They'd pored over job listings for hours, Reine discarding ad after ad while complaining about crappy pay-to-effort ratios, Tria trying to point out all the potentially interesting parts of each of those ads.

In the end, the death priestess had thrown her hands up and let her jeweler friend pick. The result of that, quite unsurprisingly, was that they'd ended up at an art and antiques store. A very fancy, expensive-looking art and antiques store, in fact. Standing outside the door to the building, waiting for Tria to show up, Reine couldn't help but feel just a tad... well - not under-dressed, but not terribly appropriately dressed, either. At least, she mused, they were applying for a job that wasn't likely to require interacting with any fancy schmancy snotty snobby customers.

blech.

[ JOB LISTING ] Restoration Apprentice
[ DIFFICULTY LEVEL ] gaia_star gaia_star
[ TASK ] You seem competent enough that Adelaide is willing to trust you with some of the more delicate work that goes on in the shop. Namely the handling of some goods she's gotten her hands on. It's either dirty or broken and needs a quick fix and a small polish. "You'll be in the basement today, follow me." Roll 1d10 to find out which object you get to work with.

If you roll 1-3
Adelaide hands you a small wooden crate. Inside are several delicately wrapped pottery pieces. "They're Greek. They're old. Be careful with them." Your job is simple. Re-assemble an urn using some special adhesive made for such things.

First Step: Separate the pieces. Roll 5 d6. You will have to do this at least twice. You are looking to get a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 - in any order. You just need one of each. Once you have all six, you have your pieces!

Second Step: Simply RP matching them up/gluing them together. (this can be done in the same post as your last piece roll)

If you roll 4-7
You are given a painting to clean. Adelaide hands you a box of q-tips, a bottle of water, and a few very fine and soft towels. "It's a spit shine we are going for. Yes, spit." She gestures at the painting. "It's one of the very best things for cleaning old oil paintings like this one. Wet the q-tip, use it till it's dirty, then get a new one." She points at a table with a stool. "Get started." Roll 1 d20 to see what Adelaide thinks of your work. RP accordingly.

If your roll was 1-10:
--You work on the painting for no more than 5 minutes before Adelaide interrupts you. "You are pushing too hard. It's a light touch. Feather light." She watches you to make sure you get it right.
-----Look at the 1 d20 roll again. (no need to reroll)
-------If even she nods. "Yes. Just like that," she says with a smile. "Excellent work." You get to spend the next few hours painstakingly cleaning the painting.
-------If odd she shakes her head and sighs. "No. Lightly. Just," she puts her hand over her face and inhales. "Just go over there and watch how Remus is doing it." You get to spend the rest of the day observing.

If your roll was 11-20:
--Adelaide watches you work for a few minutes before nodding and walking away. It seems she trusts you to complete the task - so you spend the next couple of hours on it.
-----Look at the 1 d20 roll again. (no need to reroll)
-------If even after two hours, just as you are about half way done with the painting, Adelaide returns. "Yes, you are doing very well, indeed." She smiles warmly, and then sets down a second painting, even larger than the first. "I expect this one to be done after you complete the first." She nods and walks away.
-------If odd after two hours, Adelaide returns and leans over your work. "Oh dear. Oh no." She looks at you and her eyes are cold. "It's not bad, but it's not good enough. Start again. The colors should be vibrant and bright after you've gone over them." She leaves you alone with your work.

If your roll was 8-10

"Here," Adelaide says, leading you to a quiet corner with a table and some cleaning supplies. "I need you to take care of what's in the box."

Roll 1 d100 and look inside the box:

If your roll ends in 0 or 5

---The box holds several knives, all covered in blood. "They need cleaned, I expect a like-new shine. They are old, so be gentle with them." She glances at the box them back at you. "I expect discretion. We do not worry about what clients do outside of our store." She gives you a dangerous smile and walks away.
----If the roll ended in 0, you cut yourself at least once. (If it ended in 5 the cut is up to you.)

If your roll ends in 2, 4, 6, or 8

---The box holds a large amount of gold and silver coins. They are tarnished and covered in much and water deposits. "We are cleaning them for a client who found them off the coast." She doesn't say which coast. "They are indeed pirate gold. I expect them to be cleaned and as polished as you can make them." She nods once, then walks away.

---When you are finished, Adelaide inspects your work.
-----If your roll ended in 2 or 4: "Good work. Now, empty your pockets. All of them." She winks at you. "It's company policy."
-----If your roll ended in 6 or 8: "Could be better. I'll have Harv give them another once over." She glances at you. "Now empty your pockets. Company policy."
(No, you can't steal the coins.)

