Stacey sighed as she closed up the gym that she worked at. She didn't mind the long hours, even if that meant staying after closing sometimes, but at this point she was just tired and wanted to go and crawl into bed or take a relaxing bath or something. Thank goodness her apartment wasn't too far away, otherwise she might have just slept inside of the gym. They did have some spots available for those who perhaps didn't have a home for a bit but still needed an address and a place to shower. She preferred her shower at her apartment though, at least she knew how clean it was.

Jobs always picked up in the summer and so she had been busier than usual. She wasn't sure why it did, but she could only assume it was a number of things, though the explanation she would have gone with was people wouldn't be freezing as they went to the gym at least. But that wasn't what was really bothering her.

Although she loved her job, lately she was feeling a bit bored with her life. It was almost the same old routine, and while she would have taken a break to go and travel, she didn't know where she wanted to go and any exotic spots were always harder to tour when one was a lone woman with no company in sight. She could fend for herself mostly, but nothing was fair out there in the world, which meant she most likely couldn't defend herself all of the time. And so here she was stuck, bored, and wanting something to happen in her life.

She sighed again as she slung her gym bag over her shoulder and started to walk back to her apartment. Even though it was summer, the moon was already high since she had gotten out so late, and she made sure to keep an eye out on her surroundings, just in case...

Something weird seemed to be going on in Destiny City at all times, and tonight was no exception. Remarque was doing his rounds, gathering energy where he could find it. His wraiths were fat and full at the end of an hour, but there were always more to call. He had just dismissed his last batch when he stepped out of the shadows of the building.

Originally, he simply intended to cross this passing and head over to the park to see what else he could get into tonight. But then he took one step out of the alley and realized he wasn’t alone.

She didn’t have a powered signature so she had been impossible to detect and Remarque had been careless enough not to check before walking out right in front of her.

In this outfit, of course.

He suspected there wasn’t going to be much opportunity to play this off without any awkwardness, but he wasn’t the sort to just run away.

“Evening,” he greeted instead, as if he weren’t wearing some costume better fit for Mardi Gras.

I hope this is okay! Let me know if it needs tweaks!

Stacey had been mulling over some thoughts in her head, not quite paying attention when suddenly someone was in front of her. It took a moment for it to sink it but this guy was... definitely not normal. He definitely looked like he had just been at some Mardi Gras party, even though no one should have been celebrating it by now. Perhaps he had just been at some costume party?

Either way, it raised her suspicion and she was ready to bolt at the first sign of him trying to do something that would hurt her. "Uh... evening." She replied, looking around to see if she could possibly move around this guy. However, this guy was quite imposing and taking up a quite a bit of space. It would take some maneuvering on her part if she wanted to go around. "I uh... have to get home so..."

Remarque watched the girl with a raised brow. “I’m not stopping you,” he said, gesturing to let her pass. “This isn’t a hold up or anything. I’m not going to bite.”

He paused and glanced down at his attired and sighed. “Don’t let this scare you or anything. It’s colorful, but I mean you no harm.”

Unless he felt the desire to take her into Mirrorspace and drain her, but it would have been far more efficient to just use a shard. Even then, she’d seen him, and he couldn’t risk being too obvious. He wasn’t the sort to do something that would give the Dark Mirror Court a bad name, especially after he’d worked so hard to make them appear at least tolerable to the Knights and Senshi of Destiny City. It would have been a mess if any story about him harassing a civilian had made its way out; he had a fairly identifiable uniform, so the least he could do was try to make the best of this.

“Do you want a shortcut or anything? Destiny City’s not exactly safe this late. If you keep heading in that direction, you’re bound to wind up in a little bit of trouble. Saw a group of unsavory youths, so if you’re trip is going to take you that way, it might be best to take a detour.”

The Negaverse agents down the way likely wouldn’t refrain from draining what they could from her.

Stacey was about to shout out 'go the **** away' to the man, but closed her mouth and reconsidered him. Sure it was... weird that he was dressed up in such a way, but he was, probably, allowing her to pass without a fight or asking her for something creepy. And for some reason... her gut was telling her this guy was okay. Now THAT was a first when it came to creepy people. But she had learned over time that her gut was usually a pretty good indicator of people.

Her next thought was to tell him that she was perfectly capable of defending herself, but she hadn't ever been out this late this way and the 'terrorist' attacks seemed to be increasing in the city, and she knew she could only handle so many people at a time. "I... sure. A shortcut would be great." She replied, nodding her head at him. While she was pretty good with her fists, that wouldn't help much in a knife or a gun fight, and if what this man was saying was correct, then it would be pretty dangerous for her. "Since you know where the 'detour' is, could you please lead me there?" She said, smiling a bit. It was a bit funny, following this man late at night to go in some roundabout way to her apartment. But if there was a safer way to go she wanted to know about it.

