[ JOB LISTING ] Loan shark

[ DIFFICULTY LEVEL ] gaia_star gaia_star gaia_star

[ TASK ] It's time to call in some loans - aka the bank's most formidable and infamous task, what they're best known for. He's invited you to some interviews with people who are behind on their loan payments; the office is extremely grand and fancy - and also imposing. Doing this task means that Crane trusts you to know what you're doing, so you'd better not let him down...

[ MECHANICS ] Roll 1d100 and see how well you've fared. You may have two clients a day.

  • 01 - 15 - The person you've been instructed to speak to is a young parent who keeps crying everywhere. It's a little flustering to try and talk when someone is sobbing on your shoulder...needless to say, Crane is disappointed in your efforts. Or lack thereof. ( fail )

  • 16 - 30 - Twins. Why twins? What sort of twins take out a loan together? Apparently to open a small business. They're the type of twins who finish each other's sentences, which gets you both confused and a little annoyed. Crane doesn't appreciate your impatience...but he does seem to appreciate the creativity you use to handle the situation. ( pass )

  • 31 - 45 - Your patron is a young person - very young. In fact, so young that you're wondering how a person this young even got a loan. But it seems that appearances can be deceiving. You do well in getting them to admit that they need to pay the bank back. ( pass )

  • 46 - 60 - The customer is an elderly person who keeps trying to get you to speak louder and louder because they can't hear you. Crane seems amused by this, but doesn't intervene, even when the patron says that you remind them of their grandchild. They reminisce about stories of their childhood, and you get so involved in the storytelling that you almost forget you're doing work. ( pass )

  • 61 - 75 - Your patron is an attractive - very attractive - very very attractive - person who keeps flirting outrageously at you. Crane seems to find this quite normal, but it's throwing you off your game. Or maybe you're really good at flirting back. Either way, you actually do manage to convince them to make a payment. ( pass )

  • 76 - 90 - Your meet with someone who is unbelievably derogative and dismissive. No matter how levelheaded you might be, they eventually say something that gets under your skin, and you lose your temper. Crane seems a little entertained by this, but, well, you can't go around snapping at clients, after all. ( fail )

  • 91 - 100 - You meet with a high profile client who is as smooth as a shark and as cool as a cucumber. Nothing you say and do can ruffle them, but in spite of this, Crane seems both pleased and satisfied with your attempts at getting them to repay their outstanding debts. He gives you a nod of commendation. ( pass )

Deciding that this was her last job for the day, Tessa sat in her usual desk, surprised to find that there was already a young lady there who had a strange look on her face.

The moment Tessa opened her mouth to say something to the woman, the woman broke down into tears, explaining how she couldn't make ends meet that month, how her child was barely getting by with what little food they could afford, how she herself had to skip on meals and couldn't find another job to make ends meet...

Tessa had a rare moment of compassion as she sent the woman on her way, not even bothering to remind her about the loan that was due.

She pointedly ignored the look Crane gave her.

The second client was the complete opposite of her first, and they were unruffled when Tessa went on a tangent, trying to make up for her lack of forwardness with the last client.

She reminded them that they were weeks past due, pointing out the exact date that they needed to make the payment, as well as reminder calls to help the customer make the payment on time.

They didn't even bat an eyelid.

Frustrated but keeping her cool as well, Tessa slid forward a form for them to fill out, and they took it with ease before going on their way.

Rubbing her temples, she noticed a different look from Crane this time... a nod of respect.

Huh. Apparently she'd done good, somehow.
