[ DEATH DIVISION EVALUATION: SCAVENGER HUNTING ]

The Death division is all about stealth, recon, espionage - the really cool stuff. Stuff you see in movies or games.
In order to prove your worth and demonstrate your superior powers of observation, your goal is to complete a Capture the Flag challenge and submit two hidden codes to Alek!

gaia_crown [ THE TRAINING COURSE ]

gaia_star [ PART 1 ] a mysterious box
A text message pops up on your phone with a set of coordinates, and nothing else. Roll 2d4 to determine the coordinates you get.

Almost as if your location is being tracked, once you reach the first set of coordinates, you receive a message with a second set of coordinates.

Alternatively, you can roll 4d4 to get both sets of coordinates at the same time!
    If you get the same square both times, you can choose to adjust either the X or Y coordinate by 1. ( eg. 4 - 2 could become 4 - 3 / 4 - 1 / 1 - 2 / 3 - 2 )

    +-------+-------+-------+-------+
    | 1 - 1 | 1 - 2 | 1 - 3 | 1 - 4 |
    | phone | pizza | watch | photo |
    +-------+-------+-------+-------+
    | 2 - 1 | 2 - 2 | 2 - 3 | 2 - 4 |
    | pizza | empty | knife | cards |
    +-------+-------+-------+-------+
    | 3 - 1 | 3 - 2 | 3 - 3 | 3 - 4 |
    | drive | cards | phone | empty |
    +-------+-------+-------+-------+
    | 4 - 1 | 4 - 2 | 4 - 3 | 4 - 4 |
    | photo | knife | drive | watch |
    +-------+-------+-------+-------+

On surveying the given location, you find a mysterious box. The contents of the box depend on the grid above.

  • Phone - A standard deus-issued phone. It appears to be locked.
  • Pizza - Mmmm. Pepperoni and cheese pizza. It once had the potential to be delicious, but is now only stale.
  • Watch - An old watch. The glass is cracked, but the watch is still ticking merrily away.
  • Photo - It doesn't look like anything. The person that took this photo was presumably not very good at taking photos.
  • Knife - A rusty knife with what looks like stains on it.
  • Cards - A deck of tarot cards.
  • Drive - Just your run of the mill runic flash drive.
  • Empty - There's some fluff at the bottom of the box, but nothing else. You grab the box anyway!

gaia_star [ PART 2 the investigation
Armed with your two items, you proceed to investigate them. Roll 2d4 to determine the final outcome of your analysis of each item!
If you roll double numbers ( eg. 2,2 / 3,3 etc) add 2 points to your score, up to a maximum of 10 points!

    Phone
[ 1 - FAIL ] You try to unlock the phone by tapping in random numbers. It beeps angrily at you and explodes in your hands.
[ 2 - OKAY ] The owner of the phone locates you using Find My hPhone. You manage to convince them you didn't steal it, and they leave you in one piece.
[ 3 - NICE ] After some careful investigation, you unlock the phone and look around. All the messages on the phone just look like gibberish! Except one. It's a.. 30% off discount code for a lawnmower: "Exclusive Wrench".
[ 4 - OMG! ] In addition to unlocking the phone, you find a suspicious encrypted file and manage to decrypt it. The flag is "Earthquake Cows". Go you!

    Pizza
[ 1 - FAIL ] You throw the pizza away. I mean.. who would eat that?
[ 2 - OKAY ] You give the pizza a sniff and.. you know, it seems like it might still be edible. People used to preserve food in the ground, right? You heat up the pizza and eat it. You finally understand the bitter taste of regret. Lesson learned!
[ 3 - NICE ] You inspect the pizza closely. Then you flip the pizza box over. There's a post-it note stuck to the bottom, that says "Squash Bike".
[ 4 - OMG! ] You notice a pattern in the pepperoni. Is it .. could it be .. a secret code? IT IS! The flag is "Spicy Grandmother".

    Watch
[ 1 - FAIL ] You swing the watch by its chain as you walk, but it slips off your hand and flies off into the distance. Good job, you.
[ 2 - OKAY ] You trade the watch to someone else for a bag of potato chips (or anything trivial of your choice). That.. that doesn't even.. well, I hope you're happy anyway.
[ 3 - NICE ] You check the watch over thoroughly and notice an inscription on the side: "Memorise Twist"
[ 4 - OMG! ] You crack the watch open and tip all the contents out. You arrange them in order of size, only to find that the letters scratched onto each cog spell out "Harsh Umbrella".

