Necromancers are practitioners of a forbidden magic that manipulates the dead and bends them to their will. They are usually worshipers of Kuolena, the goddess of the dead, but it is not a requirement and some are atheists.
Necromancers are dangerous beings with no regard for the dead or the living and seek knowledge and mastery over death. They will do anything to gain knowledge and will go so far as to conduct experiments on ghosts or living beings to create new spells or potions that will aid them in their research. They shun society and generally keep their practices underground and a complete secret, but also to avoid execution for practicing necromancy.
It is a wise idea to never corner or approach a necromancer, as they bear no qualms about destroying people to keep their secret. They have a general disregard for life and the laws of nature.
The Ghost Kingdom has a problem with necromancers and has actively gone after them. After the War with the Demon King, many necromancers were wiped out, leaving the rest to flee to the underground, never to be heard from again. A law was passed forbidding necromancy under the threat of death. The Ghost Kingdom assembled a group of knights called the Hunters of the Light to hunt down any necromancer or anyone suspected of practicing the art. Many a necromancer have fallen to the Hunters, but as their numbers dwindle, so does the need for the Knights.
They are allies of Kuolena and used to be in service to the Demon King before his death. They eagerly await the Demon King's resurrection.
Necromancers are found just about anywhere, but they mostly stick to the Dark Kingdom or the Ghost Kingdom. They tend to stay away from the Psychic Kingdom, as the Psychics can sniff out a necromancer.
They use magic as a primary weapon, but carry bladed weapons as a backup. Since necromancy is a dark art, it carries heavy penalties for its' use. One must be trained properly otherwise the penalties will be much harsher. Many a hopeful experimenter have died due to their foolishness in trying a spell that usually requires years of experience to use.
The practice also takes a toll on the mental and physical state of the practitioner. Necromancers have been known to be pale and spindly, with their eye-colors changing from their usual color to a ghastly pale white. This is called the Ghost Eye and is an obvious indicator of a skilled necromancer. Although, it doesn't occur in every necromancer.
With heavy practice, comes heavy mental deterioration. Many have gone mad or have committed suicide over the art as the penalties have an effect on the mind.
Necromancy is not for the weak-minded or naive. One does not become a necromancer for the good of humanity. A selfish thirst for knowledge and a disregard for all things sacred are required.
