BOLD xxx»» Even as a little boy, Hal was always the first one to jump in the deep end, the first one to speak up in class, even if he didn't know what he was talking about, and typically always the one to throw the first punch. The combination of his father's stormy temper and his mother's confidence left Hal seemingly afraid of nothing and no one, never one to back down from a fight, and never willing to give up and go home. He's used to speaking his mind and acting decisively, even if it often gets him in over his head and makes enemies he could have avoided.
OBSTINATE xxx»» Hal has always been notoriously stubborn. Truth be told, he was spoiled and indulged far too much as a child, being his parent's golden oldest, and he never quite got used to not getting his way. While his stubbornness also makes him very loyal to his family and friends, he never forgets a slight and would have a lot less stress in his life if he could just learn to let things go. He tends to brood on past mistakes and has a hard time when in conflict, especially with his children, because he can't see any point of view but his own.
RECKLESS xxx»» Hal's has never looked before leaping, and while he's been remarkably lucky in that no horrible mistakes have resulted from this... he does have four kids out of wedlock that he's now responsible for. Andddd his brother barely speaks to him. Andddd his parents are continuously disappointed in him. But in general, he claims to have no regrets, and believes he's lived his life to the fullest. To his credit, he is trying to instill a slightly more cautious approach to life in his children.

He was never quite obnoxiously arrogant, but he does think somewhat highly of himself, and it was almost comically easy to set him off or provoke him into a fight, especially as a teenager and young man, which his younger brother abused, frequently. Hal's no idiot, but sarcasm is probably his biggest weakness. He tends to take things literally, and has no patience for mind games.
HONEST xxx»» For all his numerous flaws and shortcomings, Hal is a very honest, straightforward person. Not only is he a terrible liar, he considers it fairly scummy, and will generally give it to people straight. He may not always be the most open person, but he would never intentionally string someone along or deceive them, and tries to instill the same virtue in his kids, with mixed results. In general, the quickest way to his lose his trust and respect is to lie to his face. He hates feeling tricked or mocked behind his back.
GENEROUS xxx»» Hal is a pretty generous person. He's not at all stingy or miserly with his money or time, and in general, if he can help someone out, he'll do it, even if there's nothing in it for him. He had no qualms about taking in any of his kids, and while he may not be on good terms with all of their mothers, he's never made them feel unwanted or as if they weren't part of the family. He can be very self-centered, but he's also a very giving person, especially when he cares about someone.

CHILDHOOD xxx»» Henry "Hal" Deering has a very happy childhood. He was born into a family of unapologetic blood traitors who'd nearly gotten themselves all killed during the Second Wizard War, but his parents, Jeremy Deering, who worked for the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes, and Penelope Deering, who worked for the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, survived, settled down in Dover, and decided to raise a family after the war was over. Several years after they married came Hal, followed a year later by his younger brother, Raymond. The Deerings wanted more children, but found themselves unable to conceive again, and so were content with their two sons, who they doted on. Hal was the more outgoing, charismatic of the two brothers, while Raymond was quiet and moody. Hal felt that Raymond was always trying to get him in trouble, and Raymond felt that Hal unfairly got all the attention and praise. The two fought like cats and dogs, much to the despair of their parents, who hoped they would grow closer when they were older and more mature.
SCHOOL YEARS xxx»» It was very obvious which house Hal would be sorted into upon his entrance into Hogwarts, and he was delighted to become a Gryffindor, like his father. He excelled in Defense Against the Dark Arts, failed miserably when it came to Potions, and in general spent more time fooling around with his friends than he did taking notes or studying. He tried out as a beater for Gryffindor, but found himself relegated to reserve, and so had plenty of time to get into trouble. Which he did. Frequently. Raymond started school a year later, and was sorted into Hufflepuff, like their mother. He was content to stick to his studies, turning up his nose at Hal's antics, and the two generally avoided each other whenever possible. In his sixth year Hal met a muggleborn Ravenclaw named Ava, and the two began dating, but broke it off shortly before they graduated.
ADULTHOOD xxx»» Hal would have liked to have been an auror or international quidditch star, but the reality was that he was not good enough for either, so he got a job as a guard at Azkaban, which, while somewhat soul-crushing, paid the bills and allowed him plenty of free time to travel, which he enjoyed very much. At the ripe old age of nineteen, he received a letter from Ava, who flatly stated that after they'd graduated and gone their separate ways, she had discovered that she was pregnant, and much further along than she would have guessed, at that. Having already started a job in America, she'd given birth to a baby girl in Virginia, who was now a toddler.
She couldn't take care of the child anymore, and her family didn't want her, so it was him or giving the little girl up for adoption. Hal did not particularly want to accept all the responsibilities of fatherhood, but after insisting on a muggle paternity test (although the girl looked almost identical to how he had as a baby) he took in his daughter, Riley. At first there was a lot of passing Riley off on his parents, but he began to bond with the little girl and they were soon inseparable. However, single fatherhood put a damper on dating, and so he mostly resigned himself to flings and one night stands, one of which produced another child, Cadence, who was removed from her mother Harper's care when she was six months old and placed into Hal's.
Hal then resigned from his post as a guard and bought the Leaky Cauldron in Diagon Alley with a loan from his parents and what was left of his savings, wanting to give his daughters a more stable life. He began dating an Italian muggle named Bianca Bove, but the relationship ended shortly after she discovered she was pregnant. The two remained friends and co-parented the son that resulted from this, Devin, until Bianca was tragically killed in a car accident when Devin was three. Hal sank into a depression over this put put on a brave face for the sake of the kids, who had seen the woman as a beloved aunt of sorts. Three years later a brief fling with a woman from Germany, Emilie, produced another son, Felix. Emilie's pureblooded family was infuriated that Hal was not willing to marry their daughter, who had no interest in marrying him either, and Emilie ended up marrying another wealthy pureblood and giving her son to her great-uncle to raise. Hal didn't see Felix very frequently until the boy's guardian died when he was seven, and he came to live with Hal and his half-siblings in the UK.

