[ JOB LISTING ] Laboratory Technician
[ DIFFICULTY LEVEL ] gaia_star gaia_star gaia_star
[ TASK ]

Isabelle has entrusted you with a new security clearance, allowing you to do work in the more secretive Experimental arm of the labs. Your lab specimens today are hidden inside of a room with no windows and no door you have access to. With you is a lab station with several substances, a computer with extensive readouts, and a file on your specimen. The room is oddly soundproof to all things.

Roll 2d20. You must combine substances into a mixture that causes harm . You must successfully craft and administer this concoction to succeed. After creating the mixture, you slide the syringe into a slot and simply wait to see the results.

You may attempt this 3 times per day.

You must sign an NDA to work in this branch, a non-disclosure agreement that binds you from talking too freely about the work done due to the cutting edge technology, but you are welcome to chat freely with other techs. This means you may write with a friend if you like. Feel free to explore any moral implications with these tests.

Match each individual dice to the below. You may choose what sort of "animal" is within the room from the following list: chicken, chimpanzee, dog, guinea pig, horse, mouse.

Mixtures:
• 1-4: The solution is viscous, vibrant red, and reeks of metal.
• 5-8: The mixture is runny, dim green, and smells of a boggy swamp.
• 9-12: The mixture does not come together. Fail, try again.
• 13-16: The acidic liquid is translucent blue, and cloudy. It has no odor.
• 17-20: The substance is entirely black, as if a hole was there rather than matter. It smells of sulfur.

Effects:
• 1-4: The target's readings go haywire for a moment, but they soon recover. Fail, try again.
• 5-8: The vital signs slow until they remain low enough to be considered an induced coma. Success.
• 9-12: The readings are unclear, suddenly distorting as if affected by a magnetic field. Success.
• 13-16: While the room is sound proof, you can still hear echoes of nightmarish screams. Success. Please quote Its Me Debz for a reward.
• 17-20: The specimen has broken loose from the room. Please evacuate and consider this a success.

After your day has concluded, please fill out the following form describing your experience here at Bates Diagnostics. Your happiness is important to us. (Answers may be brief.)

Issos had never done this sort of thing before.

He could make jewelry. He could figure out the most minute details when it came to his jewelry making, from the size, shape, and weight of each of the materials, to the vibrant or muted color palettes, to the type of string or wire or twine or chains that he used for each and every singular piece. It was a process as familiar to Issos as breathing or eating or sleeping was (not that he did a great deal of the latter, all things considered). He could have made jewelry in his sleep, if he'd cared to try.

This was not the same thing by any means. And Issos was not entirely sure that he wanted it to be the same thing.

This was a messy process. His solution had not come out quite as well as Issos had hoped, but at least it wasn't terrible. It smelled of metal; not quite the coppery, metallic scent of blood, but not far off from that either. It didn't help that the color of it also reminded Issos of blood, his nose wrinkling at the vibrant scarlet of it.

It could be worse.

Issos carefully maneuvered his newest creation, watching the vitals with a hawk eye, wondering how successful he was going to be. It seemed to be going well, if not slightly slowly. Issos narrowed his gaze, waiting, waiting...and slowly, slowly, he saw the vitals drop even lower, until they were almost muted.

It was a success. Issos leaned back with a satisfied nod.

Perfect.

All in all, it had not been a bad day.

Did you enjoy your work today? I did! It was quite enjoyable, as a matter of fact.

Would you like to be considered for permanent employment in this branch? Perhaps. I wouldn't mind working in a more scientific environment...

Did you see or hear anything unusual during this test? Not particularly?

Do you trust Bates Diagnostics? I would say so.

06.10.17

The next day went as good as the first, perhaps even better this time. Issos found himself left alone in the laboratory, which made him pleased, considering that he worked best on his own. Most of the time when he made his wares, it was within the confines of his own rooms, secluded away so as to make the best of his time. Sometimes he sat out on the lawns or in comfortable gathering areas to work idly on a few pieces, but this was generally more geared to when he was selling and needed to simply keep his hands busy.

Or when he was hoping that certain customers would come by.

The substance in Issos' beaker had shifted colors. It had started off as a rather pleasant pale green; Issos had deemed it something like grass colored, but now it was slowly and steadily darkening. He rested his elbows on the top of the counter and propped his chin up in his hands, head tilted a little to the side as he watched the liquid start to congeal, splattering against the sides of the vial.

Issos poked a finger against the glass. The substance oozed, thick and glutinous, and the pale, grassy green had now darkened so completely that it was nothing more than a viscous mass of black. Which, looking at it, was kind of cool, if he was being entirely honest with himself.

Issos poured it curiously over the specimen and waited. This surely couldn't go too badly, could it?

"Danger. Danger. Evacuate the premises. Danger. Specimen is loose in the laboratories. Please take adequate caution and care and proceed to the nearest exit with as much calm as can be displayed. We repeat. Please take adequate caution and care and proceed to the nearest exit with as much calm as can be displayed. Please do not take the elevators. Thank you."

It had been quite a success, surprisingly.

Did you enjoy your work today? Better than yesterday, as a matter of fact.

Would you like to be considered for permanent employment in this branch? I'm still debating.

Did you see or hear anything unusual during this test? Just a lot of darkness.

Do you trust Bates Diagnostics? Probably.
