When the world was crumbling, vermin crawled in, and not the type of parasites that Mel approved. Instead, hunters seemed to see the cracks in their home, their home, their energy, and came just when they were trying to recover. It wasn't enough that one home was gone, but they sniffed their burrow and were here to flush them out. He wouldn't allow it, and seeing them here only brought on the suspicious that everything was their fault. Something horrendous had happened and bring a blight upon their home, and he was sure they were the rats carrying it in.
The hunter that came was pristine, well kept, and armed. Standing there, he pulled back his clock to get the full reach and brought his clawed hands out, ready to depend his home ad his friends for their futures. They weren't beetles on their backs.
Melvin despised horsemen, but felt a sick shiver at the clan of Famine. There would be no amount of death that would repay the debt of taking those he cared about from his life, and he would show them the same uncaring disregard that he had shown back. When he came, seeing the fragile pieces of their new homeland, he was more disgusted with their facade, and stared at the skeletal bug that stood in tatters and human clothes before him. It was with a raw sense of disgust that it looked like a rotting, mutant of himself, but how often did they like their lies and illusions. He wouldn't be fulled and it was the certainty of his own existence that gave him confidence that he was the correct and not the counterfeit.
Saliva was summoned, and noticing the action, the horsemen lunged, shrieking in a pitch that rang through him as he scraped and swiped, tearing his coat and into his sweater as he fired back, trying to blast it into some distance. The thing wanted to be up close, and dodged and jumped against the wall, clinging, before leaping again, but he followed and shot ahead trying to predict where it would dash and move before it was back up close again.
Everything was a quick succession of shots and blurring movements before it stopped, crunching under one last shot and puffing into ash.
Panting, Melvin shot himself with his charge. One down. Probably a million to go.