Remarque hadn’t been holding his breath, but he seemed to relax all the same.

“I will,” he promised; he turned, exposing his back to her. He made it extremely obvious that he didn’t have any intention of attacking her, and he did everything in his power to give her the upper hand, should she feel she needed it. He walked for only a moment before pausing down a shallow hallway.

“You won’t believe me, if I tell you it’s down here,” he began, and while it seemed like there might have been thin alleyways branching from the back, the only thing that was immediately obvious was a tall mirror, only mostly covered with a thin blanket. “Or, you might.” He shrugged and turned to face her. “Do you believe in the supernatural? In things beyond what the world around you can explain?”

He knew he sounded crazy; if anyone had spoken to him like that before he’d been whisked away to a rainbow bridge in space, he’d have laughed in their face and walked away. But now, he had to sell people on it on a daily basis just to get them into Mirrorspace, just to see if they were supposed to be a part of the world he was.

The mirror wasn’t so far down the alleyway that he risked losing sight of her if he walked to it; he lead the way again, pulling the blanket off of the mirror and letting it settle on a stack of boxes next to it. He placed one hand on the surface of the mirror, watching as the glass rippled around each fingertip as he applied slightly more pressure to it. He could have walked through it now and been done with it, but he didn’t. He looked at her, and waited.

“And if I told you it existed, would you be interested?”

Stacey raised an eyebrow at the other. He was giving her all of the signals that he didn't want to attack her. Of course this could just be a ploy to lower her guard as someone else came by and attacked her. She sighed. Too long she had been so guarded, unwilling to give anything a chance. Sure, running away from home had been a big one, but that felt easy compared to actually trusting others, something she hadn't been able to do in a long, long time. And even though she had only recently moved to the city, so far she hadn't made any friends, only acquaintances.

She knew she needed to take a chance and make mistakes. She couldn't be living in a safety bubble all of the time no matter how good it felt. She wouldn't make the same mistake as being friends or in a relationship with someone who was like her mother and sister, but she knew not everyone was like that. And so, she followed him before he paused for a bit. Looking around him, she saw... something. A bit of the mirror was exposed by the blanket, and she wondered what he was talking about. The first question that popped into her mind was Why the heck is there a big mirror in the middle of an alleyway? But she realized that this guy seemed to know why it was there.

She mulled on his questions a bit. Did she believe in something else out there? "Not particularly... but I'm open to the idea of it." She replied. That was how she felt really. She wasn't going to go looking for bigfoot but if someone gave her evidence of it she wasn't going to turn her back on the idea either.

She watched the man curiously as he took the blanket off of the mirror and gave out a small gasp at the rippling of the surface. Was it true? Or was it some kind of digital mirror that only reacted to being touched? Her mouth was hanging open a bit and then she closed it, really wondering if she should follow this guy. She raised an eyebrow at him. "I would be interested yes... but I'd need a bit more evidence." She replied, smirking a bit at him, trying to show that she was indeed interested.

Remarque grinned. “Well, they say seeing is believing, so let’s just get on with it.”

He reached behind him and took the girl’s hand—not too tightly that it was threatening, but just tightly enough that he wasn’t going to lose her while they were stepping through the mirror. He moved quickly, not giving her time to resist or change her mind, and stepped through the rippling mirror.

It was a strange sensation, like diving into a cool pool of water, but it was short lived; one second they were in Destiny City and the next they were in a white room with strange smoke coiling around the corners of the room. There was large set of doors just next to them, and Remarque turned to them even as he dropped her hand.

“Voila,” he said, and gestured to the room. “Welcome to Mirrorspace.”

He knew it could be a bit to take in, especially when you weren’t powered to begin with, so he gave her a moment to look around. It wasn’t like there was much she could do; Mirrorspace wouldn’t let her get too far and she couldn’t leave without him.

“But that’s not even the most interesting thing, here. Come on,” he instructed, gesturing for her to join him. He walked towards the great, open doors into the Throne Room and stopped a good few yards in front of the Black Mirror that stood in the center of the room. It was eerie, but compelling; something about it seemed to call to her. It had its mysteries, that much was obvious.

But it wanted to share them.

Stacey barely had time to react before she was dragged into the mirror by the man. She felt herself lose her breath for a bit, and had to gasp when they had finally stopped moving. She was about to yell at him, or perhaps punch him in the face, either one would have been a normal reaction for her, but her eyes were drawn to the room. It was... interesting to say the least. There wasn't much to it, and the whiteness of the room burned her eyes for a bit considering she had just been in a dark alley.

