The smell of the place is what finally drew him back to it; somewhere between clinical and rotten, the jars on Zyk's shelves each giving off their own strange scent. He remembered the pile of cushions in its center -- knew that if he took off his shoes at the door, it'd be easier for him to feel the ground beneath his feet and pad his way slowly around the room.

He also knew that a horseman who felt in so many ways like Zeke would likely find his way into these quarters as well. Instead of being reassured by this thought, it made Ever's hackles go up. Shoulders tense, he tried to keep his footsteps to whispers against the ground, his breath filling the air and giving him some sense of the space.

He found his way to Zyk's collection, and raised a hand to the shelf, to brush fingers against glass bottles that clicked and clattered together in response. Somewhere in this mess was the prize he needed. Without the return of his gift (a thought which made the shudder go down his spine again) he'd never find the cage, or the way out of here.

It wasn't empty when Ever arrived, but to anyone not already accustomed to having their sight removed, it wasn't immediately obvious. Zyk--or was it Zeke?--wasn't making much noise at all. He wasn't even in the main room, but back further within their shared quarters, just beyond the work bench he'd been standing at when the memories, or the dream, had hit him.

Tucked back as far into a corner as his tall body would allow, the man was sitting hunched over drawn up knees, arms drawn up so dark hands rested at the back of his head. He was barefoot, upper body naked save for the jewelry he always wore, and a plethora of deep scratches littering his arms, chest, and shoulders. The deepest of the cuts slowly oozing blood, filling the room with that coppery scent.

He was shaking slightly, chest rising and falling in careful, controlled breaths.

Frantic fingers caught the edge of a bottle and, unthinkingly, hooked in. It wasn't intentional, exactly, but when Ever jerked his hand back again, the container came with it. It hit the ground with a clatter and a crash, smashing open and spilling the contents out across Zyk's floor. Water poured across Ever's toes and he jumped back, knocking something else down as he did. It added to the spill, dumping it down into a couple of the pillows at the edge of their bed.

Frustrated and furious and more than a little afraid, Ever cursed creatively. He rubbed at his face and then froze, going very still, when he felt the scar tissue under the glasses.

"Son of a b***h." He shoved the glasses up his nose, and set to the bottles in earnest; dipping his fingers into them to feel out the contents, trying not to shudder at the sensation. He was looking for one thing, and he could ignore the rest.

The shattering glass resulted in a startled little scream followed almost immediately by the thump of something hard hitting a wall. Had he been less on the verge of hysteria, there would likely have been a string of curses, but that was simply beyond his current limitations. However, he was able to roll forward onto his knees to creep towards the open archway that lead to the heart of the quarters.

It shouldn't have been surprising to see Ever there, he lived there as well, or so the conflicting array or memories had shown, but that Ever, and the one currently searching through the rows of specimen jars on the shelves, seemed...different. Familiar, incredibly familiar, but just, different.

Fingertips digging at the walls, he dragged himself back to his feet. "What are you doing?" And it wasn't the easy, carefree confidence of the famine alchemist, nor the hunter, but something cracking around the edges, hoarse from overuse.

This time it was Ever who jumped -- startled by the sudden presence of someone else behind him. He'd been too caught up in Not Thinking About what his fingers found in the bottles that he hadn't heard the approaching footsteps, and that was alarming. If he couldn't see, he at least wanted to hear what was around him.

"Not a word out of you." He sounded curt, frustrated, shaking his head sharply. But then he hesitated just a little, like he was rethinking the sharp tone.

"Unless you can put my eyes back." And it still had the bite, but behind it was a tremble.

The sharpness in Ever's tone was enough to startle Zeke partially out of his internal panic. He blinked, brows creasing over his nose as he gave the other man a puzzled look, that only grew more confused by what followed.

"Put your..." The confusion was washed away by a fresh wave of horror as the dueling memories suddenly provided answers to his unspoken questions. He paled, even swayed a bit on his feet before leaning more heavily against the archway he was still standing in. "Jesus Christ." It came out in a rush, all the air leaving him all at once, and he didn't put up much of a fight to stay upright when his head started to swim.

He felt nauseous.

"This ******** up." Which was a terrible understatement. "So ******** up." The hysteria was creeping back.

His skin itched along one arm, tickling, and he jerked it to the side, sending the beetle smacking into the fall wall with a another fractured little keen.

"No s**t." The bite behind it was shaking out of him, though -- Ever's breath gone shuddering as he pulled layers upon layers of clothing in tighter around himself. At least here was some comfort. He could have sworn he was wearing a hunter coat. Had he been able to see it, he would have known from the lack of gold trim, from the clinical white, that it was just a faded lab coat, taken from one of his jobs in the human world --

No. That wasn't real. He turned back toward the shelf, fingertips brushing over the bottles. "I can't...I can't work like this. I can't go hunting for some kind of solution..."

He needed his eyes back.

