Mask had been acting weird. Rep had noticed since the blackout and had been deeply concerned. His kid was a little bit odd by anyone's standards but it was something that just made him feel closer to him. He'd always had a dubious relationship with his mother and that had translated into working extra hard as a parent to make sure that it was never ever the case with his kids. Mask just happened to be the kid who elicited the most concern in him. Harrison was a little nerd, but that was fine, he would grow out of it and any harassing him about it would only make him worse.
It had taken a few sit downs with Rep to enforce this and make him realise that bullying his own child was exactly what he'd been trying not to do for a long time. This had been enough to stop him.
Maze was tough herself, able to handle both of her brothers and able to handle Mask. Mask though, there was something vulnerable about him, something that Rep related to. He was the most prone to bragging and tantrums of all the children and to most people that might have seemed like he was the toughest or most resilient. Rep knew better though, he knew that tantrums were almost always something to do with fear or frustration you couldn't do anything about and bragging more often than not was overcompensating for some sort of inadequacy.
He worried about Mask and didn't want the little guy to get hurt or even worse - to one day grow up anything like him.
That was why he took him away from the chaos of the fear gathering and sat down with him in one of the trees in the war canopy. "Are you sure you are all right?" he asked him in case he hadn't wanted to say in front of his siblings.

And there it sat, and its mask was different now, and it was impossible to tell when it had changed appearances. It appeared as Rep hoped it would appear, perhaps fierce, perhaps strong, perhaps something sculpted more in its progenitor's appearance.
"Yes," it replied simply, dangling gangly limbs off the tree branch, "I like this dream very much. She said I wouldn't but I do, because you are here."

Rep watched his boy with a mixture of worry and fascination. Mask was one of his kids who had been born with red hair like him, and it had been something that bonded him to the kid right away. More than that though was his temper and even the tendency to combine that temper with something contemplative.
He sighed shallowly. "Who said you wouldn't?" he asked, "It's no that I don't believe you." because wouldn't it be a thing if his kid was one of the first from war to be a priestess?
"But aye I'm here. I'll always be here wee man."

Upon hearing that, it instinctively weaved through the branches a little closer to Rep, reaching for the comfort of his presence. It was the same gesture as a child seeking comfort to reaffirm how important they were, sudden and spontaneously. "Do you love me?"

Rep smirked, leaning forward to pick up the foal in a strong embrace. "Course I do." he said without an inch of hesitation. "You are a ******** good kid."

It looked relieved, or as closed to relieved as someone wearing a mask could, figure slouching again, casually.
"I love you too," it whispered, and then laughed a bit to itself, wildly, "I made you a present for your box."

Rep had never been too judgemental of how strange his kid was. He said some weird things, but it was fine. Rep had been weird as a foal too. It was all worth it, and he held the fondest hope for all of the kids when they grew up.
"Did you?" he asked, looking genuinely interested. Rep liked free s**t, especially sentimental free s**t he could keep for ever. "Can I see?"
