It's a dungeon. Sometimes people call it the main building's basement, but it was planned as a dungeon hundreds of years ago and a dungeon it remains. The largest room is a round one that has a very high ceiling and beams of sunlight trickle through the ironwork that sits on top. There's a distinct...pit...feeling. As if maybe this was a place where unfortunates had been tossed down to lions and crocodiles, and possibly monsters of an otherworldly variety. That feeling, of course, would be correct.

Miss Nester liked it, of course. As much as she liked anything, which basically amounted to not hating it. She never sits down at these meetings, but rather stalks the perimeter, a gaunt figure gliding behind them; each Life Hunter in an uncomfortable wooden chair that circles the room, no desks or table in sight, simply them sitting there in what looks like a vaguely ominous game of duck duck goose.

"Tell me," says the woman, old and regal and cold. Miss Nester is an old woman, but she is not your mother, not your grandmother. She doesn't love you. There's no affection waiting upon a job well-done, just a faint hope of unspoken approval.

"Tell me, what have you done." A demand. An accusation.

LIFE DIVISION MEETING:

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Welcome to the Sun division meeting. This is where all characters start for week 2! All you need to do here is RP/fulfill the a reaction post of your character attending the meeting and then you can get started on all the prp/solo/orps for week 2. We also ask if characters can come back to fill the division assessment (or do it ASAP), seen on the second post, which grants bonus rewards as part of the MAIN STORYLINE. Sometimes Hunters want funding/approval for additional division related projects You can post requests for these in this thread and quote the GMs of this thread. For example: I'd like extra money to reform an abandoned base in the Arctic.

gaia_crown [ LIFE DIVISION GMS ]
gaia_star [ Miss Nester ] rped by Lizbot
gaia_star [ ?? ] + [??] rped by its me debz and nothing yet

gaia_crown [ DIVISION ASSESSMENT ] Each division also has a division assessment. This is part of your character's MAIN STORYLINE task for their Week 2 beginning. Simply do the task in this thread, and rp out as necessary. You can run prps/orps/solos outside of this thread too before OR after completing the assessment, definitely don't let it wall you from doing other things as well for your week 2 character!

gaia_crown [ Additional IC Info ]: This is a division meeting. For Life, it's a place to get approval and funding for projects, ask questions, share ideas. For this AU, it's also a place to fingerpoint and try to turn Miss Nester's attention onto other hunters. This is a chance for you to introduce your character to others and establish some world building to help you on your way for this part of the event.

gaia_crown [ DIVISION ROLES : It may be hard to understand what your character has to do

  • Trainee : sparring, grunt work primarily on the island, learning about enemies and Deus history, assisting in missions and int he labs in small roles, basic first aid (project proposals less likely to get much in the way of resources or funding)

  • Intermediate : helping in the infirmary, assisting in the labs, taking the first steps toward narrowing your areas of interest, small personal project (proposals are likely to get modest funding and resources)

  • Full : those focused on healing are expected to be working full time in the infirmary, those focused on runic sciences are expected to have decided on their path of interest and to be taking the necessary steps to achieve their goal, act as support in field work as a medic or a tech (proposals likely to get generous funds and resources, but are also expected to be very good proposals in turn that yield meaningful results)

  • Specialized : specialized and full are considered the same rank outside of the context of said specialization. Life specializations come in a wide range, but usually fall into one of these categories: runic experimentation and refinement; energy studies; healing. They can revolve around educating other hunters, leading teams, specific field scenarios, and whatever else you can come up with that makes sense as a part of Life Division's work (a large budget will enable many large projects, but results are your only lifeline to further funding)

(If you're having any issues or questions please post in the QNA or rp anything out and quote lizbot, or even ICly ask! )

The Life assistants are present too, of course, but if you're looking for one, you can't see the other. Uncanny, how that it is, but they've developed a knack for it over the years. Furthermore, it's not the easiest to tell which is which, unless they're speaking about their respective projects.