Dark nails ad bite a few new angry scratches in his arm, and his breathing had gone ragged again. Everything was wrong.

He wasn't exactly a good person, he knew that, but at his worst he had never before come even remotely close to the sorts of things that were circling through his head. And never, never would he have ever done anything Ever. This was well beyond a bit of rough slap and tickle, this was psychopathy at it's most deranged.

He was shaking again, but he looked back up at the tone of Ever's voice. Got to his feet again through sheer determination. "Ever, stop." He didn't quite recognize the sound of his own voice anymore.

He'd always been the kind of person who bounced back very quickly, who shrugged off problems and injuries with a carefree edge. Impossible to tell if that was really Ever's core, or if it was just some part of him that didn't want to worry the people around him. Right now that careful calm, the indifference toward the world's ills, was decaying around him to leave Ever a shaky mess. He didn't stop; he wasn't the horseman who easily and thoughtlessly obeyed Zyk's instructions to let him take the helm.

"I want them back. I don't care how pretty you think they look on your shelf." Whatever was in this bottle seemed to reach back toward him; seemed to clutch at the probing fingers. Ever didn't just drop it but threw it on the floor. Smashing it was his intent, this time, and maybe it was meant as a biting insult to the horseman he assumed was complaining behind him.

The shattering glass was starting to make him feel just a tiny bit better.

Everything was moving just a little too quickly, and not at all in any sort of direction that made sense. It left Zeke feeling uncomfortably helpless in the situation, but sense he was in the middle of his own existential crisis, that was really the least of his worries.

Ironically, a bit of good came from Ever's mounting anxiety, and that was Zeke's natural drive to defuse whatever was going on to cause it. It slowed the trembling in his own arms, helped him back to his feet, and propelled him across the room, just in time to jerk a foot back from the shattering jar Ever smashed against the floor.

"Ever stop, you're going to cut your feet." He reached for him, curling fingers into the loose fabric of the lab coat to keep the other man from jerking away from effectively. He still didn't sound normal, still hoarse and on the edge, but it was better. "I don't care about whatever the ******** is in those things, just stop. I'll help you."

Instead of jerking away, Ever half-turned as Zyk got too close, twisted -- and grabbed him by the wrist, sudden and hard. It was a firm reminder that here, as in their world, he was stronger than the other man. Fingers were like iron around Zyk's wrist, holding it away from his skin as Ever drew in several deep breaths.

He had to force himself to let go, slowly, meaningfully shoving the hand away as he did. "Help, then. Grab the right jar for me."

Zeke's immediate reaction to having his wrist grabbed was to try to jerk it free, but here, as with in their normal lives, Ever had the upper hand. No matter how much they pretended otherwise. He had to force himself not to pull against that too-tight grip, to wait for the other man to decide what he was going to do, but he couldn't relax his arm either.

When ever let go, slowly, and shoved the hand away, it took more control than he wanted to admit to keep from rubbing where long fingers had held him.

The request, initially, was met with silence. Zeke didn't know what good would come of finding...what Ever was looking for, but with the way the blonde was behaving, he didn't think that logic would be well received--that he himself was actually thinking this clearly was a miracle in itself, after the break down he'd had before the other man had come in to search the shelves.

So, drawing in a careful breath and holding it, Zeke did what Ever wanted. He found the jar--paling once again--and reached out to lay the tips of his fingers against Ever's arm. "J'essaie de vous aider ici." He'd wait for A ahnd to come up to claim the jar before pressing it against his palm.

The touch of fingers against his skin made Ever go very still -- or maybe it was the French. When he reached out for the jar, his motions were mechanical, jerky; he tucked it into the crook of his arm and definitely didn't dip fingers into the top of the jar.

He hadn't thought this far ahead. With the prize in his grasp, he didn't know what to do with it; kind of wished Zyk had said it was gone. He licked his lips once, briefly, uncertainly.

Didn't know what to say, either. So he just breathed out a long, shaky breath.

Zeke released a slow, almost relieved breath when Ever didn't jerk away from him. The jerky, mechanical movements weren't a great deal better, but the loose curl of his fingers around that pale arm was something, at least. For himself, as well. Taking comfort as well as giving. Well, that was the intent.

"Faites un souffle." His free hand came up, touch light against Ever's other arm. He wanted to get him away from all the broken glass before he cut up the bottom of his feet.

"I'm...confused." It came out slow, and a little bit lost -- but if Zyk wanted to pull him away from the glass, Ever wouldn't fight him right now, at least. He also wouldn't move with the same easy grace he had as a horseman. Instead his movements were slightly exaggerated, like he wasn't sure where to put his feet, like he was afraid he might lose his balance.

He clutched the jar in both hands like a lifeline. Little good that it did him, when push came to shove...

"I don't understand." This time he sounded more sure, at least. Absolutely certain that he had no idea what was going on. "This isn't real."
