As a greeter in the store part of Horse, it is your job to greet members of the Herd as they enter, welcoming them to the end of the technological pilgrimage. It is your job to make sure they get their exclusive web store upgrade and if required, show them where the bathrooms are and validate their parking.

Anywhere else it's not an exclusive job, here at Horse though, it is a privilege!

Be nice to the humans customers, our reputation depends on it.

  1. You run into an extremely socially awkward customer who wants to get the signature of everyone in the showroom and have to carefully talk them out of it because people are busy.
  2. A belligerent mother shows up demanding that you fix her hPhone which "isn't working properly", she has somehow set it to airplane mode. Either you help her fix it or you direct her to the stable.
  3. You greet someone entering the shop and for whatever reason they think that your choice of greeting or tone is offensive and give you a lecture on "proper etiquette"

  5. Someone on the way in drops a very sticky drink all over the floor and you are tasked with mopping it up like a janitor.

One job had, in fact, been incredibly easy -- so his next opportunity, Ever found his way to the strange portal and into more strange clothes to try another one. This one, he made sure, interacted with human beings. Not just a little bit, but a lot, up front and personal, coming to him for help and advice and suggestions. It meant that he had to appear as human as possible, himself, had to talk like them and smile like them and otherwise convincingly portray himself as Other.

He took up his post with a s**t-eating grin on his face and the mirrored sunglasses low on his nose, more than prepared to to take on whatever task was thrown his way. People came and went, and he gave them all a hearty hello as they passed -- largely ignored. Until one woman approached, her movements an echo of his own frenzied excitement as she struggled to show him something on a sheet of paper and get his attention.

"Hello!"

"Hello!"

"Hello!"

They could have kept going, except the woman just gave him a puzzled look and broke the cycle, shaking the paper at him. She explained her problem -- she wasn't going to leave any of her goods with them to be repaired until every single person in the showroom had signed this sheet of paper -- and Ever just nodded rapidly, agreeing and completely without understanding, as she did. After she'd stopped speaking he nodded for a moment longer before he realized.

Then he opened and closed his mouth a few times, chewing on words and trying to figure out what answer he was supposed to give. What ended up coming out was his usual spiel, the default message he gave to everyone as they came in: directions to the stable, and an update on their exciting upcoming problem. The woman scowled at him like he was crazy and shook the paper at him again, her frustration rising. Again, she explained the dilemma, and again Ever nodded his understanding only to turn a blank face in her direction.

The good news was that it worked. Exasperated, she stormed out of the store, leaving him to smile at whoever came next. The bad news was that she was grumbling about how she'd never come back HERE again.

His first encounter had taken up pretty much the entire morning, and left him still full of excited energy. So many people came into this place; so many people smiled or nodded or shot a hello back at him. They smelled different, and their clothing sounded different, quiet and loose around them. They had different voices, reserved a bit to Ever's ears but fascinating in their own ways. And most of them skirted around him, carefully, like they could sense there was something off here.

"Hello!" The enthusiasm behind the word didn't get through to this particular man. Instead of answering with a hello of his own, he drew to a halt and stepped in just a tiny bit too close, and Ever could just about feel the frown on the man's face. It made his smile faltered just a little, made him tip his head to one side and replay that last moment in a considering kind of way.

"Hello?" Ever repeated, with less certainty now, as the man pressed in even closer. He wasn't entirely sure that was what he'd said the first time, as if some other thought might have slipped out of him instead.

But no, that was right. The man, in reply blew out a snort and exploded:

"Hello? Is that how you greet paying customers? A hello and that mocking excuse for a smile on your face? With a pair of sunglasses on your face despite the fact that you're inside and your shirt halfway unbuttoned --" The rant went on, surprisingly loud and surprisingly aggressive and for a surprisingly long time. As the man spoke, Ever's eyebrows rose over the tops of his glasses, his head cocking to the side like a bird's, or like a quizzical cat, leaning over more and more. He didn't answer, because it didn't sound to him like any of these were actually questions.

Instead he just let the man speak his piece in his frenzy, turning his face down as a finger was thrust into the middle of his chest, the start of thread spilling off his tongue --

And that was, apparently, his breaking point. He caught that finger and twisted the hand behind the man's back to forcibly marched him outside, careless of any potential store policies. The man looked stunned, had thought him weak. When Ever smiled and waved him on his way, he was too surprised and confused to object.
