[ JOB LISTING ] Restoration Apprentice
[ DIFFICULTY LEVEL ] gaia_star gaia_star
[ TASK ] You seem competent enough that Adelaide is willing to trust you with some of the more delicate work that goes on in the shop. Namely the handling of some goods she's gotten her hands on. It's either dirty or broken and needs a quick fix and a small polish. "You'll be in the basement today, follow me." Roll 1d10 to find out which object you get to work with.

If you roll 1-3
Adelaide hands you a small wooden crate. Inside are several delicately wrapped pottery pieces. "They're Greek. They're old. Be careful with them." Your job is simple. Re-assemble an urn using some special adhesive made for such things.

First Step: Separate the pieces. Roll 5 d6. You will have to do this at least twice. You are looking to get a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 - in any order. You just need one of each. Once you have all six, you have your pieces!

Second Step: Simply RP matching them up/gluing them together. (this can be done in the same post as your last piece roll)

If you roll 4-7
You are given a painting to clean. Adelaide hands you a box of q-tips, a bottle of water, and a few very fine and soft towels. "It's a spit shine we are going for. Yes, spit." She gestures at the painting. "It's one of the very best things for cleaning old oil paintings like this one. Wet the q-tip, use it till it's dirty, then get a new one." She points at a table with a stool. "Get started." Roll 1 d20 to see what Adelaide thinks of your work. RP accordingly.

If your roll was 1-10:
--You work on the painting for no more than 5 minutes before Adelaide interrupts you. "You are pushing too hard. It's a light touch. Feather light." She watches you to make sure you get it right.
-----Look at the 1 d20 roll again. (no need to reroll)
-------If even she nods. "Yes. Just like that," she says with a smile. "Excellent work." You get to spend the next few hours painstakingly cleaning the painting.
-------If odd she shakes her head and sighs. "No. Lightly. Just," she puts her hand over her face and inhales. "Just go over there and watch how Remus is doing it." You get to spend the rest of the day observing.

If your roll was 11-20:
--Adelaide watches you work for a few minutes before nodding and walking away. It seems she trusts you to complete the task - so you spend the next couple of hours on it.
-----Look at the 1 d20 roll again. (no need to reroll)
-------If even after two hours, just as you are about half way done with the painting, Adelaide returns. "Yes, you are doing very well, indeed." She smiles warmly, and then sets down a second painting, even larger than the first. "I expect this one to be done after you complete the first." She nods and walks away.
-------If odd after two hours, Adelaide returns and leans over your work. "Oh dear. Oh no." She looks at you and her eyes are cold. "It's not bad, but it's not good enough. Start again. The colors should be vibrant and bright after you've gone over them." She leaves you alone with your work.

If your roll was 8-10

"Here," Adelaide says, leading you to a quiet corner with a table and some cleaning supplies. "I need you to take care of what's in the box."

Roll 1 d100 and look inside the box:

If your roll ends in 0 or 5

---The box holds several knives, all covered in blood. "They need cleaned, I expect a like-new shine. They are old, so be gentle with them." She glances at the box them back at you. "I expect discretion. We do not worry about what clients do outside of our store." She gives you a dangerous smile and walks away.
----If the roll ended in 0, you cut yourself at least once. (If it ended in 5 the cut is up to you.)

If your roll ends in 2, 4, 6, or 8

---The box holds a large amount of gold and silver coins. They are tarnished and covered in much and water deposits. "We are cleaning them for a client who found them off the coast." She doesn't say which coast. "They are indeed pirate gold. I expect them to be cleaned and as polished as you can make them." She nods once, then walks away.

---When you are finished, Adelaide inspects your work.
-----If your roll ended in 2 or 4: "Good work. Now, empty your pockets. All of them." She winks at you. "It's company policy."
-----If your roll ended in 6 or 8: "Could be better. I'll have Harv give them another once over." She glances at you. "Now empty your pockets. Company policy."
(No, you can't steal the coins.)

If your roll ended in 1, 3, 7, or 9

--The box is full of kittens. "These were found in the alley out back last week. We've still had no sign of the mother, and I have to be out of the office all day. You are on kitten sitting duty." Adelaide hands you some kitten food and some small dishes. "Don't panic, they are old enough for kitten food, no bottle feeding unless you really want to. Don't let them out of your sight." She leaves you alone with 5 kittens.

No extra dice rolling, just RP your character babysitting 5 kittens in the corner of a basement. gaia_kittenstar

It took Issos a bit of time to actually get everything in order - but putting together all of the pieces was actually a little cathartic; just like making jewelry, as a matter of fact. Perhaps not as delicate or as rewarding - at least in Issos' mind, but he found he rather liked doing this sort of thing as a side task. It wasn't time consuming, vapid, or mundane; some of the pieces were quite small and not all of them fit perfectly well, but there was a beautiful sort of logic in being able to get them all together once and for all.

It was also easy to get lost in this sort of work. Issos' back began to hurt after the first hour from his hunched over position, his eyes completely focused on the matter at hand, his gaze narrowed in concentration. His face was so close to the actual pottery that if he was any closer, he would have had it pressed against the ceramic surface and possibly becoming a permanent part of it, seeing as how he was gluing things into place.

Issos carefully leaned a little further away, just so his nose wouldn't suddenly brush the gluey surface and get stuck there, a wince passing across his pale face at the thought. He sorted through some of the other broken pieces until he found one that looked promising, and promptly pressed it gently against the side of another.

It didn't quite fit. Issos made a noise of exasperation, set the first piece down, and then went searching for a second. It took him three more tries to find one that nestled perfectly against the one he was trying to match it to; a thin line of glue was drawn across the roughened edges, and then Issos pressed them carefully together.

The fun part was the waiting - and by fun, Issos meant dull, because he had to sit there, holding the two pieces of pottery together while the glue set, unable to do anything else. He was used to this sort of thing while he was making his jewelry, but for some reason it seemed more tedious here.

Other than that, however, he had a surprisingly good time.

The last time that Issos had visited the antique store of one Adelaide, he'd spent several very enjoyable hours simply putting the pieces of a vase back together; sort of like a large, three dimensional puzzle that was also made of ceramic and clay and, when put together, made something that was actually useful instead of something that was just hung up on the wall to be admired (not that Issos really minded that sort of thing, either, considering how much art he did on a daily basis). But in spite of it being tiring and a little bit tedious, overall he'd had quite a good time. It had taken more of his day than he'd predicted, but still; it could have been worse.

He could have been staring at a screen like that one job he'd already vowed not to go back to.

The box that Adelaide handed to Issos this time was moving, which confused him. He squinted down into the depths of it and found several pairs of curious eyes staring back up at him, just as confused, quite a bit smaller than himself and -

Meowing. The box was meowing.

Kittens.

Issos felt his heart expand approximately three sizes. He wasn't ever really good at this sort of thing, especially since he was not exactly the most vibrantly emotional person, but he could appreciate cute things when they were - literally - handed to him. Especially if those cute things were currently wriggling all around and trying to climb up onto his arms and his shoulder.

Issos stared after Adelaide as she swept from the room, then stared down at the box of kittens again, which was less a box full of kittens and more now an empty box that had once held kittens but now held nothing, because all five of the kittens were currently trying to use him as a totem pole climbing post...thing.

Needless to say, it was an excellent afternoon.
