[ JOB LISTING ] Loan shark

[ DIFFICULTY LEVEL ] gaia_star gaia_star gaia_star

[ TASK ] It's time to call in some loans - aka the bank's most formidable and infamous task, what they're best known for. He's invited you to some interviews with people who are behind on their loan payments; the office is extremely grand and fancy - and also imposing. Doing this task means that Crane trusts you to know what you're doing, so you'd better not let him down...

[ MECHANICS ] Roll 1d100 and see how well you've fared. You may have two clients a day.

  • 01 - 15 - The person you've been instructed to speak to is a young parent who keeps crying everywhere. It's a little flustering to try and talk when someone is sobbing on your shoulder...needless to say, Crane is disappointed in your efforts. Or lack thereof. ( fail )

  • 16 - 30 - Twins. Why twins? What sort of twins take out a loan together? Apparently to open a small business. They're the type of twins who finish each other's sentences, which gets you both confused and a little annoyed. Crane doesn't appreciate your impatience...but he does seem to appreciate the creativity you use to handle the situation. ( pass )

  • 31 - 45 - Your patron is a young person - very young. In fact, so young that you're wondering how a person this young even got a loan. But it seems that appearances can be deceiving. You do well in getting them to admit that they need to pay the bank back. ( pass )

  • 46 - 60 - The customer is an elderly person who keeps trying to get you to speak louder and louder because they can't hear you. Crane seems amused by this, but doesn't intervene, even when the patron says that you remind them of their grandchild. They reminisce about stories of their childhood, and you get so involved in the storytelling that you almost forget you're doing work. ( pass )

  • 61 - 75 - Your patron is an attractive - very attractive - very very attractive - person who keeps flirting outrageously at you. Crane seems to find this quite normal, but it's throwing you off your game. Or maybe you're really good at flirting back. Either way, you actually do manage to convince them to make a payment. ( pass )

  • 76 - 90 - Your meet with someone who is unbelievably derogative and dismissive. No matter how levelheaded you might be, they eventually say something that gets under your skin, and you lose your temper. Crane seems a little entertained by this, but, well, you can't go around snapping at clients, after all. ( fail )

  • 91 - 100 - You meet with a high profile client who is as smooth as a shark and as cool as a cucumber. Nothing you say and do can ruffle them, but in spite of this, Crane seems both pleased and satisfied with your attempts at getting them to repay their outstanding debts. He gives you a nod of commendation. ( pass )

While he was not exactly a ... people ... person, or whatever one might call themselves when they were really a horseman talking to some strange humans, Za'riah figured that getting people to pay back their debts shouldn't have been that hard. Just give a few well-placed threats, and they'd have their money and the clients could be on their way.

He likely should have expected this job would be much harder than it sounded when Crane had placed him there because it required a certain level of trust. A little harder would have been fine, though.

What he wasn't expecting were these twins.

"You are actually aware you both are late on your loan payments?"

"Yes we-"

"-are sir!"

Za'riah's eye twitched. Why did they insist on incessantly ending each other's sentences? There was no point to any of --

"But our business -"

"- it's struggling, sir! We need more -"

"- time! Time is money, and we'll -"

"- sure get you plenty of money in time!"

Was Crane glaring at him? Za'riah glanced over his shoulder towards where Crane was located. He wasn't exactly sure what that stern expression meant, personally, considering Crane never seemed particularly emotive, but he knew it was likely not a good sign.

"Businesses are never profitable immediately. That doesn't matter. You still have obligations to keep--"

"We are keeping our obligations!"

"It is just taking us a bit of time, si--"

"One at a time, please," snapped Za'riah, impatiently, attempting to keep himself from saying something a bit more uncouth.

"Sorry," they both chimed, before the one continued, "I promise, we'll have the money to you soon."

"Or," said Za'riah, tilting his head, "you can make a minimum payment due soon, and I won't have to go to your creditors and tell them you don't make payments. How hard would it be to gain more loans if your business continues to sink then?"

His voice seemed just smooth and vaguely threatening enough to produce a check for the money owed.
