[ JOB LISTING ] Cafeteria Worker
[ DIFFICULTY LEVEL ] gaia_star
[ TASK ] To serve special lunches to guests that will ensure their diet remains On Course For Success

The human staff has been taking a lot of injuries lately handling the dining periods, and extra help, even just for an hour a day, would help tremendously!

The cafeteria is white on white on white. It's pristine. Enya plays gently in the distance. The guests sit themselves down at their tables with their very white trays and very white, very empty plates and try to very patiently wait for a server to approach them. You are their server. You are their savior.

Roll 2d6 and complete the 2 prompts
  1. You give them a Cherry Coke Zero for their meal. They cry in gratitude as others look on in envy.
  2. You give them 6 peas. Talk them through eating every single one mindfully. Mindfulness is very On Trend right now.
  3. You give them a Twinkie. Their neighbor sees this, a fight breaks out.
  4. You walk a guest through eating a feast made entirely with their imagination.
  5. You give them a book to read, food for thought is important after all. They attack you.
  6. The single vending machine which only stocks small, fifty dollars bags of dried seaweed has not been restocked yet for the day. A riot breaks out.

It was a nice break in the day when this job started: ta pause between exploring other areas of the human world, a venture in to learn about their cuisine and table habits. With enthusiasm, he dragged the apron around his waist, thrilled by the soft flow of the fabric -- more like his usual wear, less fitted, more functional -- and took up place for a quick rundown of how this worked.

He was, rapidly, lost. There were so many elements to human food. Fear was simpler, even despite the multitude of ways it could be formed, it was nothing like this. There were so many kinds of beverage, so many options of main meals and sides, vegetables and starches and proteins and desserts and sauces and --

Eventually, he just tuned it out. Food was food. These people were hungry. Certainly, they'd just accept whatever he put in front of them. So he started circling tables, very carefully, winding his way between tables and trying to act like a proper human man. He was supposed to write something down. He didn't. He just asked what they wanted with a carefully, hilariously blank expression on his face and listened to the strange music into the background.

Not long into his shift, things started to go wrong. There was no real surprise there. The strange part was that it didn't seem to be in any way his fault. A small cluster of people around one of the strange, clicking and ticking, twisting and turning machines was the source of the problem. One of them whispered something to another, who passed it on to another and another, up and down the chain, the volume raising as the clustered in closer. Slowly, it built into something dark and angry.

One of them came up to him, her tone sharp and annoyed. She was perfectly coiffed, tanned with pale hair. If he could have seen it, Ever would have been fascinated. As it was, he mostly focused on the way her swishy too-short dress moved around her legs, pondering what the use of such a garment was.

"Excuse me, but when are you restocking the seaweed?" It came with a snort, looking down her nose at him, and he drew his attention upward.

There was no answer he could give her. He didn't fully understand what she was asking, to start, and he had no way to take care of it even if he had. Ever was saved from the problem by a sudden fury of action as someone, triumphant, found one more bag in the bottom left pocket -- bought it -- and set everyone else off in the room.

It turned into a fight, someone throwing a rough and wild punch. From there it broken into an all-out brawl, everyone fighting for that precious packet of food. With a whoop, Ever threw himself into it, pushing people aside and trying to claim the prize for himself, whatever it was.

Eventually, the humans ran out of energy. Ever could have gone a bit longer; had probably dealt out more than just bruises to some of the more enthusiastic among them. The rioting and the brawl died down into something quieter and breathless, especially since the seaweed had vanished beneath the seething mass of fighting humans.

Dragging himself up out of the mess, Ever found a human that seemed quite remarkably injured, collapsed down into a chair and holding their other arm in close against their chest. Worried, he tapped them on the shoulder, and in response they flinched. Probably, then, he'd been the one to deal this damage, a broken wrist or perhaps some broken fingers, a hand that smelled tangy and metallic. Blood. Human blood. Ever hummed a sound out between his teeth and dug around among the items he had in his pocket.

"Here, perhaps this will help." It came with a smile, bright and enthusiastic. In his hand, the plastic packaging of a twinkie crinkled, drawing the human's hands down to stare at it in a puzzled sort of way. Slowly, the man reached out with his good arm to take it, like a nervous animal, too afraid to refuse. Under Ever's unwavering focus, he tore it open with his teeth, to slowly peel the pastry free.

And next to him, someone looked up and gasped. The sight of food made her mouth water and, shakily, she pushed herself up to try and grasp it out of his hands.

That simply, the fight was renewed. Ever made a delighted sound and dove back in. This was definitely the best job he'd done so far.
