[ JOB LISTING ] Restoration Apprentice
[ DIFFICULTY LEVEL ] gaia_star gaia_star
[ TASK ] You seem competent enough that Adelaide is willing to trust you with some of the more delicate work that goes on in the shop. Namely the handling of some goods she's gotten her hands on. It's either dirty or broken and needs a quick fix and a small polish. "You'll be in the basement today, follow me." Roll 1d10 to find out which object you get to work with.

If you roll 1-3
Adelaide hands you a small wooden crate. Inside are several delicately wrapped pottery pieces. "They're Greek. They're old. Be careful with them." Your job is simple. Re-assemble an urn using some special adhesive made for such things.

First Step: Separate the pieces. Roll 5 d6. You will have to do this at least twice. You are looking to get a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 - in any order. You just need one of each. Once you have all six, you have your pieces!

Second Step: Simply RP matching them up/gluing them together. (this can be done in the same post as your last piece roll)

If you roll 4-7
You are given a painting to clean. Adelaide hands you a box of q-tips, a bottle of water, and a few very fine and soft towels. "It's a spit shine we are going for. Yes, spit." She gestures at the painting. "It's one of the very best things for cleaning old oil paintings like this one. Wet the q-tip, use it till it's dirty, then get a new one." She points at a table with a stool. "Get started." Roll 1 d20 to see what Adelaide thinks of your work. RP accordingly.

If your roll was 1-10:
--You work on the painting for no more than 5 minutes before Adelaide interrupts you. "You are pushing too hard. It's a light touch. Feather light." She watches you to make sure you get it right.
-----Look at the 1 d20 roll again. (no need to reroll)
-------If even she nods. "Yes. Just like that," she says with a smile. "Excellent work." You get to spend the next few hours painstakingly cleaning the painting.
-------If odd she shakes her head and sighs. "No. Lightly. Just," she puts her hand over her face and inhales. "Just go over there and watch how Remus is doing it." You get to spend the rest of the day observing.

If your roll was 11-20:
--Adelaide watches you work for a few minutes before nodding and walking away. It seems she trusts you to complete the task - so you spend the next couple of hours on it.
-----Look at the 1 d20 roll again. (no need to reroll)
-------If even after two hours, just as you are about half way done with the painting, Adelaide returns. "Yes, you are doing very well, indeed." She smiles warmly, and then sets down a second painting, even larger than the first. "I expect this one to be done after you complete the first." She nods and walks away.
-------If odd after two hours, Adelaide returns and leans over your work. "Oh dear. Oh no." She looks at you and her eyes are cold. "It's not bad, but it's not good enough. Start again. The colors should be vibrant and bright after you've gone over them." She leaves you alone with your work.

If your roll was 8-10

"Here," Adelaide says, leading you to a quiet corner with a table and some cleaning supplies. "I need you to take care of what's in the box."

Roll 1 d100 and look inside the box:

If your roll ends in 0 or 5

---The box holds several knives, all covered in blood. "They need cleaned, I expect a like-new shine. They are old, so be gentle with them." She glances at the box them back at you. "I expect discretion. We do not worry about what clients do outside of our store." She gives you a dangerous smile and walks away.
----If the roll ended in 0, you cut yourself at least once. (If it ended in 5 the cut is up to you.)

If your roll ends in 2, 4, 6, or 8

---The box holds a large amount of gold and silver coins. They are tarnished and covered in much and water deposits. "We are cleaning them for a client who found them off the coast." She doesn't say which coast. "They are indeed pirate gold. I expect them to be cleaned and as polished as you can make them." She nods once, then walks away.

---When you are finished, Adelaide inspects your work.
-----If your roll ended in 2 or 4: "Good work. Now, empty your pockets. All of them." She winks at you. "It's company policy."
-----If your roll ended in 6 or 8: "Could be better. I'll have Harv give them another once over." She glances at you. "Now empty your pockets. Company policy."
(No, you can't steal the coins.)

If your roll ended in 1, 3, 7, or 9

--The box is full of kittens. "These were found in the alley out back last week. We've still had no sign of the mother, and I have to be out of the office all day. You are on kitten sitting duty." Adelaide hands you some kitten food and some small dishes. "Don't panic, they are old enough for kitten food, no bottle feeding unless you really want to. Don't let them out of your sight." She leaves you alone with 5 kittens.

No extra dice rolling, just RP your character babysitting 5 kittens in the corner of a basement. gaia_kittenstar

This time, Ever had come to find Thias on his own -- struggling to regain some of his vibrancy and cheer, forcing a smile until it was real. By the time the other man opened the door to greet him, Ever was grinning in that manic sort of way, impossible to read. He reached out immediately to loop their arms together and drag Thias along.

"Errands, I say." It was carelessly intimate, comfortable; he patted Thias's arm as they made their way to the portal, and the strength behind his own grasp was surprising, leaving little room for argument. "I need an escort."

He made it sound like something fun: like a true adventure out into the human world, to visit some public space and learn more about the people they were harvesting. And maybe, if Thias had pushed, it could have ended up being exactly that. Some part of Ever sparked with curiosity, or perhaps it was familiarity, tempted to forget about their work and the shattering crystal and instead turn to something more exciting, more strange and fun.

Of course, where they ended up was at the Antique shop: being escorted into the backroom with a distant gesture and put to work. Ever grinned again at Thias, and offered absolutely no apology as he dropped down at a table in the corner to poke through the box he'd been handed and see what it held.

"This should be fun," he offered across at Thias, heavy with an edge of sarcasm and slightly too loud in the mostly-empty room -- as Ever dug out a handful of filthy old knives, coated with a thick layer of blood. He could smell it on them, metallic and only a bit faded; he could feel it on his fingers, sticky and clinging to his skin. He tasted the tip of one finger, just lightly, and pulled a little face. Instead of poking around with them more, he reached out to hook two fingers around the neck of the cleaning solution and drag it in.

