How many years had it been since then? The day when a falling meteor wiped out more than half of the planet's population and rendered almost all of the continents inhabitable. All save for one on which walls were quickly erected and one had to earn their keep in order to stay on it, failing which he/she risked eviction within a week and certain death out in the wastelands.
Somewhere within one of the waiting rooms of the arena, Kyle leaned back in his seat with a face towel draped over his face, trying his best to block out the sounds and thoughts of the crowd who were cheering excitedly overhead. Five minutes more till the battle royale started. Five minutes till he had to get out there to defend his title as the reigning champion of the arena from all the other challengers.
Taking a deep breath, Kyle gave a long resigned sigh. This really wouldn't do in the long run. There were only so many times that broken bones could mend until the damage became more permanent. < That is true. > He quickly sat up, the towel falling from his face to the ground beneath his feet. Did someone just speak to him in his mind?
< Oooh... so you're a telepath as well huh? That's interesting... >
< Who are you? Don't you know that it's rude to project into peoples' minds like this? >
Amused laughter.
< But it's so amusing to hear their response and play along with them. Such a waste of this talent that you've been given. Tsk tsk... >
Picking up the towel from the ground, Kyle started towards the nearby sink to wash the dirt and grime out of it.
< Tell you what. If you win the battle royale tonight, I'll get you out of here and you'll work for me. >
Kyle blinked.
< Wait. What? >
< The battle royale's going to start soon. I'll give you the entire evening to think it over and then you can give me your answer after winning the match. Good luck. >
... whoa. Was all that for real or was whoever this mysterious person who also happened to be a telepath toying with him?
In any case, Kyle didn't have much time to think about that for now. He would get out there and defend his title as always and then he would meet whoever this was who could jolly well be his ticket out of this dreadful existence.
