[ JOB LISTING ] Tech Support
[ DIFFICULTY LEVEL ] gaia_star gaia_star gaia_star

[ TASK ]
As one of our clever ponies at the tech Stable, your job is to fix customer's technology and troubleshoot it while making as much money as possible, making sure to fit and maintain our monitoring implants and software in the process.

[ MECHANICS ]
Roll 1d6 twice, each roll is half the day.

  1. - The hardware you are brought is a complete mess, it's screen is cracked in a way you can't replace, it simply won't boot correctly or it has been in some sort of terrible sticky accident. All you can do is commemorate its memory and send the customer over to your colleague on the shop floor, losing your commission in the process.
  2. - The fix is easy, the customer isn't very tech savvy and had simply tripped a background setting without meaning to, you can fix it in five minutes but those five minutes cost them dearly.
  3. - Somehow this customer has managed to break the monitoring process on their device, taking them off of the collective data grid, this has in essence bricked their tech, they bring it to you, you easily reinstall the spyware and they are on their way.
  4. - Some piece of hardware needs replaced, it is easily done but you tell them it will take 24 hours and charge them incredible prices for the part they need.
  5. - The customer wants nothing more than to talk to you about the store, the products, the CEO and everything else and none of your social hints to go away seem to work on them, delaying you in your work for half the morning
  6. - The hardware is outdated but somehow you get it running again, Tyr stops by and offers the customer a discount on an upgrade to a more modern product which they take and end up spending a great deal more than they meant to that day on in-store financing.

Of all the jobs they could do, venturing out into the world, Jude thought this might be the one he was best suited to: sitting at a desk and working his way methodically through mindless repetitive tasks, following a script left at his desk to figure out what needed to be fixed and what needed to be sent on down the chain. It wasn’t even the first time he’d done tech support. At the office, while he hadn’t exactly been IT, he’d been of an age that meant he was competent with computers – and this competence meant that he was the first one his boss came to when something was wrong.

IT took too long. Jude was just sitting there. Why shouldn’t he come into the office and spend just a couple of minutes figuring out what was busted and making it work again?

So settling at the desk in Pale Horse, Jude blew out a sigh and looked at the customers waiting. The one thing he couldn’t manage was a smile, as the first person came up to his desk with a shiny new phone that, they said, wasn’t doing anything at all.

Jude politely took it, expression a bit blank. Blank enough that the person already was unsettled, unhappy with his lack of good cheer, and when he said that he couldn’t handle it here, they only got more annoyed.

“Twenty four hours? Are you for real? This phone is my life. I can’t go that long without --”

Maybe a smile would have made them more reasonable. Jude didn’t think it was worth the effort.

He cracked his neck as Customer Number One left, after much longer than he would have expected. It should have been a simple in-and-out, hand in your device and come back tomorrow, but the man had absolutely insisted on arguing with him for far too long instead. For just a moment he was left to his own devices: able to breathe, to drag fingers down his cheek, to check the time and refresh his coffee. Then someone new appeared in front of his station.

She was all bright smiles and laughing good cheer, wearing a low cut blouse that was certainly intended to drag eyes downward a bit. Jude, studiously, didn’t look. Instead he maintained that blank expression as she sidled up next to hm, not with a problem but just a bit of gossip.

“Is what I heard about the CEO true?” She asked, low and quiet and wicked, dropping heavy lashes over her eyes in a coy manner. The second the words spilled out of her lips Jude knew what he was in for. Inane garbage. It was up there with his least favorite things, alongside small talk and wet socks. He watched her blandly, deciding that not replying was his best option.

It didn’t work. She went on and on about every news story, every bit of gossip, every leak she’d heard about the company. Twenty minutes. An hour. He was worn out and more than ready to leave by the time she finished.
