A text message was sent out. It had been intended for only the freshest recruits, but someone had goofed and hit At Everyone.

TEXT TO EVERYONE

Hi! Welcome to Deus! Orientation and Welcome meeting will be Wednesday, July 5th at 1pm. Please join us! Free gift bag and essential information to be handed out!

The doors were open at 12:45pm for anyone arriving early. A Hunter in a Life coat was handing out white and blue gift bags to everyone as they entered the room, telling them to find a seat.

Against the walls of the room some desks were arranged in order to make little booth-like areas.

At precisely 1pm on July 5th, Sherry called the meeting to order.

"Welcome, Everyone! This is just a brief meeting to go over some of the basics of being a hunter and living on the island here. We know you have a lot of questions but there will be some question time after a few short words but some of us."

"My name is Sherry, nice to meet you all. We've done a few of these things before, and I'm just gonna start with some of the more common questions we get." Sherry took deep breath and then began.

"First, Yes. This is real. You signed up for this. No, you can't go home. Don't worry, despite the current state of the main building, things aren't too bad around here." She smiled.

"Second. Yes you do get paid! As new recruits you won't receive pay for a month or two as you are on a probation period, but don't worry! Rent and Food is free as long you sleep in the dorms and eat the food provided by the cooks. Once you've been paid you can look into getting apartments in the town, and once you've been promoted you can even get a house. More information on this will be available later."

"Third. Normal Electronic devices do not work here. If you have ipods or 3DS's they won't work until you can afford to have them serviced to match our tech. Our tech is called 'runic', and it's pricey. Information on that is available in the labs, I'd suggest saving your pay for a few months before heading down to see about it. On a similar note, normal pets are prohibited here - the things that make the island work will prove lethal to them, so don't bring home stray kittens."

"Fourth. You are on call at all times. During your daily routines you will have assigned duties, but you are always on call. Think Emergency Response or something - because that's what you are now." She took a breath. "You will, after your probationary period, be allowed two days of leave a month - off island. More details will be given to you at a that time."

"Fifth. Everyone was given a pendant. Keep it with you at all times. If you are called off Island for a mission and things go bad, the pendant is your one-way ticket home. It's a lot like Dorothy's Ruby Slippers, except all you have to do is say "Deus Ex Machina" and you'll be returned safely here."

"Okay," she sounded relieved, "that's the day to day, paperwork things out of the way. Now to the real interesting things. Hold your questions, I know it's a lot, but let us get these basics out then you are free to ask."

"As I said, you signed up for this. You're more than you were. Those voices in your heads? They're real. They're your buddy for life, and they are your lifeline. You've created a bond that will be there for the rest of your life." She paused and looked around the room, and then with a small flash of light she summoned her own weapon, a 7ft tall glaive. "This one is mine, and yes, she does talk to me inside my head. You'll get used it."

"In return for this bond, you now have the ability to see Fear Creatures, and to Fight them. You'll be, with time and training, stronger and healthier than any human has a right to be. As it is now, you're harder to hurt - Your weapon will protect you. If you do get hurt, your weapon will heal you. You'll heal faster than should be possible. You'll be able to take hits that would gravely injure a normal human being." She gave them a very serious look.

"For example, I can stab Lucky here." She did just that. Sherry turned and leveled the pointy end of her weapon at Lucky's shoulder and stabbed him twice. There was no blood, there was no wound. "His shield, his weapon, is protecting him, and he's fine. The Fear Shield, as we call it, basically absorbs the damage - to a point at least." She smacked him with the flat of the blade one more time for emphasis.

"You'll find" Sherry continued as if stabbing someone with a giant weapon was not odd at all, "that you don't get sick as much as you used to. Normal illnesses aren't something we have to deal with. We can get sick, we can get hurt, and we do need medical care. It's just not going to quite be what you are used to. Similar, but a little different." She smiled.

"Seriously. If you notice yourself getting sick or if you get badly injured, please stop by the infirmary. You might have 'magic' healing powers now, but they do have limits. You are not immortal nor are you immune to everything."

She turned the slightly older bearded man standing at the front the room nearby. "Mr. Lucky Kercher will now tell you a few of the symptoms he's seen from some rather unpleasant ailments we can suffer from."

Sherry desummoned her weapon and gestured for Lucky to step forward.

