A month had passed. 90% of that month had been rain filled and dreary. Kammy was adjusting to her new duties. Kept busy with building the base to support the many new hunters. It helped to ease her nerves, but she still struggled to communicate with others. She missed the university, the boring work she did, the familiar people she knew. Having her own personal space to hide away was a long lost luxury. Now she shared room with strangers. Not unfriendly, but people she didn't know.

In her time spent in Delta she had come to understand how things worked. The runic base was not the main one. No, that was located somewhere else, where the 'special' hunters lived. The ones who held weapons more powerful then the runics, magical beings that talked and granted you super human powers.

It was a strange class system, and she regularly heard the rumors, the certain distrust one developed when they were in the presence of someone obviously greater then themselves. Runic hunters were 2nd class. They were just normal humans. Weaker, easily killed. It left most with a bitter taste in their mouth, herself included. But she couldn't resist the gossip, eating porridge in the morning and listening to others who passed on stranger and stranger rumors. How the leaders on the island were crazy and killed you if you looked at them funny, or the massive beasts that attacked the place on a regular basis. Or how they would all fall asleep for days on end, then wake up with even stranger stories to tell.

It was hard to know if any of it was true. The hunters only turned up to drop off supplies. You couldn't tell if they were a bonded unless they summoned their weapon.

There were also talks of runic hunters becoming bonded. Joining the 'special ones'. It was a risky game however. You were taken away and put to sleep, and no one really knew what happened afterward. At least no one Kammy talked to.

She had heard of a few familiar names becoming bonded. Cecil, Charlie, Caroline. Off to the main island. It left her lonely, and more than a little curious.

Should she take the plunge? Gamble her life away?

She needed to know more.

------

It was her one day away from the base, and with the meager funds earned from her first paycheck she bought a laptop. Windows based, cheap, but it would do. Runics were allowed basic access to the Deus network, but for that you needed a computer.
She returned to her cabin, her first real smile in ages across her face. How long had been since she owned a laptop? She hid under the covers of her bed and got to work.

She had it set up in no time, then it was the usual login process. Logging into the intranet ( "Shitty wifi is shitty...ugh don't tell me I need a cable for this" ), then reading the materials. Things began to make sense. Hunter divisions, who lead them, what they specialized in. What they were fighting against, what FEAR was.

"This is like some epic DnD campaign." Kammy mumbled, reading up about portal usage. Woah, they really were thinking with portals. It gave truth to some of the rumors too, about the weapon bonding and the special powers ("+5 for extra healing buff. I like" ) but there was a word of warning. Contracts were signed, it was dangerous work and there would be no going back. Stuff about horsemen and...Amityville? Lots of bad 'you will be KOed by 1337 evil spirits' stuff.

"Wonder if I can score some secret loot..." She clicked around a few things. Access denied. "damn." More clicked, more whining from the computer. "Double damn". She wanted to test their security. See if she could bypass security and find out more.

She thought about it for five seconds then decided not to. She could be caught, and it was best not to anger the highly leveled boss guys. Plus she wasn't a expert pro at this thing.

Hours where spent scouring what she could. Then she was on the regular internet, pulling a Bella swan. Except she knew how to use google. A hour was spent searching the web for signs of Deus Ex, but nothing solid popped up.

"These guys are pros. Nice." She glanced at her laptop computer. 3am, of course. She'd have to be up early to do more chores. Then she could go read up more. Still tempted to probe for insecurities...so, so tempted.

But there was a better way to gain access. She had thought about it before, let the idea sink into her mind. She could hang with her uni brethren, and get out of this rainy muddy hole where people bitched about how much the main island sucked cause they were better and got all the sweet stuff. It wasn't like she wasn't used to danger now. Okay she wasn't but, she could get a shiny weapon.

That's if she was chosen, and not put into a internal slumber. That part freaked her out.

Kammy closed the laptop, lying in her bed and stared at the roof. Truth be told, she didn't like it here. As dangerous as it was, there could be something more on that island. There was nothing here but mud and campfire songs.

Yeah, time to level up.