She looked around a bit more, curious as to where they were. She didn't feel like she was in danger... "Mirrorspace? It's... certainly not what one would expect." She said, almost murmuring it. After all, she was still trying to take it all in and wishing she had a pair of sunglasses. However, her eyes eventually adjusted, and in enough time to see Remarque through the open doors.

She followed him and stood next to him when he stopped, looking at the mirror. It did seem to call to her, she wanted to touch it... study it. "What is it?" She asked, wondering why this mirror was so special.

“The Black Mirror,” he answered, eyes on the mirror for a long moment before he returned his attention to her. There was only so much that he could explain to a civilian, both because of their ability to comprehend the idea of magical war and because he was unwilling to let too much information escape.

“It can see into your heart. It decides if you’re worthy.” He shrugged and flashed a small smile, as if he was trying to make it a little less serious.

“If it’s calling to you, you just go up to it. If it pulls you inside, it means it wants you. It’s safe to go in so there’s nothing to worry about. It just shows you a better part of yourself.” He paused for a moment and shrugged. “Or, if it’s not calling to you—or if you don’t want to try—I guess I can just take you home, now. But while we’re here, I mean. This is probably a once in a life time opportunity. Why not make the best of it?”

Stacey looked at him from the corner of her eye, her head still turned towards the mirror, trying to find any hint of lying or perhaps messing with her, but he seemed serious. Too serious almost. She felt her hand reach out towards it without meaning too, and she pulled it back, wondering if she should really be going through all of this.

But the feeling was too intense. She needed to touch it. After a couple of moments, she nodded her head. "Well, let's see if it's decided I'm worthy shall we?" She replied, taking a couple more steps towards the mirror and reaching her hand out once again. She was nervous, more nervous than she thought she would be. And for a moment, she believed she would be rejected. However, just as it seemed she would touch the mirror, instead the tip of her finger went inside... and suddenly, the rest of her too!

Before she could even figure out what was going on, she was already back outside of it, but she had changed. And not just her clothing. She felt... more powerful. Not powerful enough to take on anything, but more... super-hero strength at least. She looked at Remarque once again. "What... happened?" She knew something had gone on, but what exactly, she wanted to know.

Remarque didn’t look as smug as he felt, but he certainly looked satisfied. His arms were crossed over his chest and he nodded approvingly. “Seems like the Mirror liked you, well enough. Welcome to the Dark Mirror Court.”

He glanced over her shoulder at the mirror behind her and asked, “Did it say anything to you while you were in there? Whisper anything in your mind? A name, maybe? And a sphere—something that would sound random to you, maybe. Like me,” he gestured to himself. “Remarque is the name it gave me, and Puppetry is my sphere.”

He didn’t bother explaining that it merely introduced him to the name, it didn’t give it to him, but past lives and distant homeworlds were too complex to be part of the initial welcoming invitation. “It means I’ve got extra powers, based on that. It means that you’ve got extra powers, abilities. The mirror chose to awaken those abilities within you and make you part of something bigger. So,” he looked at her again. “I hope you always wanted to change the world.”

Well, he certainly seems happy. Mithra thought to herself, a brief moment wondering if she really should have done this. But, it had accepted her after all, perhaps it was her destiny? "I heard... Mithra. And mantis shrimp." She replied, laughing a bit. She thought it was a bit funny, to get mantis shrimp as a, what did he call it? Sphere? Well, she supposed she had something to do with super powerful punches of some sort. Hopefully she could use them above the water.

"So, Mithra it is then? Sounds interesting." She wasn't so sure about changing the world, but if she could with this power... then she could at least try it. "Changing the world? How so?" After all, while she had been... awakened. That didn't exactly mean she had all knowledge that she needed right away.

Remarque found himself nodding. He wasn’t exactly a professional on marine wildlife, so the first thing he imagined was a plate of shrimp and cocktail sauce. “Changing the world means, at some point in the future, there are probably going to be forces that this world is faced with, and not everyone’s going to be able to fight them. For better or worse, we’ve been trusted with the power to help shape things. And, if you care about the planet, or the people living on it, you’re going to have to fight to save it. Or,” he shrugged.

“Work with us to create a new world. A safe world. Because at this point, I’m not sure if we can fight what’s coming. But there’s a lot to take in, and that history isn’t something you should get in your first night with the Court. But I promise, I’ll give you all the answers. I’ll show you around, teach you how to use your abilities. You’re not in this alone, and you won’t ever have to be. And it’s not like it’s all serious and dark—there’s a lot of things you can do that other people won’t ever be able to experience. Mirrorspace, for example.”

He gestured around them. “How many people will get to experience slipping through a mirror and finding some magical world? And there’s more to it than just this, but you’ll have time to get to know all of it.”

If someone didn’t wind up chasing her away, too. But he was going to do everything he could to keep her invested and safe.

The Court needed everyone they could get, and if she was interested, he wanted her with them.