The introduction Sherry gave was all the introduction the older man beside her (who she had stabbed through the shoulder just a few minutes before) seemed to want, or need. He was smartly dressed, with vivid green eyes, a short crop of dark hair, and a beard to match it. Lucky took a moment to adjust his thick-rimmed glasses, pull out a piece of paper, and began to read off of it in a near-monotone.

“The damage you’ve seen outside is the result of very dangerous enemies to our organization. You will have to have at least some situational awareness to survive your time as a Hunter. Things are quiet again now, but in the meantime: if you see any red butterflies or thorny green vines on the island, report them immediately to any division leader, assistant, or full hunter. If you have touched or been attacked by any red butterflies or thorny green vines on the island, report it immediately to any division leader, assistant, or full hunter. If you or someone you know exhibits the following list of symptoms, report it immediately to any division leader, assistant, or full hunter: headache, nausea, dizziness, fever, dramatic changes in eye and sclera color, the urge to bite, hunt, or kill other--”

Lucky stopped suddenly mid-symptom, having being given a swift kick in the ankle and a silent ‘not now’ expression from Sherry. After a moment of obvious frustration, he skipped to the beginning of the next paragraph, in the same slightly accented monotone he’d been delivering the rest of the information in.

“Ahem. Anyway. You’ve all been issued a coat, which you should be wearing right now, and maybe you were wondering why the logo on the back of your coat doesn’t match everyone else’s coats you've seen.” Still reading, Lucky held up one hand, five fingers.
Deus Ex Machina has five divisions, each with their own unique purpose. If you survive your time as a trainee, you will be able to contribute to your division’s specialization.”

“If your coat has two scythes on it, you’re in death division, with me, and Gale, and Rep. You are part of the intelligence operations. You will research, scout, infiltrate, and contain threats to Deus Ex Machina, and hopefully stop them before they become a serious problem. If not, at least you’ll warn us.”

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

“If your coat has a tree on it, you’re in life division, with Sherry. You will be doing research and development in FEAR-based sciences, runic technology, the creation of new weapons, medical procedures for problems you couldn’t even imagine, and more.”

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

“If your coat has a rising sun on it, you’re in sun division. You are the offensive front line when Deus Ex Machina is under attack, or launching one. Teamwork, training with your weapon, studying our enemies, and learning to improvise in any fight condition is the key to your survival and ours.”

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

“If your coat has a crescent moon on it, you’re in moon division. You are the defensive front line. Maintaining shields, rescuing other hunters, field medicine, building, and rebuilding are all part of your operations. You will work closely with sun division.”

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

“And, if your coat has a cloud pattern on it, you’re in mist division. Mist division is also referred to as the special ops division. You’ll be learning a little of everything I already listed. While the other divisions are highly specialized, you have the flexibility to combine those skills into something new, and take on any role in a given mission.”

And with that, he waved one hand and the entire piece of paper toward the next presenter beside him. “Gale here can tell you more about who you’ll all be reporting to - or running from, depending on what you did.”

OOC
Your hunter's division has already been determined when you enrolled your character! Your hunter can seek out other characters of the same division to learn more about what they can do.

It is possible for a hunter to change divisions later on, but it is fairly unusual.

A not-so-tall young man in his early twenties stood slightly off to the side, his long blond hair pulled back into a ponytail at the back of his head. His expression was serious, but it seemed to work as a default look on his face, in spite of everything.

"My name is Gale Gentry," he said, English accent clear as he shuffled a few papers around on his clipboard. "I'm a senior Death Division Hunter with a specialization in Artifacts and Artifact Retrieval. This essentially means that I scope out potential dangerous items around the world, usually in connection to the Horsemen, and make sure that they are taken care of properly."

He took a step towards the whiteboard and gestured at it.

"I've been a hunter with Deus Ex Machina for over six years now. I'm here to discuss a little bit about the Division Leaders of Deus first and foremost."

Quote:
On the whiteboard are the names of each leader, with a small blurb written underneath - definitely not in Gale's terrible chicken scrawl, neat and precise.

DEATH DIVISION

  • CAELIUS ( played by Zoobey ) - "The Death Division Leader," says Gale, sounding faintly strangled as he says the name. "He is perhaps the most recognizable and most well-known figure on this island. Do not get in his way, it will end badly for all of you. Do what he says, and try to do it well."