    Both are clad in black.

    Both are watching.

[ LIFE DIVISION EVALUATION: THE MINIPET GAUNTLET ]

Your goal is to feed and train a minipet until it is capable of passing a diagnostics test. They will be graded on how well they make it through the gauntlet.

You need to raise the very best. Good luck.

    gaia_crown [ THE TRAINING COURSE ]

    gaia_star [ PART 1 ] The Feeding

Before the evaluation, as the labs have a number of specialized candies available for your minipet. The minipet may or may not be receptive to the candy it ingests, however, which will either hinder or further its performance in the test. These are not minipets that you are personally familiar with, so you have had no time to learn its favorites!

It is possible that Imogen knows their preferences, but when she looks at you, it is always as if she is staring through space and time to witness some terrible event in your lifetime. Or maybe she's just a little lost in thought. And is always lost in the thought of something mildly tragic.

It is possible that Imogen is simply not acknowledging that you are here.

Select your candy by rolling 2d10. You may choose any minipet, but the minipet is given at random IC.

      Candies:
1-3: Orange candy. It is unsurprisingly shaped like a pumpkin.
4-5: Red candy. It seems like it's trying to ooze out of its wrapper.
6-7: Blue candy. It's pleasantly warm to the touch.
8-9: Yellow candy. It almost seems like it's glowing.
10: Black candy. It's probably just a bit of licorice or something...right?

      Results and Bonuses:
1-3: The minipet doesn't seem to like what you've given it, and might look a bit betrayed, but it soldiers on. (No modifier to your rolls.)
4-8: The minipet seems satisfied with its candy, and is encouraged nicely by the morsel of FEAR that you have fed to it. (Add or subtract 1 to any of your rolls.)
9-10: The minipet seems to love the candy, and looks about as happy as its species can. (Add or subtract 2 to any of your rolls.)

If you roll doubles, your minipet enjoys the candy so much that you may negate any roll to replace it with a GREAT SUCCESS.

      gaia_star [ PART 2 ] The Training

The greenhouse is vast: about the size of four house lots, give or take. It even has a second story for an observation deck, where one of the Life assistants, Isabelle, sits. Despite the cloying heat, she's dressed head to toe in black, with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses on to boot.

She waves a hand at the sign. Deposit minipet here, it says, directly over a chute that pipes up to the ceiling, much like a futuristic public transportation system. Select its training at the console. Complete each exercise by rolling 3d10. Match its dice result to each test.

The console itself has a video feed, camera controls, and a microphone, if you feel like shouting encouragements through it, instead of yelling halfway across the greenhouse itself.

Test #1: Strength - The minipet is launched into a clearing, with the exit blocked by a large block of wood. All the minipet has to do is push it; by doing so, the path to the next area will open up.
1-3: It tries and and it tries, but the minipet cannot push the wood. After time, a tech comes and moves it out of pity. FAIL
4-8: You manage to talk it into doing some pushing and some shoving. It takes a while. SUCCESS
9-10: That minipet is unnervingly strong. It shoves hard enough that the wood breaks, clearing the way. GREAT SUCCESS

Test #2: Dexterity - The next area is an obstacle course, constructed from living, moving vines. All the minipet has to do is stay on the vines and walk from the entrance to the exit... Easier said than done.
1-4: Wobbling and hopping and rolling about, the minipet manages to make it across. There were some close calls, but it listened to you. You think. SUCCESS
5-8: The minipet falls, getting stuck between the vines. They wrap around it, squeezing it like an overly affectionate child does to a toy. Its eyes slowly start to bulge. Maybe this is it. Maybe this IS THE END-- A tech comes and saves them just in time. Phew. FAIL
9-10: This is...This is the most surefooted minipet in all the land. It prances its way to victory, and even Isabelle offers a slow thumbs up. GREAT SUCCESS