    Photo
[ 1 - FAIL ] You attempt to hold the photo over a small flame to look for any invisible words. Good idea.... but you end up accidentally burning the photo. Oops.
[ 2 - OKAY ] You frame the photo and hang it on your wall. This counts as abstract art, right?
[ 3 - NICE ] You place the photo under blacklight, and find the code "Acidic Wool" scrawled messily over it. Looks like there were invisible words after all!
[ 4 - OMG! ] Inspired by crime dramas on TV, you scan the picture in, and perform a series of zoom-ins and enhances. It pays off: you notice tiny text saying "Shrill Bulb".

    Knife
[ 1 - FAIL ] While inspecting the knife, you accidentally cut yourself.
[ 2 - OKAY ] You clean the knife up, but while you're polishing it...you break it. Guess you scrubbed too hard!
[ 3 - NICE ] You clean the knife up, polishing all the marks off it. When it's all clean and gleaming, you notice the words "Aggressive Calculator" along the edge of the blade.
[ 4 - OMG! ] You correctly guess that the knife - a kitchen knife - indicates you should search around the cafeteria for a clue. You follow a trail of fake ketchup bloodstains to the code "Lucky Violet" also written in ketchup.

    Cards
[ 1 - FAIL ] You don't notice anything special about them, so you decide to take them inside for a closer look. On your way, you drop them in a puddle.
[ 2 - OKAY ] You get extremely excited by the tarot cards, and learn to read them. This, unfortunately, doesn't actually help with the goal.
[ 3 - NICE ] On shuffling through the deck, you notice that some of the letters on the cards are coloured differently. Putting them together gets you the code "Riot Chess".
[ 4 - OMG! ] You notice that one particular card is more faded than the others. It's also slightly thicker. You peel it apart to find the words "Impartial Sweater".

    Drive
[ 1 - FAIL ] You plug the flash drive into a computer, and the computer bluescreens immediately. Nice.
[ 2 - OKAY ] You plug the flash drive into a computer, and browse through the files. Unfortunately, they're all encrypted.
[ 3 - NICE ] You plug the flash drive into a computer, and browse through the files, which you've decrypted. You find the code: "Sparkle Cheese".
[ 4 - OMG! ] You boot from the flash drive. A text-based game loads and you play through it. At the end, instead of GAME OVER, the words "Quick Crayon" are displayed on the screen.

    Empty
[ 1 - FAIL ] You throw the box out without a second thought. Apparently you have no spidey senses.
[ 2 - OKAY ] You correctly guess that the fluff is hint that you should check out minipets. Unfortunately, when you place the box down on the floor of the minipets area in the Life labs, a stray cannon cat decides to claim it. At least it's cute, right?
[ 3 - NICE ] You unfold the cardboard box. In a small corner, you find the words "Competition Wax".
[ 4 - OMG! ] You correctly guess that the fluff is a hint that you should check out minipets. On checking out the life labs, you notice a subtle sequence of clues that lead you to the code "Dusty Icicle" printed on a file.

SUM UP THE POINTS /10, that's their pay bonus (Which they can turn in for "currency" )

Ruth wanted to get this assessment over and done with. She had to go back and make sure the application was still up and running even after the flood. Though knowing how shitty and unreliable technology was even outside the island, she wasn't holding her breath. Her interpretation of the coordinates led her to a box containing a shitty, shitty photo. Blue eyes narrowed in disdain and judgement, whoever took this should never have been given a camera or allowed to have said photo printed out before her phone buzzed again with a second set of coordinates to go to.

The second set of coordinates led her to a box. An empty cardboard box. Ruth scowled but carefully inspected the box as best as she could for any possible secret compartments or anything of the sort. At best, she found some fluff at the bottom of the box, but there was nothing else inside. Once convinced, she grabbed the box because it was entirely possible the box itself was what she needed to get.

With the photograph kept inside the box, Ruth returned to analyze the two items for the phrases she had to deliver. She went with the easier item, which was the photograph. Since it was too blurry to be of any use, perhaps it was meant to cover up something underneath? Heat usually did wonders for exposing secret messages but the photograph was apparently exceptionally flammable and she ended up ruining it in the process.

The box was made of cardboard and the flaps suggested that it could be unfolded. In doing so, Ruth noticed that there were two words were in a small corner. But who cares what it was, she needed two phrases and she only had one.