  • MARK ( played by Zoobey ) - "Mark is the Death Division Assistant," says Gale. There's a long pause while he seems to struggle with what to say next. "He's, er. Weird. Very weird. Anyway."

  • OZ ( played by Zoobey ) - "Not sure what he is, exactly. Er. You might see him skulking around, er...moving on."

LIFE DIVISION

  • DR. H ( played by Lizbot ) - "The Life Division Leader. I don't interact much with him, but I've heard he can be intense. Take caution with him."

  • MARY ( played by Lizbot ) - "The Life Division Assistant." Gale gestures. "I'm afraid I'm not too familiar with him, but he's worked with the Doctor for quite some time and is generally available to speak with."

SUN DIVISION

  • ALLAN ( played by Zoobey ) - Gale glances at the board with an expression of mild exasperation. "Allan is a very, er...interesting character. He is the Sun Division Leader, and can be a little...out there, so please be wary."

  • SIMON ( played by Lizbot ) - "The Sun Division Assistant is a serious man to balance out Allan's, er, eccentricities," says Gale. "He can generally be found alongside his Lead."

MOON DIVISION

  • EDITH ( played by Lizbot ) - "Edith is known to be a very dedicated Division Leader who takes her job seriously. She expects those in Moon too as well."

  • ZOE ( played by Zoobey ) - Gale glances at the board, his brow furrowed. "I'm afraid I don't know much about the Moon Division Assistant, but her name is Zoe, and she works alongside Edith."

MIST DIVISION

  • LANCE ( played by Marushii ) - There's a hint of a smile on Gale's face as he comes to the last name on the whiteboard. "Lance is the Mist Division Leader and a very good man willing to work hard with his trainees. As of right now, the Mist Division Assistant position is currently open, so Lance heads everything in that division."

His little presentation on the leaders taken care of, Gale turned back to the room at large.

"If you need to contact any of the leaders or assistants, you can find them in their offices most likely, or you can ask for assistance from one of the senior hunters; we're not the only ones that have experience here, there are many others who are dedicated, well trained hunters who are entirely willing to help anyone with any questions, especially those in your own division."

Gale's eyes moved across the room, an almost-smile on his face as he added, "On the same note, if you decide to participate in any sort of thing involving someone of a different division, come find me afterwards. I'll have something for you, as interdivision cooperation is extremely important."

He held out a hand sideways to the large, redheaded man to his right.

"Rep is another senior Death Hunter who is very well versed in learning to cope and survive on the island; he'll be discussing things in further detail, as well as what duties and training courses there are."

A very grizzled looking hunter who while the others spoke had been standing off to one side with his arms crossed, looking away from those present seemed to perk as Gale mentioned his name and spoke up next. He had a very Scottish accent but had apparently been talking to Americans long enough to deliberately enunciate his words and remain understandable. He nodded to Gale for introducing him

“So.” Rep said. “Like Gale said, I’m Rep. I’ve done a lot of survival s**t and other nonsense like that.”

“Basically, our job is dangerous. Really dangerous. You will be expected regardless of your division to attend missions as and when you are requested by your leads or other division’s leads, just like Sherry said. When your phone buzzes, pay attention to it.”

Missions

“Missions fall into categories.” he said.

Duties are the most common and vary by division, if you are life, cleaning cages, death, filing s**t or whatever, they can range, but as a new trainee you’ll find yourself primarily assigned to these sort of things, do them consistently and well and you’ll be able to move up. When you get promoted to full hunter there is the chance to specialise in other directions, projects you might find interesting as you work your way up, propose these at the yearly meetings and depending on the division you may get help to further your goals.” He looked a little uncertain at the idea of a fresh faced newbie proposing something to Caelius. “But just remember that your access, funding and permissions are narrower now than they will be when you move up in the world”

“The second type is not quite a mission though you certainly can file mission reports on these just as you can for duties if you are bored enough. These are training courses, each division having its own favourite - though anyone can take them. These unlock access runic weapons which will be very useful to you on external missions. If you do nothing else I strongly recommend at least passing jenga for your bandages. It can be the difference between life and death for you or a friend.”

“I’ve put a list of these courses up on the intranet for you guys if you need them and what s**t they unlock.”