Test #3: Common Sense - All your minipet has to do to pass is to not hurt itself. Unfortunately, food sits at the opposite side of the room of a great deal of actual physical danger.
1-3: It takes a few attempts for it to really understand, but eventually the pain sinks in and the minipet waits. SUCCESS
4-8: It takes one look at the danger, then at the camera, and then it sits. It knows better. GREAT SUCCESS
9-10: Your minipet has... perished. It really, really wanted that food. Well, hopefully it wasn't a favorite. FAIL

      gaia_star [ PART 3 ]

      The Test

As it turns out, the evaluation itself was simply measuring the success of your choices. Surprise! Isn't this a great pop quiz?

Tally up your total points from Part 1 and Part 2. If you score above 10 points, you can only claim 10 max!

        Fail: 0 Points
        Success: 3 Points
        Great Success: 5 Points

Despite how much she really didn't care for any room outside of the labs, this particular room still sent chills down Riley's spine. She sat in her wooden chair, fighting the urge to pull her legs in and hold them close to her body protectively, and waited for the meeting to begin in earnest.

Of course, each of them were supposed to prepare some sort of self-assessment, or at least Riley had convinced herself that this was the case. She had a stacked folder in front of her, filled with dozens of pictures of her experiments, along with detailed notes and analysis of the successes and the failures of her golem research. She'd been busy.

It helped that she almost never left the lab. She wore out a path from the lab to her office, where she still worked - and slept, when exhaustion finally pulled her down.

Her work had, at times, gone from perfect penmanship to barely lucid scrawls, but for the most part she kept her work in order. She slid it into the middle of the table for assessment and the hopes that funding would be granted for her to continue her research, and then got up to do her Evaluation.

    Character's name: Riley
Character's clan: Life Hunter, Specialization: Golem Research

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF MY CHARACTER: She's 6 foot even, thin, and a little on the nerdy side. Glasses, dark skin, thick purple-black dredlocked hair held up in a ponytail, and very introverted. She's always in the Life Labs, and has trouble talking to others. About anything. Ever.

    Part 1 Eval: Riley

The task was almost annoyingly simple. Choose a candy, feed a minipet, train your pet to follow a task successfully. Riley despised that she wasn't allowed to make the candy herself. She chose one that looked satisfying, a healthy blue color - and when feeding it to the pet that she'd been assigned, a sweet looking Harbinger. She made a mental note to ask about adopting the pet after they were done. It was just so cute.

    Part 2 Eval: Riley

"Here. Just. Just eat the candy. It's a good candy." Riley had changed her mind. She would not be adopting this pet, because it was stubborn as hell. Every time she tried to feed the pet the candy, it just sat there and stared at it like it was being offended. Riley had to put the candy in its mouth and actually push it past the tongue, before it finally accepted it and swallowed.

She placed it in the tube at the greenhouse, and told it to push. The Harbinger, as usual, simply sat and stared. Riley had to get in there and actually push it a little to get it to move at all, but the minipet eventually got through the block of wood, and found itself on the other side. Was this going to be the case with all of the obstacles?

No.. apparently not. Her Harbinger was a delicate, nimble little princess as it pranced down the vines to its destination, without Riley having to say a word. She grumbled something under her breath about wishing it had been that easy earlier. Perhaps the candy was finally starting to give it a better demeanor.

She looked to the monitor, and watched it go through its final test. Riley's heart does a little flop flop when she watches the Harbinger simply sit down and refuse to enter the dangerous zone. (Although, to be fair, sitting and not moving was probably its very favorite thing to do, according to observation.

    Part 3 Eval Claim: 10/10

When Riley returned the minipet to the Division meeting and put it back where she found it, she sat back down in her wooden chair and looked - perhaps - just a little too smug for someone who'd had to shove a piece of candy into a minipet's mouth.

Aisha entered quietly, hands shoved into her coat pockets and headphones on and blaring. The thump of bass could be heard even though they clamped firmly to her head, though as she entered the young woman slid them off and quietly turned the music down in a quick fade of noise.

