Name: Jaelyn
Age: 17
Sex: Female
Sexual Orientation: Demisexual
Craft: Beastcrafter (healer) / Feline handler
Rank: Apprentice
Location: Western Weyr
Physical Description: Jaelyn is tall, but slender, with gentle curves. She has a wide smile, short lashes, and a small nose. Her black hair is long, usually tied or braided at the side of her head, with side swept bangs. Compared to her sister, she is a little more tan, a lot skinnier, and a bit more feminine in appearance. She has large, emotive brown eyes.
Personality: A kind and gentle girl, Jaelyn is still not the most outspoken or friendly. She had a talent for medicine, but not the confidence or forcefulness needed to deal with the belligerent patients one might meet as a Healer. She's never been good at standing up for herself, finding it hard to get a word in edgewise in arguments and more likely to just say nothing at all, though more often than not, her sister would step in before then. Yet there's a kind of braveness about her too. She's dealt with injured and enraged whers without flinching, and slapped away feline claws so she can get at their wounds.

Jaelyn has always had a way with animals, calming startled runnerbeasts, or soothing frightened caprines with ease. There's a gentleness about her than soothes even some of the most wild tempered beasts. She likes to help people and has a soft heart, using her skills on humans too when needed (in particular her sister) or just listening to people's problems with a sympathetic ear. Yet there's no denying she's a bit of an oddball. She has odd hobbies, finds unusual things interesting, though she doesn't seem to care at all what others think of her, or whether or not she fits in.

Positive Trait List Softspoken, Gentle, Careful
Negative Trait List Timid, Antisocial, Oddball
History: Jaelyn was born, along with her twin, in a minor mining Hold on the outskirts of Western continent. Her mother was a dragonhealer and her father was a wherhandler in the mines. From the time she was very young, it was clear that Jaelyn didn't quite fit with the rough, militaristic feel of the Hold. The smaller and gentler of the twins, she was largely ignored by her father, who focused more on her sister. Instead, her mother took her under her wing. She was the kind of girl to play doctor to injured wherries. Who would hug and pat the head of someone who was crying, rather than tell them to toughen up.

As children, Jaelyn would stick close to her sister, but as they got older and Micah started being dragged out by their father to the mines, Jaelyn would start to follow her mother to work as well, caring for dragons from the nearby weyrhold. She started helping out young, first fetching supplies and organizing inventory, later helping to calm the animals while her mother worked and deal with minor injuries. Though her mother's focus was dragons, Jaelyn took from all the beastcrafters in the clinic, learning to care for beasts of all kinds, but in particular whers. Though the mining companions were their most common patients, they would get all kinds, from firelizards to herdbeasts, and Jaelyn thought that she had seen it all, until a feline handler stopped through their hold.

The feline had been injured by a wild one of its kind, and Jaelyn ended up being the one to nurse it back to health. She wound up spending long hours talking to its handler while she worked. When the feline had recovered, the trainer offered to take Jaelyn to see the nearby Hall, to which she readily agreed. The humans and felines were close, even if they hadn't formed a bond, and Jaelyn was fascinated by the strong bonds of trust that formed between them. Seeing how well she had worked with her own feline, the woman offered her a place there as her apprentice.

It was something she desperately wanted to do, but of course, getting her parents to agree was something else. Felines were, after all, not exactly useful for mining. In the end, Jaelyn started splitting the difference, studying feline training on alternate days, while continuing to work evenings with her mother. But the more time she spent there, the more she knew her heart was with the feline pride. She had spent several turns working closely with the animals when an unbonded female Swiftpaw ended up on her table with a injured paw. As she cooed soothing words to it while worked, as she always did, she was surprised when she heard a soft voice speaking back to her in her mind. After that, her fate was set. She continued working in the Hold's clinic, hoping she could walk the tables as a beastcraft and ultimately join the pride as a fulltime healer.

However, something happened that threw a wrench in her plans. Her sister was searched as a candidate for Western Weyr. Together since birth, she could no more stand to be apart from Micah than she could from Oriya. Getting an appointment at a Weyr was no easy task, but fortunately beasthealers were in short supply, especially those willing to make the jump to dragonhealing. So when a beasthealer at the Weyr was looking for a new apprentice, her past experience with whers and dragons was enough to sway the decision in her favor. Jaelyn was ecstatic to be reunited with her sister, even if it had only been a few months.

Although she specializes in beasthealing, Jaelyn enjoys studying other aspects of beastcrafting as well, especially in relation to her partnership with Oriya, such as sheparding herdbeast and caprines or tracking animals in the woods. Still very much an apprentice, she enjoys dabbling here and there, and sometimes thinks she would've enjoyed a life as a simple Shepard, if life had not thrown her into the front lines against threadfall.

Other: Is there a profile/template for felines we should use?
