The cafeteria was in decent shape, having been one of the priorities for repair because of its constant state of use. The food could have been better. But that was the normal state of things, and Kara's family had never been that great at cooking, either. She put a blob of macaroni and cheese on her plate, accompanied it with a scoop of mashed potatoes, picked a banana out of the bowl of fruit, and got a cup of fruit punch.
Then she picked out a table in the corner. An empty one, and out of the way, so that she could eat in peace.

That peace however had been short lived as a shadow cast over Kara's plate and suddenly a tray was set down beside hers. It was mostly empty except for an apple and a small carton of milk.
"Hello!" came the cheery voice of the tray's owner as she sat down next to Kara.
Lily beamed a bright smile at her, almost as bright as her skin.

There was a pause as Kara slowly peeled her banana, took a bite, chewed it, and swallowed it. Then she gave her new companion an unimpressed once-over. Then she looked at the other woman's tray. "Do you really think that's enough food?" she asked.

"Nope," Lily replied with a smile still on her face despite the pause. "But it's the only food worth eating that they have on offer. Me and my brother usually eat food from elsewhere... I just..." The smile contorted a little into a smirk. "... I felt peckish."
Kara shrugged and took a deliberately large bite of the macaroni and cheese, creating another pause in the conversation. "Food's just fuel," she said once she'd finished the bite. "Whatever works for you, I guess." She managed to put a good deal of doubt into the sentence.

"Fuel that needs to taste good," Lily replied rather bluntly, starting to look mildly annoyed by the pauses.
"But if you like the taste, then who am I to judge?"
This time she intentionally allowed a long pause to take shape before mumbling something that sounded suspiciously like 'garbage eater'.
"It's a bonus if it tastes good," Kara said, not caring if Lily was annoyed. Lily, after all, had decided to go out of her way to come over to the table where Kara was sitting and strike up a conversation without first checking as to whether she was welcome or not. "Otherwise, it just needs to have decent nutrition." The mumble was magnanimously ignored.

"You say that like that has any nutritional value either. Yellow dye number sixty-nine and flour with a bunch of chemicals for taste is probably all that is." She pointed to the remaining mac n cheese on Kara's plate.
"Carbohydrates and dairy, a necessary part of a high-calorie diet for people who are getting high levels of exercise." Kara eyed Lily's tray again. "Then again, maybe yours is adequate for your activity levels. Who knows."

"You really think they put actual dairy in that? You're dreaming." Lily said, not even bothering to address her own tray which in her mind was the healthiest snack available from the buffet on offer. Everything else was... meant to not expire or go bad in a nuclear holocaust. She's surprised honestly that there wasn't more twinkies.
"Recipe doesn't work without it, as you'd know if you cooked," Kara said, and gave Lily a very pleasant smile. Her own cooking skills extended to the instructions on the back of a box, but Lily didn't have to know that, and possibly was even worse at this than Kara was.

"Psh, this obviously isn't mac n cheese. It's fake glop so I doubt they used anything but water." Lily replied, see, she knew some stuff too.