If your roll ended in 1, 3, 7, or 9

--The box is full of kittens. "These were found in the alley out back last week. We've still had no sign of the mother, and I have to be out of the office all day. You are on kitten sitting duty." Adelaide hands you some kitten food and some small dishes. "Don't panic, they are old enough for kitten food, no bottle feeding unless you really want to. Don't let them out of your sight." She leaves you alone with 5 kittens.

No extra dice rolling, just RP your character babysitting 5 kittens in the corner of a basement. gaia_kittenstar

"Oh my god!" Tria exclaimed, "I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY HAVE AN ORIGINAL UNDINE HERE" Her hands fluttered reverently around, as if she were trying very VERY hard to hold herself back from touching a particularly ornate hair comb. "Just look at it! Unnnghhh the detailwork", she wailed.

She keeps her back to Reine, fussing over the comb loudly and excessively, before whipping back to her friend, holding up a photo of the comb to her hair "HOW DO I LOOK!" She posed. She looked just a tad ridiculous.

Tria's excitement over the prospect of the comb completely overshadowed her interest in this ... urn fixing business.

Ugh, Tria was such a nerd.

"You look dumb, can we like, just, focus on the job?"

Reine turned away, her mouth quirking up into a little smile. She'd never admit it, but there was something nice about the way her friend seemed to get so excited about things.

Either way, it was time to get started. Adelaide had directed them into the basement, and assigned them different tasks; hers, apparently, involved cleaning.

Tria only laughed; Reine was a bit of a sourpuss, but only on the outside. Some day, Tria promised herself, someday she'd get to see her good friend lose her composure and laugh til her sides hurt. Maybe peed a little. But Tria isn't the kind of person to wish dirty undergarments on her friends, so... Maybe some tears, instead.

She puts the phone down, and starts gathering up the urn shards, starting to separate them out by color. Why on earth.... How did she get so many duplicate shards? Maybe there was a repeating pattern of sorts, which would fit what Tria knew about greek pottery.

"So what's Adelaide got you doing, Reine? Got anything cool over there?" Tria waggled her eyebrows.

"Uh, yeah, like, my composure," the younger girl deadpanned.

With a wry look on her face, she pried open the lid of the box --- only to find it full of coins. Dull, tarnished, gross, kind of - was that barnacles? It looked like barnacles.

So maybe behind every treasure chest in every movie, there was a sucker (spoiler: her) polishing every single one of them. Or, you know, CGI.

"It's just dumb coins," Reine complained, pointedly pulling gloves on before she took the first one out of the box. "At least you get a puzzle to put together."

"COINS?" The excitement in Tria's voice contrary to her actions. She peeked over Reine's shoulder, hands still focused on gently sorting the pieces of her urn. "You know coins are history, yea? They show what an age stands for, what they represent, and the faces on them show who they hold in reverence, or just who commissioned them. Every coin has a story!"

Tria pointed at a barnacle. "Just look at that! I wonder how long it's been underwater, and how it got there. And how someone found it ---" She grinned before returning to her urn. "Maybe you're touching the cursed coins of Davy Jones' locker. And if you touch them with your bare hands --" she eyes the gloves Reine's wearing (wow so responsible!) --"You'll be doomed to yearn for the sea with every beat of your heart. One day," Tria pauses dramatically, the clink and clatter of urn pieces low in the background, "you'll throw yourself into the ocean, finally one with its ebbs and flows~"

With a flourish, Tria glues the last piece of her urn back together. "TA DA! That was fast. Good thing I've got so much practice with fixing jewelry." She snaps on another pair of gloves, and reaches over to the coin collection. "Maybe you could use some help?"

"It probably just washed up ashore somewhere."

Holy s**t, Tria never stopped. It was a testament to their friendship that Reine let her, in fact, if interrogated under pressure and threat of torture, she might consider admitting she almost enjoyed the constant stream of chatter as the two of them worked.

The pile of scrubbed, gleaming coins grew as she watched the urn begin to take shape under Tria's skilled hands. It was almost mesmerising - there was always something meaningful, she supposed, in being able to create instead of just destroy.

Her eyes snapped back to her own task as Tria glued the last piece on.

"You can help if you really want to," Reine muttered, suddenly all too aware of all the ornate detailing on the coin in her hands.
PostPosted: Sat Jun 10, 2017 7:21 pm

"I DO WANT-" Tria snatched up coin after coin, not even bothering to hide the fact that she wasn't cleaning them, just staring at the faces and images engraved on their surfaces. "And washing ashore? Really? Anything with this many deposits on it can't possibly 'wash ashore', it would take years to accumulate to this degree!" Tria is tempted to spit on one of them, see if the old adage "spit shining" actually works.

Ah well. They were about as done as they were going to get. Tria gathered up her scawl. "Time to head out, eh?"
