If Jude found anything about this place strange, it didn’t show on his face. Neither did any potential annoyance or frustration at being put in such a lame position. He took the uniform without flinching, and found his position unhesitatingly, only briefly flicking a look to the young man assigned to duty beside him.

The extent of his conversation was a slight bob of his head in a nod, a hesitant moment before he offered a hello to go along with it, somewhere between reluctant and uncertain. In the back of his mind, a disgruntled voice told him to be more charismatic, but that simply wasn’t Jude. Jude was quiet, and a little reserved, and had a bad case of resting b***h face.

After just a hesitant moment, he slid away to deal with one of the tables. But flustered as he was, instead of doing the job properly he dropped a twinkie onto his charge’s plate. For a moment, the cafeteria was quiet: then it erupted into something like fury as the entire table scrabbled to steal their fellow’s prize.

Jude, for his part, retreated back to stand next to Lucien with a bit of a wince, flicking him a sideways look. “Important note. Apparently, Twinkies are as good as gold.”

It wasn’t much of an ice breaker, but certainly it was better than standing there silently like an idiot.

Jude wasn't exactly tough, but when he saw Lucien in trouble -- then he waded in to haul the other man out, calling for help to deal with the furious (hungry) young woman who'd been less than amused by the prospect of a book for dinner.

They were barely out of the little fight before a bigger one began: a cluster of people shouting over by a machine that apparently served seaweed, furious about it being empty.

"When are they refilling it?" a frantic young man said, clutching at Jude's lapels, and he tried to shrug him off. Instead, he got drawn into what had grown from a fight to a riot.
