"Well..." The lion peered down at the otherwise unmoving rabbit and reached out a paw to give it several pokes. He'd received a report of an oddity in this area, odd in the sense that those who were local didn't recognise him and there had been several rumours circulating regarding his identity. Suffice it to say that the unconscious rabbit had been in regions he shouldn't have been in, with those rumours going so far as to claim that he had come from the badlands himself. Given the fact this was a rabbit, Gus Gus had elected to take it all with a pinch of salt.
...Or at least he would refrain from judging the fur ball until he was actually awake again.
If the lion was to make a guess, this particular individual had been making a run for it and when he said 'making a run', it seemed that he had been running for a considerable amount of time. After all, when his existence had first been reported he'd been awake (and still moving), it was only now that he had been found that he was no longer mobile. Still, given his foreign demeanour and lack of documentation of any sort, it was clear that the guard had an foreign alien in their territory. It was something that was completely unheard of given that their borders and their gate remained completely shut.
Thus, one did have to wonder how in the nine hells the creature had gotten in. Gus Gus could only surmise that perhaps the individual had exploited the same routes that the Scourge now did. While it wasn't his responsibility to shut those routes off, he knew that the vast majority had been found and sealed. If there was one remaining, then it was in everyone's best interests for them to find out where that might be.
"You know, I think he might be dead," Gus Gus concluded towards one of the other guards as he scooped the rabbit into his paw for closer inspection.
"Nah mate, he's still breathing, look..." his companion pointed out and sure enough the delicate rise and fall of the rabbit's chest could be seen.
"Huh, well then..."
The rabbit was promptly dropped, it was enough for Durama to release a snort of surprise and his eyes finally snapped open.
"Ow," he muttered as he pushed himself onto his hindlegs and gave his back a rub. It was only then that he became aware of the fact that he was in the company of others. Really he should have been more aware of this, particularly given that he had just been dropped from a considerable height. However, as someone who had just run what felt like the length of a fair chunk of this region, he was the very definition of tired.
"It speaks," Gus Gus noted and lowered his head so that he was eye level with their visitor. "Now it's going to have to answer several questions regarding how it got in," he murmured, causing the rabbit to squint at him.
"I walked," Durama replied.
"From where?" Gus Gus clarified and shook his head. "Our gates are closed, they have been for generations and to have someone simply walk in would indicate there are a few gaps in our defences," he pointed out.
Durama gazed at him for a considerable amount of time as he pondered over how best to reply to this particular query. On the one paw, he was in the company of those who could quickly make things difficult for him but this wasn't really a new thing on this trip. On the other paw, he might potentially expose a piece of information that the Justicar himself had given him in good faith. Perhaps that vulnerability was meant to stay open under his orders? From what the rabbit had gathered, the circumstances surrounding his very existence in the roguelands, and by extension his collective, were complex. While Durama had no desire to perish before his quest was over, he didn't really have any desire to jeopardise that either!
In these cases, one had to wonder how best to approach it.
Honesty, perhaps?
"The Justicar let me in," The clouded rabbit finally opted for honesty, assuming that on this occasion it might pay off. Nepotism wasn't common in the Bahari'mtoto, but sometimes dropping a name could go a long way towards keeping yourself safe. "Um... Justicar Destati," he clarified. The lion, who had been preparing to follow up with this very question, shut his mouth in response and raised a brow. It was common knowledge among this pride of lions that Destati had been missing for a considerable amount of time... though based on intelligence provided by the Justicar's present in this territory, it was for good reason.
Alive, but handling matters elsewhere, was how they put it.
"He needed something, but he couldn't really let other folks go as he needed them and their skills," the rabbit continued and shook his head. "I have no idea what he was up to, but I offered to go and get what he needed," he continued. "He showed me the way in and then when I got there someone else told me to run out this way..."
"Who?" Gus Gus challenged.
"I didn't get their name, there seem to be a fair few clumps of lions all over the place patrolling," Durama pointed out honestly. He dared not mention who truly had helped him, but he wasn't lying when he said he had seen patrolling lions. Coordinated and seemingly well armed, he just hadn't chosen to cross their paths. Wherever he had been in those badlands, it seemed that both sides weren't welcoming of strangers. "I really just did as I was told and uh...here I am?"
"Do you even know where you are?" Gus lifted his brow higher.
"Honestly... No."
"So how do you intend to find your way out...?" The lion had seemingly loosened up, his instincts reassuring him that on this occasion it seemed that this individual was indeed sent by the wayward Justicar.
"Well at this point I was rather hoping that was where you would help," Durama coughed. "If you happen to know a way out, then surely you can just...let me be on my way?"
"Yeah," Gus Gus shook his head. "If only it were that simple," he sighed heavily and motioned for him to follow. "You might as well rest up in safety, it's going to take a while to let you leave. Opening our gates is no small feat..."Words: 1102
