It was midafternoon by the time Alassiel decided it was time to take a break from hunting to settle down and eat. They found a nice quiet spot by a shallow watering hole and Rygha settled right into it and closed his eyes. He was a lazy boy, but Alassiel adored him. He was here if she needed him and he’d never given her any trouble growing up. Well, except that one time he snuck into her bag and she’d almost been labeled a thief. Still, as she watched him now eyes closed and sunbathing in the water, she adored his toothy little face.
A large familiar bird sound rang through the forest; Alassiel paused food half way to her mouth and glanced around. Even Rygha opened up one eye to look around and make sure Ally was okay. After a few silent minutes, Alassiel went back to eating and Rygha closed his eye again settling deeper into the muddy floor. The thunderous sound of giant wings flapping was the only warning Alassiel had before the Suhurama landed heavily upon her. She’d grasped her trident but with the bird on her back it was hard to move at all. Rygha pulled himself out of the mud, lunging at the bird with a roar. They collided and rolled off of Alassiel in a jumble but not before the shifter was sent sailing through the air.
The shifter landed hard against a tree, slumping and then getting back up once she noticed a second Suhurama had joined the fight. Rghya roar in anger, snapping at one but feeling the claws of another on his backside. Alassiel ran over, trident aimed at the first Suhurama. Her first blow missed, it had gone right through the feathers of the bird and not hit bone at all. Rhgya worked on the other bird, snapping at it and keeping it away from Alassiel.
Still, his rider could see the blood streaking from his wounds. Alassiel threw another attack at the bird, this time aiming for the soft stomach, she missed and it flew up away from her aim to get some speed. Bird and shifter collided in a heap, Alassiel lost her breath but kept moving if she didn’t want to die. Her trident was out of reach and so she tried pulling herself across the ground to snatch it back. Her hand grabbed it just before the bird dragged her back and then Alassiel plunged the trident deep into its chest.
It gave one final sound before collapsing. Alassiel rolled out of the way, body aching and screaming at her. Rygha was still fighting and she took one good look at the fight before running into it. She grabbed onto the saddle and pulled herself up as best she could while the two continued to move and fight. With Alassiel on top, she whistled and the trotter took off in the opposite direction almost throwing his rider off in the process.
The shifter urged him on until she spotted a place they could fit under a tree, the bird would not be able to track them from the skies this way. Jumping off, Alassiel’s leg gave away and she almost didn’t make it. Rygha entered the hole and curled upon himself as Ally joined him. They heard the sound of wings and waited it out. It was time to go home.
