Laboratory Technician// Confidential Work

[ JOB LISTING ] Laboratory Technician
[ DIFFICULTY LEVEL ] gaia_star gaia_star gaia_star
[ TASK ]

Isabelle has entrusted you with a new security clearance, allowing you to do work in the more secretive Experimental arm of the labs. Your lab specimens today are hidden inside of a room with no windows and no door you have access to. With you is a lab station with several substances, a computer with extensive readouts, and a file on your specimen. The room is oddly soundproof to all things.

Roll 2d20. You must combine substances into a mixture that causes harm . You must successfully craft and administer this concoction to succeed. After creating the mixture, you slide the syringe into a slot and simply wait to see the results.

You may attempt this 3 times per day.

You must sign an NDA to work in this branch, a non-disclosure agreement that binds you from talking too freely about the work done due to the cutting edge technology, but you are welcome to chat freely with other techs. This means you may write with a friend if you like. Feel free to explore any moral implications with these tests.

Match each individual dice to the below. You may choose what sort of "animal" is within the room from the following list: chicken, chimpanzee, dog, guinea pig, horse, mouse.

Mixtures:
• 1-4: The solution is viscous, vibrant red, and reeks of metal.
• 5-8: The mixture is runny, dim green, and smells of a boggy swamp.
• 9-12: The mixture does not come together. Fail, try again.
• 13-16: The acidic liquid is translucent blue, and cloudy. It has no odor.
• 17-20: The substance is entirely black, as if a hole was there rather than matter. It smells of sulfur.

Effects:
• 1-4: The target's readings go haywire for a moment, but they soon recover. Fail, try again.
• 5-8: The vital signs slow until they remain low enough to be considered an induced coma. Success.
• 9-12: The readings are unclear, suddenly distorting as if affected by a magnetic field. Success.
• 13-16: While the room is sound proof, you can still hear echoes of nightmarish screams. Success. Please quote Its Me Debz for a reward.
• 17-20: The specimen has broken loose from the room. Please evacuate and consider this a success.

After your day has concluded, please fill out the following form describing your experience here at Bates Diagnostics. Your happiness is important to us. (Answers may be brief.)

They had fresh, shiny new human clothing -- which had Ever just about bouncing, oddly excited about the idea of venturing in the world and really, truly playing the part of a main man, of a proper dude, of a guy on the go. The portal, too, had a strange kind of appeal: the way it wobbled and spoke against his senses, a sound unlike any other he'd heard, and he thought he picked up a faint scent of ozone. It made him draw in a delighted sort of breath, and he traveled through it almost before the tech was done explaining the safety procedures.

Of course, when they got to the human world, to take on a job and play at normal, some of that enthusiasm faded away, from a bubbling well to a slow frown. Instead of wearing his layers and layers of shirts, Ever had to strip down and put on a uniform that fit his body too closely, too properly; a coat that was stiff and just a little bit scratchy. There were other people around, he thought, but he wasn't entirely sure what the difference was between them and him.

"Are we all just pretending?" He whispered in a hiss to Zyk, between introductions to other people in the lab.

Of course, this job would be more of Zyk's thing than his own. This was like what Zyk did for fun, back at home, wasn't it? Taking his odds and ends and assembling them into something that altered the world around him. Ever's task was usually more in the realm of collection, finding thing that were unusual, unexpected. In exploring strange landscapes and struggling to find his way back again.

None of it meant being cooped up in a room that hummed quite as obnoxiously as this one.

The animal was a welcome surprise. His was a guinea pig, a creature that would fit perfectly into his darkened hands, fuzzy and squirming and squeaking in a way that destroyed the quiet peace of this bland room. For a long time, Ever just listened to it, wishing he could let it run back and forth across his palms and arms. Let it bite him. He wouldn't mind.

The little room that locked his creature up was an obstacle that offered more interest than potions and the task at hand, but eventually Ever sighed and turned his attention to the science. In a way. Mostly by randomly combining ingredients together, a mish mash of strange scents and bubbling sounds, waiting until the air around it tasted positively metalic to his senses. He ignored the readouts, the computers, the folders, the explanations, and poured the rusty, viscous solution into its syringe.

From within the creature's room, the squeaking became more fierce, wild. For a little while, his guinea pig fought against the oncoming sleep scrabbled at the wall as close to Ever as it could get, as if he would save it. Then, slowly, its vitals faded to a low thrum instead, as it slid into a coma.

