"You went along with it," Her voice was scarcely above a whisper, something that was a common trait in the average Phantom. After all, it served no purpose for them to be heard and for the most part, they lived in such quiet locations that they didn't need to raise their voices. Unfortunately, this world was much louder than their own and even her companion struggled to hear her above the ambient noise.

...It was something that Metis had, albeit briefly, cast a disapproving glance towards.

"I did," he replied in a low rumble, having waited for the periodic lull in bird song that seemed to come at now predictable intervals. Suffice it to say that everything in this world was so obvious. They were an open book and Metis truly had no difficulty in reading them. Ah, but Metis had always been able to read everyone, even those who believed they were out of his sight. Not that he would correct them, it would serve no purpose, but it would always be a source of amusement to the black lion.

"But why?" She seemed confused and shook her head. Their duties were very clear and to ignore them... Well, Adrastea couldn't quite understand the secretive male's actions. To this day he still hadn't exposed her for what she had done that day, and now, he was once again playing with a fire that could very well incinerate him. Admittedly, she had noted in the years she had served under him that he had been afforded much more freedom, but that didn't necessarily mean that she understood it.

"We have our reasons," He replied and gave a gentle nod towards the approaching lions in the distance. Metis knew of them, he'd seen them before, but more importantly (and worryingly), he knew where they were from. After all, it wasn't just the Justicar who happened to have eyes and ears everywhere...

"Who...?"

"You will see."

---------

"Are we there yet?" Shui groaned and lifted a paw to give it a shake. The brothers had finally made the decision to come home. Following their encounter with the Firekin in the roguelands, it seemed like it was beneficial for them to at least come home, unwind... and maybe let their father know they might have potential visitors at some point.

"Eh, you know I'm not sure right now," Huo confessed as he came to a halt and glanced about him. When they had left the world had looked very different, with various points of interest altered depending on the season.
Now there was water where there hadn't been any, and previous landmarks seemed to have been submerged. On this occasion they were a tad turned around and there was no point in lying to his brother, Shui would pick up on it anyway.

"I don't even recognise half of this stuff," Shui muttered and set his paw down again.

"Me neither," Huo replied, then paused abruptly as he caught sight of the two strange creatures on the horizon. For want of a better word, they seemed to be walking voices, the light almost seemed to disappear when it hit them.
Huo was intrigued and his expression did nothing to hide it as he raised his paw towards the pair and turned to look at his brother. "I wonder if they might know where we are," he said and returned his gaze to the male and female.

...He was met with a piercing red gaze in reply.

It was just a touch disconcerting and he couldn't quite work out why, but they did need to get home, and they had already met plenty of weird things while they were out here already. He'd just have to file this under 'really freaking weird' later.

"Worth a shot..." Shui agreed with a small sigh and finally pushed himself back on to his paws...

It wasn't long before they had bridged the gap between themselves and the pair of almost voidal lions, even then, neither the male or female seemed to make an attempt to close it for them. If anything, they both seemed to be watching the brothers with considerable interest - if the stare hadn't been enough to weird them out before, the fact these things didn't even seem to be breathing was enough to even make Shui cast an uncertain glance towards his brother.

Yes, they had met a lot of strange things in the roguelands, some funny and others a little dangerous, but there was something different about this one. He couldn't quite put his paw on it but there was something not quite right about them. He was beginning to suspect that they were illusions at this point, a frozen mirage that they had conjured for themselves in the hopes of finding some inspiration.

...A route home.

Small favours then that when they were mere feet away the faintest shift of the female's pale eyes could be seen as though she was waiting for a cue from her male companion.

"Uh, so I'm just going to assume you're real..." Huo said at last as he let his gaze drift between the pair. "Even though you don't look real."

"We are real," Metis confirmed, Adrastea simply flattened her ears against the back of her head in an action that neither of the brothers understood. They had never been threatening to anyone and yet here she is, displaying an unexplained level of wariness.

"Oh, yay!" Shui seemed more relieved than even he had anticipated and shook his head. "Seriously you guys look weird as hell, just saying." He coughed.

Unsurprisingly Metis's expression remained unreadable while Adrastea seemed just a tad more bemused; while her ears still remained flat, she had tilted her head to the side and was regarding the brothers (particularly Shui) with curiosity.

"Our unusual appearance aside, why is it you draw near?" Metis pressed, glancing briefly towards Adrastea before returning his gaze to the young pair of lions.

"We're kinda lost and we figured we'd ask if you were familiar with the area or if you're just passing through," Huo replied and shook his head. "We left this region a while ago and none of the stuff we spotted on the way out is here, it looks like it all got swallowed up by the rain," he explained. "So we were hoping that maybe -"

"Where?" Metis interrupted the sibling who he had now realised would talk endlessly if given the opportunity.

"Honestly if you've seen the ocean and could point us in its direction that would be great," Shui offered, hazarding a smile as he did so. "Pretty sure we can find our way back from there, lay of the land isn't too different and where we're heading doesn't change all that much compared to this region," he explained. It was a reply that seemed to have been acknowledged and given Shui knew when to be quiet, had even been met by a measure of respect.

...Or at least that's what it seemed like.

Rather than Metis, it was Adrastea who raised her paw and slowly pointed in the direction of the water. Both she and Metis had been there, though no one lived there, so she doubted that was where the pair had come from unless they had left a very long time ago.

"That way," Metis instructed. "That is where we saw what you seek," He concluded and gazed at the pair expectantly.

"Oh great," Huo grinned and gave his brother a nudge. "See, was totally worth asking," he pointed out with a wink.

"Thanks, we really appreciate it," Shui said as he gave his brother a nudge back. "I hope your travels go well for you, uh...wherever you end up," he added and with that, followed after his brother who had already begun to trot in the appropriate direction.

The pair of black lions watched them go in silence, and it was only when the brothers were out of earshot that Metis afforded a rare smile and turned his gaze towards his companion again.

"The way is open," he pointed out and flicked his gaze back towards the brothers.

"I see," Adrastea replied softly.