In her view, life is too short to waste time holding grudges or getting upset about things that are relatively minor in the big picture.

CHILDHOOD xxx»» Riley was the result of a teenaged relationship between her father, Henry Deering, a Gryffindor pureblood, and her mother, Ava Fulton, a Ravenclaw muggleborn. While they broke up before graduating from school, her mother was shocked to find herself pregnant after having emigrated to the US for work. She had Riley and attempted to raise her on her own for two years, but found herself overwhelmed and contacted Riley's father, Hal, who agreed, somewhat begrudgingly, to take the toddler in. From then on Riley lived in England with her father and his family, and while they got off to a rocky start, quickly became very close. Other siblings followed suit from her father's other short-lived relationships and flings, and Riley welcomed the addition of a younger sister and two younger brothers. She was disappointed that she could not attend Hogwarts, like her father, but was excited to start at Salem all the same.
SCHOOL YEARS
»» Riley was sorted into Lynx House while at Salem, and quickly made friends, joining the quodpot team and exploring the woods of Massachusetts. She was occasionally teased for her mangled British accent while at school, but enjoyed all the different cultures she was exposed to and how different American witches and wizards were from their British counterparts. Her best friend Ana even began teaching her a bit of Spanish.

Cady is rarely in a bad mood, and even when she is, it never lasts long, so when she is noticeably upset something is usually very wrong.

CHILDHOOD xxx»» Cadence is the result of a one-time fling between her father, Henry Deering, a former Gryffindor and a pureblood wizard, and her mother, Harper Gregory, a muggle woman who worked as a dancer in a club. Cady is not really privy to the details, but her mother was in no shape to care for a child and after several calls to family services, she ended up in the custody of her father, Hal, at the age of six months old. Cady was an extremely chipper and energetic child, and typically delighted in annoying her siblings both older and younger. As the oldest in the family to go to Hogwarts, seeing as her older sister Riley was born in the US, she was thrilled to get her letter, although she had been displaying magic since she was a toddler and knew it was coming. Seeing as her father ran The Leaky Cauldron in Diagon Alley, it made getting school supplies extremely easy.
SCHOOL YEARS
FIRST YEAR»» Cady very much enjoyed her first year. She was sorted into Gryffindor like her father and became close friends with another housemate, Elisabet. While she got lost plenty of times, she enjoyed her new classes and being in Gryffindor, and there was even a Halloween carnival, which made her 12th birthday that much better. (She went as a mermaid, to match Elisa's pirate). SECOND YEAR»» Cady tried out for the quidditch team and made reserve chaser, to her delight. She was also pleased to not be the youngest in the castle anymore. THIRD YEAR»» Cady continued with the quidditch team, and spent the year annoying her younger brother and taking her new electives, which she mostly enjoyed. FOURTH YEAR»» Cady made first string as a chaser, to her surprise, and also made the acquaintance of the Lockwood twins', her friend Sher's standoffish cousins. FIFTH YEAR»» Cady had a semi-enjoyable year of harassing the Lockwoods, getting a little too hyped over quidditch matches, and halfheartedly studying for her OWLs while stuffing her face with candy from Honeydukes, and mourning the loss of her guinea pig. (Don't worry, she got a new (stolen from her OWL exam) kitten). SIXTH YEAR»» Cady enjoyed the break from constant (haha, as if) studying and had more free time, which unfortunately resulted in more trouble. During one memorable detention she met a younger Slytherin named Momo, who just so happened to be one Byron Lockwood's 'ahem' betrothed. SEVENTH YEAR»» Cady unfortunately had to buckle down and get serious for her seventh year. Although not too serious, of course. She still made plenty of time for goofing off, trying to ignore her lingering anxiety about being shoved out into the 'real world' when her Hogwarts days were done. She might have been of age, but she still felt like a kid.

