Quote:
Backdated to April 21st.

The beach waxed and waned under the slow, rhythmic waves. Tide drew out far from shore lately, exposing the myriad sea life that had no business straying so close to the edge of the water. There, children ran close to crabs and shells and seaweed knots to poke at pieces of a world not their own. And worried parents came rushing after, chanting names, chanting warnings, before scooping their kids away from another pinched finger or another poisoned barb. Elex watched from his perch on the edge of the pier as two men prodded a dead jellyfish back into the sea. They shouted with care to the kids who drew near, and themselves took precaution around the trailing tentacles. Soon, its body washed away on salty tides.

The sun bore down with its usual blistering heat. It rode harder on those who recently swam in the ocean, who lacked the necessary sunscreen to protect against the radiation. no layer of smog hung over the beach like in the city — they lacked that manner of cover from the sun's gaze. For this, Elex was lucky that his brother remembered the SPF 90 Banana Boat spray from the back of the car. Some of the rest of the beach-goers lacked that luxury, he noted, as he looked from cooked lobster back to fleshy pink faces.

Today, his father was sober. Today, he worked not on his boat, but instead spent his precious hours on removal of some sea life. A particularly boisterous storm from the previous night left a pair of manatees washed ashore. The great beast sported an astonishing weight, and numerous other wildlife conservationists surrounded their grey masses. Somewhere beyond the spectacle, his mother stood with a glass frozen in hand, her usual signature to accentuate her usual nails and her usual hair, and she spoke to a shorter woman who took note of the spectacle. A reported, Elex supposed. There would be a charity event for this, too. Beach Conservation Fundraiser, they would call it. His mother would have it marketed with narwhal toothpicks and shark attack cocktails flavored with blue rum and grenadine syrup.

Elex stood and wrapped his loose, airy shirt about himself. The pier stretched a good distance out toward the ocean, but the isolation of it left him unable to people-watch effectively. Padding up the warm, old logs, Elex swept his gaze out toward the rest of the beach. Children played with sand castles and lurid plastic buckets. Men and women sunned themselves on sun-bleached towels. Teens his age and older played at booze while their parents looked off without worry.

The manatees were pushed inevitably toward the ocean.

Maybe he could find someone he knew among the slowly-growing crowd around the beasts. No one looked familiar by the backs of their heads, he found, but the wealthy often gathered where they could find more influence. It wouldn't take long, he supposed.

Connie walked along the beach, taking a break from the early morning work to relax for a bit. She was enjoying the warm sun and cool breeze of the April day, not too cold but not too hot. Not helping but to let out a huge grin.

While the sounds of seagulls and waves seemed to fight between the far off voices of people. Sporting a over-sized white t-shirt with it's sleeves rolled up, and a cactus print front and center. With black shorts to match her black and white Converse.

Connie stretched and let out a bit of a yawn and then a groan as she got closer to the pier and, she assumed, people.

Though her smile quickly returned as she noticed familiar black locks, though it took her a little bit of getting closer to be sure. "Elex!" She yelled, giving a big wave of the arm.

Elex snapped from his thoughts at the sound of his name, and looked over the beachgoers to spot the source. He needed little time to do it; Connie stood out well enough with her ombre hair showcasing a brilliant carmine at their tips. Squinting towards her, he offered his own short wave from where he stood. While the pier was wrong, sandaled feet crossed over its dehydrated wood in little time. Soon he met the sand, and the first warm waves of it spilled between his toes with a certain familiarity. He wondered, then, if there were beaches in America that sported the same smooth rocks as the Riviera.

Shelving those thoughts, he approached her. "Hello, Connie." His smile remained smartly in his eyes while he took in her choice of clothing at a glance - bike shorts and an oversized cactus tee. A remnant from adventures to the southwest or beyond, he supposed. "It looks like a fine day for saving the ocean. Mother wants to hold a congratulatory party for it. How many glasses of champagne do you think it's worth? One, two, five?" Were the men moving the manatees dreaming of the reward before they ever laid eyes on it?

How unsurprising.

