The training fields were meant to be where trainees honed themselves in handling their weapons and forging deep bonds with the entity with whom they were so intimately connected. But no one started out perfect. Mistakes were always made and in this case, mistakes were even encouraged.
Because of this, there were always safety precautions, FEAR dampers to prevent charge attacks from being fatal (especially if you had a bad gambling habit), and usually there were those who were physically present to watch over the proceedings.
That day, Pedro found himself in charge of keeping an eye on the trainees. He didn't mind. He always liked getting to know the new recruit and making sure that they felt welcomed and encouraged despite constantly missing their targets in the beginning.
Of course, there were always geniuses that didn't need his help and he left these to their own devices. They weren't interested in what he had to say, especially not when they were "From a cheap-a** division like Mist."
Unfortunately for said genius (a Death trainee because of course it had to be someone from Death), of the dozen or so trainees present, over half were from Mist. They did not take kindly to the insult and put Pedro's earlier suggestions and tips to practical use.
The Mist Hunter would have normally allowed them to fight it out, get all their aggressions dealt with on the training field. But that was when he spotted something wrong with the dampers. They were normally capable of handling even full fledged Hunters, even Division leads. But recent Horsemen activities had sapped the runes and when they started crackling out, Pedro realized the danger this posed.
The trainee's FEAR shield had shattered at this point. And with a frown, Pedro threw himself into the fray to protect them, using his own FEAR to refill the trainee's at the cost of his own. Only one of the trainees proved to be a Horseman in diguise and used Pedro's loss of shield as an opportunity to kill the hunter.
Pedro never saw it coming.