She smiled at the only other woman present, an attempt to fight the discomfort of the pit of a room. The truth was that since joining Deus she'd felt a bit aimless in her role in Life Division. She hadn't chosen it, she'd instead been assigned, and Aisha was now surrounded by scientists and doctors and feeling a bit out of her depth.

The dark-skinned young woman sat very near to Riley in the large room, mostly because she wanted to lean and whisper, "I like your hair.."

She produced a notebook though it wasn't much. Being asked what she'd done had Aisha's eyes fell to the book where she'd neatly outlined all the duties and help she'd given the higher ranking experts of her division. She idly checked Dorothy but quickly looked away.

Being afraid of Miss Nester was rather healthy. Unfortunately Kithryn was not afraid of Miss Nester so much as she wanted to be her one day or, at least, wanted her menacing abilities. There was a lot to be said for having the ability to make a group of intelligent human beings quiver like children with nothing more than a look. At nineteen it was something that Kithryn had not even gotten a foot up on just yet.

She could have done without the gaunt, death-warmed-over look entirely though. That was something that Nester could keep to herself as loooong as she wanted.

As a trainee she didn't have much to report. Didn't have much to say. All she could do was yearn that one day she would have a notebook as thick as her thigh with colored tabs, neatly-composed charts, and a PowerPoint presentation that would dazzle everyone in the division.

Kithryn had always had big dreams.

It honestly looked like there might be a hairy moment during the Dexterity test but, of course, her application of the candy was impeccable! Testing was her shining glory, after all, so why would she not succeed this test with flying colors? Honestly, she ought to have been promoted to Intermediate by now.

Perhaps Miss Nester would finally notice her success? Perhaps she would be praised for this wonderful job?

Aisha rose quietly to take a minipet for evaluation. She was simply handed one, something small with antlers and some sort of feathery or leafy hair.. or ruff.. she wasn't really sure. The hunter glanced at Imogen and thought to ask for help but the look in her eyes was unnerving enough to turn her away.

"Let's get you something.." Aisha murmured to the mini, giving it's head a scratch before she selected the coolest, glowing looking candy.

The mini seemed to love it, thankfully, and she let out a breath of relief to find she hadn't bunked it up totally.

Aisha apologizes to her minipet before dropping it into the tube. Why did the assistants have to be so weird?

"Sorry little guy.. girl.. thing.." The fawn licked her finger and she smiled before dropping it to be launched. She settled back, finding this out of her hands really. Was she being judged on what the minipet did? What if it decided to go to sleep?

Fortunately her fawn was rather pissed to have been launched from a tube and with a charge it plowed straight through the obstacle and cracked it in half. Aisha actually laughed a bit, hiding her smile in her scarf as it continued on.

The next area, the vines, seemed nearly too easy. Perhaps it was elementally aligned with the plants? It was green, and the way it's deer feet moved through the obstacles was really amazing (and adorable).

The next room was a concern and a temptation but the offer of food didn't seem to sway the fawn. It plopped on it's behind and sat.

The fawn was victorious, and Aisha equally so it seemed as she was given a congratulation and it looked like a bonus in pay. Sweet!

Lily arrived and it was with great frustration for the whole... meeting... concept in general. She just wanted to get out of here and run around. So much to do. That hurricane left a huge mess of things and someone needed to start cleaning up.

Plus, she really wanted to just ditch to harass her brother and see what his meeting was all about.

But she went from slouching to sitting as straight as a board in her uncomfortable wooden seat as Miss Nester drew near, furthermore when she spoke. She was terrified and struggled to find the words, mumbling a jumble of words that seemed to simply amount to, "rapid healing on the front lines". But that wasn't her exact word choice, a bunch of hums and haws interwoven with related words such as "heal", "good", and "fast".

She decided to take this moment and run over to get her evaluation done and over with.
