The last several months had been an absolute blur. Kayden had moved out of Anella’s place about two months after getting there—it had been way too hard to stay there and see her cousin with her girlfriend and just…see how happy they were. It hurt. It hurt way more than she wanted to let on.
Living alone however was starting to get kind of dangerous. She was hardly ever sober now, she knew that, and some part of her mind kept telling her to get help, that Farrah wouldn’t have wanted her to fall apart like this, that this wasn’t who she was supposed to have become…
But eventually with enough glasses of wine or shots of vodka, that voice stopped talking.
It wasn’t often that she ran out of liquor, because Slightly Sober Kayden always made sure to buy enough to last her through the week, if not enough for two weeks. Though, perhaps she was drinking a little more heavily as the anniversary of Farrah’s death approached, and perhaps that was why she was out in the middle of the day, walking towards her favorite liquor store, hoping to replenish her supply and get home before she got caught being so drunk in public. It was kind of disgraceful but…
She had to do what she had to do.

Zenner looked through her fridge. Then her pantry. Then her fridge again. She went back and forth for about 10 minutes before finally accepting that she had to go to the store. She wrote out a quick list and grabbed a bottle of water before heading out the front door. As she was leaving, she took a quick glance around her studio apartment, feeling a sense of pride that can only come from working hard for something and earning it with your blood, sweat and tears. As she walked down the street, she waved and said hello to a few people she knew, then turned to her list, going over everything, feeling like she forgot something. She almost had it when she bumped into someone. "Hey! Watch where you're-" She said before recognizing the face. "Kayden?"

Kayden blinked and frowned, glad that she hadn’t yet made it to the store or the bump would have definitely caused her to drop her haul in the state that she was in. Though when she heard her name, her frown only deepened and she looked at the owner of the voice with a confused expression.
She blinked, trying to bring her into clearer focus, and then scowled slightly and frowned again, blinking once more.
“...Zenner? You’re the last person I would have ever expected to see here…you’ve gotten so old.”
It wasn’t meant to be rude, but she had been made to spend time with the younger girl back in England while her family lived there, and their families had been close but.
They had never really been close. The age gap had been too wide and a pre-teen just wasn’t…cool enough to hang out with someone as old as Kayden had been.
“...I like your hair. Those colors suit you.”

Zenner recovered from the sudden impact without dropping her list, but barley. As she grabbed the paper out of the air, she looked up to find…..Kayden. She hadn’t seen her in a decade and she looked a little worse for wear, but she was sure it was her.
“Kayden? Wow, it’s been…ten years? You look different. How have you been?”
She really didn’t want to see anyone today, but it was nice to see the other girl again. It had been a while, but she always enjoyed hanging out with Kayden so it was nice to see her again.

Kayden hesitated and nodded slowly. “I…have been. I suppose. I’m still standing, and that’s something…when did you get to this city? It has been…”
She wrinkled her nose and shrugged slightly. “Ten years sounds about right…but. How odd to be in the same spot again…what have you been up to?”
Honestly, she didn’t want to care but…she kind of did. She kind of wanted to care a little bit. It was nice to see a familiar face…someone who knew her…had known her before…well.
Before everything.
“I hadn’t expected to ever see you again, if I’m being honest.”

“Me either. Last i knew you were in England. What are you doing here?”
Zenner stuffed her list in her pocket, her errand temporarily forgotten.
“Are you headed to the store? We could go together. I was gonna restock my pantry today anyway so we could go together if you want some company”

Kayden hesitated, watching Zenner for a long moment before answering and finally running a hand through her hair and shrugging. “I. Guess that’s fine. I wasn’t heading to the real store but the liquor store but. I don’t mind joining you if you want. Yeah. That. That sounds fine to me, honestly.”
It would take extra time but. Having someone to be around might be better than not having someone to be around…and Zenner was a familiar face from before her life went to s**t…
She hadn’t even met Farrah back then and—
The twinge of pain in Kayden’s chest made her hands clench into fists and she grimaced. “I moved here about a year ago. There was an accident that happened back in England and I came here to start over. I couldn’t. Handle it there any longer. What about you? What brought you here?”

"I was gonna hit up the liquor store afterwards anyway so that works for me" She wasn't originally planning to go to the liquor store, but she was running low so it wouldn't be a wasted trip. Besides, Kayden had grown up and so had she. Zenner definitely wanted to see if there was still a spark of friendship there after all of these years. "I'm so sorry to hear that. If you want to talk about it, I've been told I'm a good listener. My dad got a job here so we moved into the middle of the city. It was a nice house but....well we had an accident too."

Well…if Zenner was going to go there anyway...there wasn’t much reason not to tag along with her…and honestly, pasta sounded pretty good, if Kayden was going to think about food…mac and cheese sounded pretty good…
“It’s. I’m not really over it. I was engaged, and. Well. I got engaged and some psycho decided to shoot up the club we were at and. Well.” She drew in a deep breath and shrugged, trying to force back all of the emotions that she could but.
“It was bullshit is what it was. I’m not really over it but, here we are. I’m living in this city. Was staying with a cousin but…I know she was getting tired of me and why wouldn’t she so now I’m just. Here. And doing the best I can.”
Pausing for a moment, Kayden glanced at Zenner, frowning slightly. “...What happened with you?”

"s**t. Kayden, I'm so sorry." Zenner breathed a heavy sigh. "Well, I got in an accident and ******** up my knee real bad. My parents were out of town and when they tried to come back early to take care of me, their plane crashed. They didn't make it."

Kayden paused and then frowned slightly. “...I’m sorry too. That’s.” That was a lot, honestly and Kayden didn’t really know what to say about that and instead she just hummed, feeling suddenly awkward.
Perhaps spending time with an old acquaintance and talking about deaths of loved ones was…not really…
The best way to…reconnect.
“...Maybe we should hit up the liquor store first and just…skip the…everything else?”

Zenner pulled her list out of her pocket, looked at it, and then looked back at Kayden. She crumpled it and put it back in her pocket. "Throw in some takeout and you got a deal. Wanna just grab some supplies and head back to my place? Maybe catch up about the last decade? It sounds like we've both been through a lot."

Kayden hesitated for a moment and finally just shrugged while giving a half nod. “Sure. That sounds…like something that we could do. I’m fine with takeout.”
Not that she really ate much but, whatever. It would be nice to not have to be completely alone for a little while, and…maybe she could rekindle…whatever friendship she had once had with Zenner…
Then again, maybe they’d just get too drunk to remember anything and could just go back to living their lives separately.
…As they should.