Ever huffed a breath out through his nose, and turned his attention to Zyk and his work, instead. "That was really disappointing."

Not exactly comfortable, but confident, to say the least. Zyk at least seemed perfectly at ease in his dark jeans and white button up. Though no amount of human attire was going to keep the tall stallion from standing out in a crowd. It wasn't just the angular bone structure or the coloration in his skin. It was also the commanding air that seemed to surround him.

He followed Ever as he bounded through the portal, hands in his pockets, a lingering smile seemingly glued to his face. It remained as they reached their destination and were given the run down on the task they would be preforming. It lingered as changed from one set of undesirable garments to another. And it lingered as Ever leaned in to hiss in his ear. "I am not certain," he'd murmur back, giving a slender wrist a faint brush before they were set to work.

His creature was was a primate, a chimp. Dark skin and dark hair covering disproportionate limbs. It looked up at him with dark, near intelligent eyes, and Zyk gave it nothing in return.

As Ever went about jubilantly mixing things together with no cause or consideration, Zyk settled to give his ingredients a careful look through. Each and every one examined individually before he began mixing things as well. What he ended with was a substance that was devoid of color. Not merely black, but null, and it carried a heavy scent of sulfur that made even his nose burn.

Curiously, he loaded the substance into a syringe and inserted the tip of the needle into his subject. However, before he had managed to full empty it, a hard bump to his side sent the needle smashing over the floor. It left him reigning back a vicious snarl at the offending mare, utterly furious as the vitals on the chimp peeked, briefly, before easing back into normal rhythms.

"That smells terrible." Ever said it in a matter of fact way that wasn't exactly kind -- but it wasn't cruel, either. It was just thoughtful, listening to the sounds of the chimps and wrinkling his nose at the rotten egg smell coming from Zyk's station. In his hands, he held the survey form, slightly crumpled in his hands.

"Did it work?"

"It did not have the chance to," he answered sourly, still glaring at the one that had bumped him until she had backed away and left to busy themselves somewhere else for a while.

It left Zyk with a chance to give it another go though this time he would go a slightly different route. Instead of the dark ichor he had created the first time around, this time the solution was a soft blue color with a pale hazy quality to it, and had no discernible scent at all. For confirmation of that fact he'd glance sidelong to the scavenger at the station beside him.

This time wen he injected his subject the plunger had been depressed completely. For a moment there was no reaction, then the monitors began to spike oddly. The chimp's eyes widened, muscles tensing as it threw itself at the the front of it's cage, grunting and groaning, breaths coming erratically. This seemed to last for a moment or so, then the motions began to slow, the chimp staggering against the bars until finally it collapsed to the floor of it's cage. Another handful of seconds, and the monitors flat lined completely.

With this much more satisfactory result, Zyk smiled. "Much better."

While he worked, Ever bounced and shifted and fidgeted around him, eyebrows pulled together and head tipped just slightly to one side. It didn't quite put him in the way, didn't quite make Zyk's job harder, but it was a close thing. maybe if Zyk hadn't been quite so used to Ever's distracted nature, like a moth or a butterfly, Once he was done, Ever clapped, the ring in his bracelet rattling just a little with the gesture.

"Perfect. Let's leave."

Before they could, though, he had to answer the survey. He made Zyk read it aloud to him and record his answers:

Name & Job: Ever, Laboratory Guy

Did you enjoy your work today? It would have been better if I could have picked up the little monster before it died.

Would you like to be considered for permanent employment in this branch? No, no way, my man.

Did you see or hear anything unusual during this test? It smelled like nothing in here, except the potions.

Do you trust Bates Diagnostics? Why not?

Zyk was entirely used to Ever's hovering, flighty presence when he was working. He was like background noise, present, but easy enough to tune out when it suited him.

Though now that he was finished, his attention was free to return to the blonde, and he'd lay a hand on a pale shoulder to keep him from leaving before they had finished things up completely. He would read the questions allowed, and after jotting down answers for Ever, he'd fill them out for himself as well.

Name & Job: Zyk, Lab tech

Did you enjoy your work today? It was satisfying.

Would you like to be considered for permanent employment in this branch? Possibly, dependent upon hours and required tasks.

Did you see or hear anything unusual during this test? Neither.

Do you trust Bates Diagnostics? I trust very few, though they have thus far given no reason to distrust.

"Alright." Both papers were were collected and handed in, and Zyk waved Ever out the door. "Where to next?"
