She finally woke from a catnap one day to see the text that woke her in seconds: Blah blah blah. Promotion possible upon successful mission. Blah blah blah. Nora's excitement didn't allow her to read the rest for a while as she and her partner began an early celebration in her head.

Yes yes yes yesyesYES! It's been so long, I thought they forgot about us, Norrie!

I know, dear, I know.

In truth, however, Nora knew she had been slacking off. It might have bothered her more if she had been stuck in her trainee accommodations, but...well...she was borrowing Evan's room on the second floor. And that meant having access to all the amenities she could want: a kitchen, a personal shower, more room...What goal could she have if she already obtained most of the prize? Then again, promotion meant more access, more respect...And she did so like to be respected. A new coat wouldn't be half bad either.

Rolling and sitting up, Nora took a second look at the text to get the details. Some abandoned base in Sri Lanka...recover weapon tablets...If they wanted her to figure out what happened, it didn't say. Guess it was too much a part of Death's precious need for secrets. Ah well. She had a dangerous boost of morale after felling that massive centipede in the desert before, so she was confident she could get the job done quick.

Sri Lanka...That was by India, if she remembered correctly. That meant it was probably the monsoon season. Lots of rain, she explained when Beatrix made a confused noise. Really muggy, bugs everywhere. She could feel Beatrix making a face just as much as she could see it.

Ew. But--But! If it's raining, maybe there'll be lightning. That's a good sign for us! 'Cause I do lightning too! I dig it lots!!

I suppose you're right, when you put it that way,
the trainee agreed.

Still. Nora sighed and pocketed her phone as she went to her closet to pick out a cute but still water-proof outfit. She never would get to go somewhere nice, would she?

She set out bright and early--by Sri Lanka times, anyway. Nora should have felt sleep-deprived, but she was a morning person by nature and ready for the mission before she had put her face on. Even when greeted by a thick curtain of rain, her mood remained bright as she pulled hood up. The smell was...something else, though. Not necessarily bad, but definitely humid. She wondered if the base suffered from mold much during the monsoons. Or worse: Fear based mold.

There wasn't anyone she could ask, however. Nora found the base very empty, though it had certainly been lived in. Desks still had pages with sentences paused mid-written, food sat uneaten or rotting in the cafeteria, and most of the lights were still on. Had an emergency pulled everyone away from their duties? Nora checked the systems, but she wasn't skilled enough to pull anything out other than cursory details about shifts or data from the labs--nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

No blood, no damage, nothing...She didn't like this.

Her investigation found no real heading until dusk. Right when she was considering stopping for the night and picking it up again in the morning, she heard something move near the front of the base doors. Her first impression was that it might have been an animal, but nothing had stirred before when she got there. That, and this one had left tracks in the shape of something humanoid.

Oh yay! I like tracking, Beatrix cut in, having been nothing but bored whines all day. It nearly caused Nora to jump, and she sighed to herself before pursuing.

It was hard in the waning light, but with a flashlight in one hand and her other empty and ready to bring the hammer down if need be, she followed the tracks for a short time. Eventually Nora came across what looked like a forward camp in one of the more dense areas, and the sight set her caution levels into the red. There were five of the, she figured, or six, all dead, all bruised and bloodied. Worse, there was no evidence showing they had been fighting anything other than themselves. Nora had tried to justify it, but after seeing gunshot wounds in one and a shotgun tracing on one of the tablets, she grew grim.

Had they really turned on one another? Or had someone orchestrated it? Neither seemed very likely, but they were viable nonetheless. As she mulled it over, she caught a glint of something in the darkest of the trees.

There, reflecting in the misty rain, were two pinpricks of red. She felt almost entranced gazing into them and didn't even notice the hammer coming to her free hand until the weight caused it to tip into the dirt. For a moment, Nora felt an intense rage overcome her, and she raised her weapon--

--and then she blinked.

Norrie? Beatrix was confused as to why they were standing there. Let's pick these things up and go so we can get our fancy coat!

...Right.
