ground for bugs to lay eggs."

He looked grimly over to him. "Please don't drink whatever that smell is."

Something about Melvin's grim expression just made Ever's smile grow wider -- brought back some of the pain in the a** he'd been before Deus instilled some strange sense of responsibility into him. He struggled to bring his face back into check, tried to look serious and thoughtful.

"Are you sure it's not good to drink? I mean, I've let apple juice go to alcohol before and that was just fine..." Nevermind that he had a hole in the ground, was halfway through burying his first attempt.

"The fact you have let other foods spoil and still drank it says a lot about you. Don't. It's not good for your health even with a fear shield, and we don't have any medical supplies here to pump your stomach. Not only will you not get drunk, you really don't want anyone forcing you to vomit just to save your stupid life." He said in a tone very much like a scolding mother.

"And stop drinking spoiled stuff." He added.

Ever offered a flash of teeth in reply, his chin tipped up -- because obviously Melvin was exactly the right kind of fun to needle, and it would have been even better if he'd managed to school his own expression, to look serious and thoughtful, but Ever just couldn't.

"The luxury of wealth, I guess." He shook his head, leaning back against a tree near the hole he was digging to consider Melvin's face. "What would you suggest doing to improve it before I try it? It's all well and good to just say no, but solutions are better."
