Laboratory Technician// Confidential Work

[ JOB LISTING ] Laboratory Technician

[ TASK ]

Isabelle has entrusted you with a new security clearance, allowing you to do work in the more secretive Experimental arm of the labs. Your lab specimens today are hidden inside of a room with no windows and no door you have access to. With you is a lab station with several substances, a computer with extensive readouts, and a file on your specimen. The room is oddly soundproof to all things.

Roll 2d20. You must combine substances into a mixture that causes harm . You must successfully craft and administer this concoction to succeed. After creating the mixture, you slide the syringe into a slot and simply wait to see the results.

You may attempt this 3 times per day.

You must sign an NDA to work in this branch, a non-disclosure agreement that binds you from talking too freely about the work done due to the cutting edge technology, but you are welcome to chat freely with other techs. This means you may write with a friend if you like. Feel free to explore any moral implications with these tests.

Match each individual dice to the below. You may choose what sort of "animal" is within the room from the following list: chicken, chimpanzee, dog, guinea pig, horse, mouse.

Mixtures:
• 1-4: The solution is viscous, vibrant red, and reeks of metal.
• 5-8: The mixture is runny, dim green, and smells of a boggy swamp.
• 9-12: The mixture does not come together. Fail, try again.
• 13-16: The acidic liquid is translucent blue, and cloudy. It has no odor.
• 17-20: The substance is entirely black, as if a hole was there rather than matter. It smells of sulfur.

Effects:
• 1-4: The target's readings go haywire for a moment, but they soon recover. Fail, try again.
• 5-8: The vital signs slow until they remain low enough to be considered an induced coma. Success.
• 9-12: The readings are unclear, suddenly distorting as if affected by a magnetic field. Success.
• 13-16: While the room is sound proof, you can still hear echoes of nightmarish screams. Success. Please quote Its Me Debz for a reward.
• 17-20: The specimen has broken loose from the room. Please evacuate and consider this a success.

After your day has concluded, please fill out the following form describing your experience here at Bates Diagnostics. Your happiness is important to us. (Answers may be brief.)

It had to be some sort of glitch in the system. That's what mistake with this new fancy technology was called, right? Bjorn had no business being this far up in security clearance, and yet the receptionist had gestured him inside, where he had been quickly outfitted in appropriate uniform, guest card, and hardy gloves. Well, first he had to sign a non-disclosure agreement, then the gloves and mask came on.

It was so pristine in the room, it reminded Bjorn of the one he had woken up in not too long ago; thus, it made him want to shudder. The tech who had ushered him in had told him also that the room was soundproof - he wondered if it was being monitored at all, then. What if something happened to him while mixing these chemicals that he had no business touching in the first place? Bah, he had to tell himself, shrugging off the sense of uncertainty. It cannot be worse than a forge burn on the thighs.

(It had taken him almost a week to walk normally.)

At random he took several of the substances and mixed them, only stopping when he feared it had a chance of boiling up or exploding. Bjorn ended with something akin to blood, which made him wonder if this was what Humans had: something synthesized. He knew of stories about how they would exchange blood with one another for medicinal purposes, which was frankly gross. The mixture was set into the syringe as the instructions told him and waited.

His sample animal was a mockery of the human being, something more curled and hairy and less intelligent. "Chimpanzee," a machine read out. Within moments of the injection, the animal was screeching something horrible - or, at least that was what Bjorn assumed was happening, as its mouth was wide, its teeth gleamed with spittle, and its eyes were wide as it shook and banged about its cage. Its volume must have increased, as he could even begin to hear some of its rattle through the soundproofing. It sounded almost human.

But it wasn't as satisfying to gather Fear this way. Bjorn made a face as he filled out the sheet.

Did you enjoy your work today? It was simple but not satisfying in spite of the success.

Would you like to be considered for permanent employment in this branch? If there is something more hands on, I would not mind.

Did you see or hear anything unusual during this test? The animal's screams could get past the sound barrier you placed but otherwise no.

Do you trust Bates Diagnostics? Trust is earned.

Ms. Bates walked with a gait so even she may as well have been a ghost gliding across the lab.

"Well done," she murmurs, looking Bjorn up and down with the same fondness a houndmaster gives his hounds. "Progress is always nice to see, don't you think?" Uncannily blue eyes glittered at the man, casting her eyes over his survey answers, lips quirking upwards.

She laid a hand upon his shoulder, elegant fingers tipped with vibrant blue nails filed sharp. "Do be sure to make a reappearance. I can't often find competent employees that are..." Ms. Bates smiled. "Discretionary."