"Honestly, there are worse tasks. If you ask me, even if this probably isn't the exciting outing you'd been hoping when you saw me --" He chatted absently, idly, filling the air while he swiped down the knives. When one sliced easily through the meat of his thumb, he didn't seem too worried about it, just wiped the weapon clean again and moved onto the next one. It wasn't the first time he'd injured himself like this, and it certainly wouldn't be the last.

When they were all done, then he'd worry about the little knicks and injuries the blades had left against his skin, sucking on the meat of his hand and dropping the lot of his work back into the box. They were almost certainly going to get dirty again, and fast. He didn't think that far ahead.

"What is it you're working on, exactly?" Slowly, he levered himself up so that he could stand next to Thias while he worked, hovering. Not watching, exactly, but listening, his head cocked and his hands on his knees.

Thias had just managed to finally get back to his room, laying down on cushions as a rather exasperated sigh left his lips before a sound echoed from the door. He was exhausted from having to deal with too many humans and putting too much of a fake smile in order to deal with all of their demands when they walked through the glass door. They hadn’t been too particularly friendly with the stallion or maybe he really just wasn’t as polite as he had thought he was even though he had taken pride in being rather amiable with everyone he met. The noise at the door had only made him groan a little in protest before getting to his feet and dragging himself over to it as he attempted to put the best impression forward. Opening the door Thias was rather startled to see Ever there, even more so as the pale stallion looped his arm around his and dragged him out of his room as a faint blush started to form on his cheeks. As he followed him Thias did raise an eyebrow as the other mentioned the word escort, though he was quite sure that what he was thinking and what the pale stallion had meant were entirely two different definitions and he could only blame the entire situation on Rook for planting the idea in his head earlier.

“Alright I’ll come along as long as it isn’t anything too tedious.” He fell into the same pace of his as they headed to the portals, curiosity building as Ever lead the way as if for once he was looking forward going to the human world.

He shouldn’t have been surprised when they ended up in the antique shop, both with a box in hand and dropped off in the rather well organized room.

Thias stared at his box for a moment, maybe wishing his own definition of escort had been right before pulling the lid off and taking a seat to get to work.

“Oh sure, just boxes and boxes of fun.” He snorted glancing at the pale stallion before picking up one of the pieces and rubbing it between his thumb and index finger, it was caked in water stains and gunk as if it had soaked too long in the sea. After a few moments of doing his best to clean it with the solution and rags that the owner had been so kind to provide Thias finally make out what it was. Gold, pirate’s gold to be exact, and a lot of it if he could judge from the rest of the contents that filled every inch of its container. Whoever it belonged to would be rich, maybe too rich as a thought crossed Thias’s mind only to be squashed again as Ever spoke up.

“Oh.. no… this may have not what I expected at all.” There was another glance in Ever’s direction before he picked up another piece of gold taking his time to clean it well enough that it was at least suitable when it gleamed in the light. It was going to be a rather tedious job but at least Thias was guaranteed to make sure it was done correctly and to the best of his own abilities when it came to gold. “I guess there are worst tasked you could have dragged me out to help you with. How many have you done since the joining me on guard duty?”

Picking up another piece he shot another glance at the pale stallion, a grin curled at the edges of Thias's lips as he paused long enough to tip the box in Ever's direction so the gold pieces would shift enough to make an audible noise. “Gold, polishing off apparently pirate’s gold. Do you think they would notice any missing?”

For just a moment, Ever stood quietly -- his head cocked to one side and his expression distant, thoughtful. He was listening to the sound of those coins chiming together and trying to get an idea of just how many there were in Thias's box, just how large of a stash it might be. Whether or not anyone would notice a slight change in the weight of the box, or the goods contained within it. Then, idly, he hummed. A smile started to spread across his mouth and his attention turned outward, trying to figure out if anyone was watching them, or listening, or within earshot. He thought not. They'd been shuttled off to a quiet corner to fend for themselves.

So, slowly, he reached a hand out to tuck four or five coins into his palm and then drop them into the front pocket of one of his shirts. His expression was bright and satisfied, his chin tipped up at the smile turned into a full-on grin.

"Let's find out, shall we?" Of course, it could mean trouble. But Ever didn't seem terribly concerned about that. There was something almost manic about the way he settled in to help Thias finish up his task, almost excited to see what would happen when the pair of them finally left this task behind to head back toward home, with stolen booty tucked into his pocket.

Thias watched with idle curiosity at first, he had assumed that Ever was merely listening to the coins as they moved mentally counting how much the box held. He didn’t expect him to show too much interest until a smile spread across his face leaving Thias looking puzzled at what the pale stallion was thinking or if what he was thinking had anything at all to do with the coins. Usually he was pretty good at reading others but so far Ever was a little more of an enigma to him, maybe it was just the simple fact that he tended to keep things mostly behind shades and a smile. Maybe he was really didn’t understand most horsemen.

He watched, eyes going wide as Ever took a few coins into his hand slipping them discreetly into his pocket with a wide grin spreading across his face. It took a moment for all of it to register in Thias’s mind before he returned the same smile, amused and intrigued.

“Sounds like fun.” Thias watched him before adding a few coins to his own pocket, however unlike Ever he was less discreet about it and didn’t attempt to hide them very well by any means. He worked swiftly in finishing the task, a little amused that the other stallion had offered to help with as much enthusiasm before taking the box to Adelaide. She of course made him dump out his pockets after inspect the work, in which he easily handed over what he had, unfazed at being caught, or maybe he had planned for it to be that way.