He doesn't like to be unprepared for any situation or event and gets very overwhelmed when things seem to be out of his direct control. He hates surprises and once crawled under a table during his eighth birthday party because someone invited a clown and it was terrible. He's working on it, but don't expect him to be all smiles when his long lost twin shows up.
QUICK-WITTED xxx»» Devin is a very quiet, stoic sort of person, and because of this is often assumed to be dumber than he actually is. He's far more observant than he lets on, he simply doesn't talk much, preferring to have actually have something important to say when he opens his mouth. In general, while he's not the sort of person to speak up unless absolutely necessary, he does enjoy surprising people with the occasional sarcastic bombshell.
HUMBLE xxx»» Devin is a very humble person, unlike the rest of his prideful, sometimes conceited family. He doesn't have a poor opinion of himself, but he's not one to talk himself up or brag either, and he can't stand people who never stop talking about themselves. He'd much rather let his actions speak, rather than his words, and would rather wait someone out and show them up later than go back and forth about who's better. Compared to his family, his modesty is both refreshing and occasionally exasperating.
PEACEFUL xxx»» Devin doesn't like to argue or fight. Hates it, in fact. He'll do anything to avoid a conflict, and watching two people get into a verbal or physical disagreement sets his teeth on edge. Growing up he was always the peacemaker of the family and the one to talk someone else down from saying something truly cruel. When someone insults him, he usually just ignores them or walks away, and it would take a lot to wear him down to the point where he'd be actually willing to throw a punch. CHILDHOOD xxx»» Devin is the result of a relationship between his father, Henry Deering, a British wizard, and his mother, Bianca Bove, an Italian muggle. The two met after Bianca emigrated alone to the UK for work, and struck up a casual relationship, which eventually grew into something more serious. While it was evident that they loved each other deeply, they were very different people who fought often, and while they were at first excited to learn that Bianca was pregnant, quickly realized that they couldn't both be together and parent a child as a couple. They broke up while Bianca was still pregnant, but remained on friendly terms and kept in contact. Devin spent the first three years of his life being raised by both his parents, even if they were no longer romantically involved. Unfortunately, his mother died in a car accident when he was three, and Devin never really got to know her, being raised by his father and living with him and his half-siblings from his father's other 'relationships' after that. While he rarely got along with his siblings, he was for the most part happy, spending a lot of time in Diagon Alley, as his father owns and operates The Leaky Cauldron. He received a Hogwarts letter just like his older sister Cadence, and looked forward to his time at Hogwarts.

He makes friends pretty naturally and is very accepting of other people, so others are inclined to like him and he's inclined to like them. While not overwhelmingly happy-go-lucky, he's typically smiling and he's typically in a good mood, which makes his rare bad moods all the more unnerving, a la 'beware the smiling man when he is angry'. But in general, Felix doesn't get angry. (He gets even).

He's very determined and usually doesn't know when to let up, and is always very set on getting what he wants when he wants it. He's very enthusiastic and energetic about it and tends to fixate on one specific thing for quite some time. CHILDHOOD xxx»» Felix is the product of a short-lived fling between his father, a British wizard named Henry Deering, and his mother, a German witch named Emilie Lorenz. When his mother returned to Germany and her strict, purist family and realized she was pregnant, she was horrified, but her parents insisted on her keeping the baby because the father was also pureblooded. However, Felix was never regarded as a true member of the family due to being the result of a premarital affair and was often mocked and dismissed as a b*****d child. He was primarily raised by the other black sheep of the family, his great uncle Melchior, a potioneer who was deemed an outcast for marrying a muggle woman as a young man. Felix enjoyed a happy childhood with the widower until his uncle was killed in an potions accident. His mother refused to take him in, having since married a 'suitable man' and had other children, and so his father arrived to take him to live with him. Felix quickly adjusted to his new life in England.
