She stood at the top of the steps, looking down to the darkness below. This was the cove, were hunters received their weapons. This was it, the moment that would tell if she passed or failed. She really didn't want to fail. Kammy wanted to be good enough, wanted to stay here. Going back to Delta wasn't a option.
Slowly she descended. This really was like a video game. A fantasy brought to life. Or perhaps a horror story. Except she had a cheat code handy. Kammy had already gone through the 'wtf is this how do I fly this thing' phase, so she knew all about Deus Ex. Knew exactly what division she wanted to be in, and what she planned to do.
But for all her prior knowledge, it wouldn't help her now. The weapon was supposed to choose her, not the other way around. Which meant if none of them did, well she was screwed.
Her foot fell to the lowest step, allowing her to see the long corridor ahead. She saw the weapon tablets lined along the walls, silent, waiting for their chosen to walk these steps. Among them was her own. But which one of them?
Slowly she walked the long hallway, eyes scanning each and every tablet. Swords, guns, lances, Axes. A endless choice of weapon varieties. Each of them cold and silent. Kammy kept walking, her nerves slowly increasing. The Deus intranet mentioned nothing about how this worked. Was she supposed to sense something? Do a magical incantation? Maybe she should have brought some dice with her for a perception check...
Her thoughts started to wonder into horrid ideas. What if she couldn't find it? What if there wasn't a weapon here for her, and she was a fluke? Humans couldn't stay here long or they would get...poisoned or something. Or end up dead. Yeah that would happen. Or she'd be stuck in delta base with too much mud and rain
She stood next to some tablets, peering at the symbols. Was she supposed to decipher a puzzle, or spell out a word? Kammy had long decided death would be her division, since it involved information and, most likely, computers, so she would be playing to her strengths. But this wasn't helping. All she knew was she had to walk around and something would happen.
Something else occurred to her. The tablets themselves were supposed to be creatures of halloween turned into weapons. A ludicrous concept that made more questions then it solved them. She couldn't find anything more than a brief description. Probably involved sensitive information. It made her feel just a tad uncomfortable. Would her weapon be pissed? Or better yet, what kind of creature would it be?
If she was stuck with a zombie she was gonna rage quit.
A few more steps, and...Crap, she could see the end of the hallway. She must be defective. Either that or she was doing it wrong.
She stood back. "Okay. Not the time for panic." She had to think.
Focus...Focus...
Oh yeah she heard something "Hello?" Excitement jumped into her chest, the girl spinning around to find the source. It was so faint, barely a whisper in her mind, but she knew she heard it. Her eyes raked the tablets, trying to gauge which one it was...
Then she saw it. It was hidden away in a corner of the room. One tablet held a soft glow to it, the light so dim it was easy to miss. But as she stepped closer the light glowed a little brighter. Yes that was the one who called to her!
She reached for the tablet, her fingers clasping the stone with reverence. As she traced the picture on the front, the stone dissolved into her hands. She felt a subtle click, in her head, a presence filling her mind.
< Hajimemashite > A Male voice spoke to her in a foreign language, then switching over to a more familiar one. < I am Kazue >
Kammy was speechless, filled with awe at the item held in her hands, intricate runes glowing and creating a brilliant affect in the gloom. She could feel her weapons emotions too. Relief at finding a suitable partner after so long. His own excitement.
"I'm Jenna Kamryn....Aww....yea. so cool to meet ya Kaze, aw yeah~" Her voice rose, then she recalled her previous concern. Was he a -
< No need for concern > She saw a image in her mind; ice blue eyes, a long busHy grey tail tinged in black. Large ears -
"Oh, oh, you're a dog? cat? fox, no no, Kitsune!"
< Hai >
" That is so, so awesome. This is, like, so cool. So so cool. Special weapon acquired, yeah! " And thus she skipped out humming a video game victory tune.
