The mission had come as a bit of a surprise, but all the same, Nena was always willing to go where her superiors needed her. In this case, where they needed her was at the Sahara base. There had been a spike in horsemen activity, and having a few more hunter ranked bodies around would only help in the efforts to keep the base defended.
Vallie, of course, had been left back on the island. Nena was only supposed to be gone for a week, and Ollie had proven himself more than capable of babysitting her. She trusted him to take care of her, but that didn't mean being away from her for such an extended period would be easy. In fact, it would be the longest she'd had to be away from the little girl since she'd been placed in Nena's loving care.
By the next day she was terribly homesick.
Which...might have contributed a bit her not being one hundred percent focused as she patrolled the front perimeter of the base.
Or it could have been that the horseman that snuck past were simply that good. Good enough that Nena didn't hear the near silent slid of bare feet over sand as the scavenger crept up on her. He had to be strong, because it only took one unexpected attack to bring her down.
One moment she surveying the open desert beyond the gates, and the next...the point of a curved sickle was protruding from her chest, her own blood glittering in the moonlight. She coughed, the taste of copper on her lips, and barely had time to panic as the world began to tip sideways.
