He had diverted some attention towards manual collection, which was probably a mistake when you had an anxious heart like Bjornbrandr did and a constant need to check up on his loved ones, and now he was alone in the dull red hallways. He had to take a break before collecting more; being on constant alert on top of his other worries could drain any man mentally after a while, no matter how busy he remained.
Maybe he should have just straight up followed one of the girls...It wasn't that either couldn't take care of themselves, but with everything just so unknown now...
Bjorn paused and pulled out his phone, cursing as his large thumbs slowed the process down.
Nio Love To Maebe: how is your collection going do you need help?

Jingle jingle clink clink, what a jovial sound Maebe made when she walked. She was noisy and full, rubbing her distended stomach as it jingled and all the shards she'd eaten clacked against one another inside. It was musical, like the insects in the Observatory, and it pleased her very much. She'd just returned from her second job collecting Fear when she received the message. She opened up her phone, and her face lit up with an obnoxious degree of sweet joy. She considered telling him that yes, she needed him to collect all of the Fear for her, because she was ever so over-burdened with her own duties (read: all the shards she'd stolen) and moving around tired her more lately. But instead, she tapped out a simple, quick and surprisingly truthful; 'No, but the company would be nice.' Then she put away her phone, and the glee in her smile faded as she let reality set in. He would be happy to accompany her, she was sure of it. But was it really enough? It was never enough. She was a selfish, selfish creature. Always.

You know she is a user, his brother said once, when he caught the guardian texting, some dreamy day before the original Isles had been destroyed, before his family had been snatched and ripped and torn into less than Fear particles.
All of Famine are users, Bjorn had joked, though he was mildly annoyed with his brother's observation. The tone and implication. Drugs come part and parcel with the clan.
That is not what I meant.

Maebe froze in place the moment she read his request. She looked around; right, of course. He was probably worried about the darkness, wasn't he? But she loved the darkness, felt at home in it. She'd been slinking around it ever since she'd returned. Still, he wanted her to stay still, and she listened to him like no other. medigel To Bjorn: 2nd floor, I haven't gotten very far since getting back. I can jingle for you, if it helps. I'm very jingly today!

Nio Love To Maebe: ok yes please do He groaned, however. All the way down to the second floor why. Well, at least it was a downhill jog. He couldn't possibly imagine having to run up all those flights at all for any particular reason whatsoever, no sir. Still, he stopped by his room for supplies before beginning the journey down. By light of the flashlight he had grabbed, Bjorn navigated the stairs down. Part of him was still tense about running into something—there had to be an intruder, right? But it was quiet other than the footsteps of passing horsemen and distant shouts. The dim light threw everything into sharper, more sinister shapes. Maebe was probably enjoying herself too much; he wondered if she was going to jump him just for fun. Bjorn paused at the threshold to the second floor, listening for the jingles amidst the commotion as other horsemen moved about. "I am here!" he called, which made several of them glance at him and then away with disinterest.

Bjorn was right; Maebe was enjoying herself just a little too much. She was jumping up and down, quite ridiculously, and the jangles of shards in her stomach made a noisy clatter. At this point the shards had begun to rip her bandages, which left a few tears near the bottom of her stomach, but it was nothing that wouldn't heal after she'd unloaded her prize and given herself time. "Bjorn!" She called out, cupping her hands around her mouth. "I can hear you! Should I come to you?" None of this stopped her jumping, of course. She was jangling just as loudly as ever.

"No need!" The noise was too loud not to follow, and with a sharp and bright beam in her direction pre-empting him, Bjorn found her, cutting a dark silhouette in the red halls like some giant come to feast. "I hope you did not start without--"
His smile dimmed at the sight of her. Now Maebe was predisposed to interesting choices and he knew this, but seeing her bulging stomach on an otherwise slighter than slight form was a little more grotesque than usual. It bounced and jingled with the bells; he could see the beginnings of glimmers between the tears forming on her bandages.
"I see the eon did not sate your hunger?"

"It's not hunger that has me full, my precious." She coo'd out, sliding her hand between her bandages and pulling out a handful of shards. "But loot. Such pretty loot, too. I planned on bringing it up to my room before you texted me. Here, this gift is for you." She holds out the shards for him with both hands, her eyes glittering with pride at being able to give him something she finds this beautiful and worthwhile. "Shards from the fallen crystal. All mine now, as many as I could carry. And these, these are yours. You can give some to America, if you like. Aren't they pretty?"

He hesitated and then reached out to collect some of the crystals before they fell from her hands. "They shine," he agreed, knowing this meant something to Maebe but unsure he could match her perspective. "But should these not be returned? Carrying around a symbol of the crystal's destruction feels like an ill omen..."
Then again, that might have been why she collected them in the first place.
Bjorn carefully let the shards slide from his hands and into one of the satchels at his belt. "If they carry your blessing, however, then I am proud to have them. If you would like, I could craft the pieces into jewelry?"

For a very solid moment, Maebe looked heartbroken. Her gift.. was an ill omen? She tried not to look like she'd just been hurt, but oh, there was no stopping it. Her eyes went to the tiny bulge against her flat stomach, and she attempted very hard to collect herself. "I just.. thought.." Sorry Bjorn, you broke her. Sad, jingly little horsewoman.

It should have been embarrassing how quickly he reacted. Bjorn went to his knees and made to touch both of her arms, thick brows knitting. "I meant no offense," he said quickly, trying to soften his voice from its habitual boom. "Still, those were thoughtless words of mine. You took the time to collect them for me. I would rather have them cut open my hands than see you distressed, Maebe."

Since her eyes were already down on her stomach, it didn't take much to see Bjorn there on his knees, apologizing. Her eyes widened very slowly, before she adamantly shook her head. "Don't. It's not your fault! You just know things.. better than I do, sometimes. I didn't think that these shards could be anything as awful as an ill omen. And I just handed them to you, without thinking, and I could have brought you bad luck.." Her lip quivered, and she couldn't meet his eyes. "That's the opposite of what I want."

"No, no...Listen. The intent of it matters," Bjorn told her gently, in the same tone of voice he used on America sometimes. (To middling results.) "You wish them to be a gift? Then that is what they are. If you do not believe it, I will make it so." He cold make jewelry like he had mentioned, or at the very least fashion some sort of charm.
He offered a smile. "I believe you and your clever hands bring me more than enough good luck on their own, though. Even if it disguises itself as trouble."

It wasn't until he called her hands clever that she finally managed to meet his eyes. When she met them, she became increasingly aware that he was still knelt down in front of her, prostrate and apologetic, and so undeniably cute. Her lips pursed tight to keep the smile from forming when he called her trouble, but she couldn't stop her hand from reaching out, just to brush the back of her fingers against his cheek. "You think my hands clever?"

"I also think them very tricksy," he said, his smile widening into a grin that creased into dimples.
As if in agreement, something popped its head out from under the top of the satchel holding the crystals. It eyed Maebe with curiosity. Bjorn didn't seem to notice the movement. Probably because Maebe was very, very close.