"Lastly, the main mission type you'll probably run into is the external mission. These ones will take you off the island to anywhere in the world. They have grades too usually classed by danger, you can find the information on the assignment but A class and S class missions are normally island-wide and critically dangerous situations, a B class might involve bringing a full hunter. You can volunteer for these on your phone, or as I said these might involve a spontaneous text from a division leader."

"When you attend a mission make sure you are prepared with your runic weapons, good clothing suited for anything from the desert to the arctic, a small emergency kit of supplies, things like that. You may end up stranded so think about everything you can. Goggles are invaluable, scarves are versatile. Keep all of this somewhere close to hand, we don't get tornadoes here but its a similar principle, you won't always get time to prepare."

Artifacts

"Now artifacts, first off, if you have any questions about artifact, Gale here's your man to ask. I might have a good lot of them but he studies them and is a good way to get pointed in the right direction." He nodded in Gale's direction

"So we deal with very dangerous things as hunters, magic basically and creatures composed of fear. This fear generates things more powerful than you could imagine, items which can make you incredibly strong or even make you able to do strange things like flip gender, turn into a platypus, you name it. These are ranked from A class to B to E Class, there is such things as a S class artifact but pray you never touch one of those, they can kill you just by doing so, I'll get into that later."

"How do you get an artifact? You find it, you research it, usually in the library or whatever and you go find it. Again, if you have further questions about this or want a few tips on a few places where artifacts have been previously found, ask Gale or one of the other hunters who have a lot of them and they'll point you in the direction of some non fatal ones."

Legacies and don't touch stupid things

“As for the fatal ones. Lucky mentioned our enemies, they range widely but ultimately many are practically artifacts themselves and therefore very very dangerous. Like so dangerous they might not even kill you but keep you alive forever in eternal torment, kill your friends and family, things like that. They are distinctive in their links to colours and the fact that they appear sentient. In addition to Lucky's advice, if you are approached by anyone offering power, something you've always wanted, appealing to your ego, your desires, anything which might even for a SECOND seem too good to be true, tell them to ******** off. If you don't you run the risk of death or worse. Like I said, our jobs are very ******** dangerous and you need to bear that in mind at all times. Take things seriously. If you've got any questions or suspicions about s**t, like he said, tell someone, speak to someone about it, if you are too shy for that even ask on twitter, just don't let it slide and don't suffer it alone, you could be a ticking time bomb for the whole island.”

Nodding he added.

"And on that be careful warning, can I just ******** stress one major thing you should be bearing in mind at all times? DON'T TOUCH s**t. If you see a chalice made of gold don't touch it or you'll end up like the guy in Indiana Jones. Don't touch anything which seems like it might be dangerous to touch, if its humming, glowing, speaking, doing anything out of the ordinary leave it alone. Curiosity killed the cat and has killed so many other tougher hunters than you. Touching s**t is a leading cause of death for hunters so if you do do it, at least now I can say I told you so."

Housing and Bar

Seeming satisfied he'd covered the part he considered most important Rep relaxed a little.
"Finally, on a less horrible note, if any of you are looking for some differing accommodation, once you are paid there is the option of some refurbished flats and houses in towns. Consider this a goal to work towards and more reason to get through to the next step of your training. Come see me when you get there."

"And until you do, just a bit of self promotion but there's a bar in towns owned by myself, feel free to stop by, and if you have any retail talents, we are missing a lot of s**t, come see me and we'll see if we can get you set up with something." he smirked. "We could use some talented hairdressers, for instance."

WELCOME TO PART 1 OF THE ORIENTATION

There's a fair bit to read so take your time! You don't need to know everything at once! Have your character settle in for a bit, mingle, quote players also at the orientation and ask questions where relevant. You can have them having joined just at the beginning or in the middle or near the end, wherever they join is what they'll ICly know!

