The hunger struck him after not too long, and it surprised him when he did. Since his venture out into the Sahara, Vash hadn't been terribly hungry; had viewed it as a necessary evil, especially considering the quality in the cafeteria. Now, on an island, in the sun, staring up at a too-tall tree, all he could think about were coconuts. He'd been at it about ten minutes. At first, he'd thrown rocks, stones found on the shore, from small to large -- his aim mediocre, at best, but even when he'd hit it hadn't gone particularly well. Now, his stomach growling, standing sunburned and stripped down to a tanktop with the rest of his layers tied loose and annoying around his waist. Vasily summoned his weapon to hand and, slowly, turned the gun over in his hand. Shooting the tree would probably be overkill. And maybe he'd explode the coconuts. But it would definitely be satisfying.

He had given up on the day, mostly.
Zane was content to accept the fact that they were stuck on an island and likely to never escape so what was the point? Though, truthfully, it was more that he was too lazy to try and come up with a viable solution or game plan. In fact, he was content to lay in the sand and stare up at the sky in all of his half naked glory, scarf laying across his torso as he hid in the shade of a tree.
Thump.
A rock pegged him on the head and he sat up with a start. "What the heck?" Green eyes blinked, adjusting to the bright light before he picked out another body. Oh, that explained the rock.
"What are you doing?" He asked, picking himself off the ground and dusting sand off his skin. His stomach rumbled. Great, another thing that required effort to deal with.

"What are you doing?" Vash shifted the gun in his hand as the stranger stood up -- suddenly defensive, his jaw thrust out and his chin tipped up to take advantage of all five-foot-six that he had to work with. There was something sharp behind narrowed eyes, a challenge or a threat or maybe just a bit of both. After a moment, he dragged his attention back up to the top of the tree, sighting idly down the line of his gun toward the coconut.

The moment the gun was moved, Zane's hands were up in the air. "Whoa, easy there." He hadn't expected hostility right off the bat, or the weapon to have been drawn, but it he had been paying attention it would have been the first thing he noticed.
"I was napping." He shrugged, eyeing the other dude before following his line of sight. "Dunno if shooting a coconut is a good idea." It seemed like a waste, really.

"What would you suggest, then?" Vash's voice dripped with annoyance as he squinted up at the tree, the coconut out of reach -- and, shifting the gun carefully, took aim again. This time, without even waiting for Zane's reply, he pulled the trigger to fire. If he'd hit square on, the coconut almost certainly would have fired. Instead he just winged one of the leaves, leaving it hanging a bit awkwardly down, like a drooping dog ear. Vash scowled as he lowered his weapon again. "Nothing else seems to be working, anyway."

"I dunno -- " Zane barely got the two words out before the gun was fired and his entire body tensed. It took several seconds for him to even look like he was relaxing and before he finished his train of thought.
"Maybe climb it. Less damage or..." he looked at the base of the tree like he was trying to determine if they could just knock the tree over. "We could like, take the whole tree down. Better than just a single coconut?"

After a long moment's silence -- a moment that was filled with judgement, a frown plastered across Vasily's face -- the tension faded away and, instead, his eyes dropped to focus on the base, following Zane's look. Something thoughtful came into his expression instead, Vash readying his gun again and taking idle aim along the barrel, as if he were going to shoot out the base this time, instead. He didn't. Not immediately, anyway. "...it's not a bad idea. The coconuts'll survive better, too, instead of pulping them up. What did you have in mind?"

On the middle finger of his right hand was a ring that he toyed with as he considered his options. One: he could summon Lerna and throw himself at the tree and have this dude knock it the rest of the way down ooooor two: he could bail out.
He didn't even know the dude's name and he was busy waving his gun around like some cowboy.
"Weaken the base enough and I can probably knock it." Sure, it sounded like effort, but being able to eat something sounded good too.

Vash probably would have been offended by the comparison to a cowboy -- especially since the way he fired was more brusque, abrupt than that. The cold pressure of his weapon in the back of his mind pointedly guided his hands and helped him line up the shot, all in the flash of a moment. The bolt from the end of his gun struck the tree and sent it teetering a bit sideways, a solid strike that even surprised Vash a bit. So he raised his eyebrows as he looked up at Zane, expression a twinge cocky now. "Like that?"

The gauntlet took up his entire right arm and he rolled his shoulders back while watching nameless take another, admittedly good, shot at the tree.
"We're such close range, I'd be disappointed if you missed." Zane shot back, doing his best to hide the fact that he was impressed. Clearly, he just needed to show him up.
Fine.
The redhead took a few steps back and threw his weaponed arm again the tree only to have...nothing...happen.
Well that was embarrassing. "Clearly you didn't do a good enough job." He huffed.

Vash's hackles went up immediately -- torn between chewing out and storming off and, eventually, deciding on neither. Instead he scowled, took aim at the tree (a tree he had hit twice already, thank you very much), and...missed. It only deepened the scowl, while his weapon tried to reassure with a slow scrape of cold fingers at the back of his mind. It didn't help.

Zane admittedly felt better once his companion missed, it mean that he wasn't the only one who failed. In fact, it helped revive his wounded pride and this time when he threw his arm at the tree, the base cracked and down it went.
He threw his gauntlet arm into the air as a fist pump. "Booyah!"
Lerna hummed in approval before he looked at the other boy. "We did good." Yeah, that was about as close to a compliment as he was gonna give. "Uh, Zane, by the way." Awkwardly, he offered his other hand.

His initial reaction had been to scoff back -- but before the words could escape his mouth, Zane had decided to fall into something good-natured instead of just being a d**k. Something about that made Vash frown, mouth turned into a tight line as he took in the proffered hand and tried to figure out what, exactly, was the catch. Where this friendly person came from, and what it was supposed to meant. When he finally set his hand into Zane's it was light and brief. A quick shake in and out so that he could stoop to go grab a coconut instead. This one was dinged on one side, damage from where a bullet had ricocheted, and it was just slightly leaking milk. He tipped it to preserve the insides. As an afterthought, he offered, "I'm Vasily."

Immediately, Zane regretted trying to be more friendly instead of letting his asinine competitive spirit or ego get the better of him. The ever brief moment of comradery came and went as fast as he could blink and he shuffled a bit awkwardly to collect a coconut for himself.
"Weird name," he blurted without thinking, then sighed at himself. "Like cool weird. Ugh. Whatever." He was giving up.

Zane's recovery was terrible; a five or six at best, and it left Vasily frowning at him again, borderline scowl. Just slightly, his chin tipped up and he focused on the coconut instead. "Yeah, okay, Zane." Pot, kettle. He tipped the coconut back to take a long swallow. It was disgusting, but amazing. Vash had been so hungry.