JUST A NOTE: Most of this information is just the main Deus info, so if you've read this before, feel free to just skim and take a note that your newbie character now knows this stuff.

gaia_crown [ SETTING ]: Think, classroom, very large classroom. (See first post for free IC gifts). On the side of the classroom, someone has put up a refreshments table of mostly digestive biscuits and for some reason a lot of Dr. Pepper, making it feel more like a mingling/ group bonding exercise than an actual lecture.

gaia_crown [ NEWBIES ]: This rp will be for you! There will be 3 parts to this rp, the first is just an IC introduction! Now that the lecture part is over, now is the time talk to others, socialize, and just have a good time. Remember to QUOTE anyone you want to talk to and QUOTE any of the rpers listed above if your players has any questions. Otherwise, why not introduce yourselves to each other, including other newbies and veterans alike!

gaia_crown [ NON NEWBIE CHARACTERS ]: Non newbie characters can come in as well to help newbies! All are invited! Some might be just sitting in to listen/ contribute/ help after the lecture/ others may be here to see if they recognize any Hogwarts first years for their House newbies.

gaia_crown [ If you are a specialist Hunter ]: Feel free to make a note of it in their OOC and what they do as well as talk and introduce themselves that way.

gaia_crown [ This is part of the MENTORSHIP ] and anyone you quote/interact with is eligible for the trophy prizes/ minipets. You will also get x2 rp points by the end of this thread.

gaia_crown [ THE NEXT UPDATE TO THIS THREAD WILL HAPPEN JULY 7TH @ 10PM]. Till then, mingle, invite others to come in, and enjoy.

Off to the side was Stormy in casual summer wear. Her division coat was tied about her waist at the moment, and in her hands was a grocery bag of mini candy bars, courtesy of the stash she and Gale kept. She was a waif of a hunter, thin and small, but the visible scars on her arm and face belied a rough experience at Deus. Nonetheless, she looked approachable, if dreamy-eyed, as she watched the presentations and newcomers with interest.

Dawson, he who was shaped like a friend simultaneously fat and toned, took up a spot near refreshments with a desk for himself. The usual orientation spiel wasn't for him, but it did provide an opportunity for him to check out veteran and newbie hunters alike--and he liked to take up socializing events when he could.

On his desk was a bag of odd-looking rocks, each carved with a symbol that seemed to make it hum with power. Some of the more apprised fresh meat might have known what they were: runes. He picked mostly supreme ones from his own collection to show off, though he had some examples of the various stages of power just in case.

Leaning back in his chair jut enough to make it creak, Dawson popped open a Dr. Pepper and began to chug as he listened and watched.

America sat where she could get the best view of the hot teacher looking guy and nearly fell out of her seat when he was introduced as Lucky. He owed her a date and boy was she gonna collect. Sure he was a little older than her self imposed datable age range, but exceptions could be made!

Throughout the lectures, she'd had a notepad and pencil out and a lot of what she wrote was actually about the information she hadn't known but a lot of it was also about how cute Gale was and handsome Lucky was and how Rep looked like a really rough ginger bear cursed into human form.

Ah, orientation day. It had been a long time since she had first met and tortured someone by having Allan force them out with her on a mission. Kim smirked a little at the memory as she looked over all the new faces.

Leaning on the wall she watched and listened to all the displays and explanations of life on the island for the new hunters flicking her hair back from her eyes a little as she looked at the coats to see what new sun hunters she could taint... Er.. Meet.

When Rep mentioned not touching artifacts she winced. She was still carrying one with her that was of the insane self danger sort and she pulled it out of her pocket again to look at its glowing prettiness. Yeah mental note, talk to someone else about that....

Charlotte took a seat near the front of the room, pulling a small notebook from the many layers of fabric that comprised today's outfit. She made a loud jingling with every movement as the many pendants and good luck charms around her neck and wrists were waved around. She watched the presenters with a look of deep fascination - especially the last one.

Here and there, she took notes, but the scribbling didn't seem to follow along with the key information.

Tempest had seriously considered skipping the orientation entirely. She didn't consider herself that new. But it was probably for the best that she at least show up for appearance's sake.

She sat near the back, phone in her lap, discreetly texting. Though her resting expression seemed bored, it was clear she'd spent hours preparing to be there. Everything from her braided hair, to her makeup, to her outfit, were all as perfect as she could get them to be on a humid tropical island.

Sy decided to stay throughout the whole orientation. Perhaps this time, he could sit and listen and know a bit more about Deus since he didn't really get to go the first time. He remembers being out of the pod for a short time and went straight into a group mission that only lead to a narrow escape.

He sat comfortably in the 4th row, still not used to his own mobile phone which was snugly kept in his pocket, and looked around. There was no one he knew. he only knewthe girl at the front of the room, Sherry, but there was no way he would wave at her..he didn't want to embarrass her in front of all these people.