Skirting her, he started toward the coastline where sand met ocean tide. The sea breeze flowed around them both liberally, stirring up her hair more than his, and casting his open shirt about with no care for its construction. He liked the look of the horizon line far more than the anxious plight to return sea life to the sea.

"It's been a while since we talked." The waves rolled in, taking in some abandoned plastic shovels and buckets before dragging them out toward the endless blue. "Have you learned anything new about your relatives here?"

Connie couldn't help but smile at the return wave, no matter how small, just hoping that today would be a more relaxing and liberal time for them to talk. Not at a stuffy party where everyone was glued to her family, not that it had mattered as much to her once Elex whisked her away, though she had gotten a small earful from her parents. She took it lightly as they weren't around much anyway and even lightly so now that she could protect herself even better..

Her smile softened but her attention was brought back with Elex's words of another party. She laughed again though, joining in playfully. "Surely enough to drink away the feeling of the sand in their shorts."
She watched him and the sea, listening to the waves between the moments, as the ocean's sound took over now that they were much closer. Though she couldn't help but fill a chill at his next question. Connie had been so busy since they last spoke that she was sure it showed, even if just slightly. How many nights now had it been that she place warm tea bags under her eyes to help with the bags?

The words played around in her head as she tried to place them without giving herself up. Connie's brow crinkled slightly as she played with her small silver and Lapis Lazuli gemed ring on her right hand. "I've found some tips, I think..." She laughed and added playfully, "I hope so anyway. This city is very interesting and playful."

If only they could be so lucky.

Connie's comment had him glancing over toward the distant shapes, whimsical in the ways they carried themselves, yet remarkably purposeful. The scene looked like a strange contradiction of itself - both organic and subtly planned - but there remained enough context to predict the outcome. Someone would cross the threshold into poor social choices, too much drink. Someone else would suss out the raw charm in that. They'd disappear for a while, hide amongst the sprigs of grass and washed-up logs. They'd reappear later with a renewed thirst.

Were they both cynics to recognize that at such a young age? The question left him wondering.

His attention snapped back to Connie, to the unsolicited fidgeting with her hand. A stone, silver and daring as the sea, stared back at him. Against the backdrop of her outfit, the ring remained a staunch reminder that she shouldn't be confused for the other beachgoers. Such reminders suited her - warnings as they were, to avoid taking her lightly and assuming her personage.

"Playful." He shrugged, an easy gesture with the wind at his back. "I haven't heard it described that way before. What's playful about it?" Maybe it's all in the way the city lights up with conflict at night.

He turned back toward the ocean with a short beckon for her company. "I always found it a little stormy."

apologies for the long wait. i understand if you'd rather not continue this one or would prefer a quick wrap. just needed some time to refocus!

Connie couldn't help but feel a smirk at his question but sadness with his comment. "I suppose it would be stormy for some.." She sighed lightly, letting her brow crinkle under the thought before shaking it away.
Connie knew he was right to question her, of course it was playful to someone new, surely one day she wouldn't like it at much or even dread what she had become. But she knew it was part of the history, her history, she needed to found it.
"Oh well, the best way to get through storms are with friends right?" She asked with a smile.
At least she considered Elex a friend. Not that she knew him all that well but he was interesting and playful in his own way. He made her think deeper, even if she didn't show it.

Stormy for some. She could be right. The city's still a metropolis. People aren't moving out in droves based on youma attacks and too-powerful teens. Maybe the scope of the war's impact is so small that it's really only those involved that are making themselves mierable.

Maybe for the rest, the sideline fight is inconsequential. Maybe it doesn't matter at all.

"You have a point." Elex conceded his thoughts to the sand. "We've been a lot of places. Any given place will have its own charm. Maybe I haven't found Destiny City's yet." Elex turned, and in walking backward, looked out toward the horizon line. Great, sandy mounds crowned with beach-endemic flora guarded his view of the city. Beyond that, forestry concealed its vision.

"My parents are always nagging me to make friends anyway." And his brother, who probably conceived a few ideas about them already. It wouldn't surprise him in the slightest — disappearing with Connie during a fundraiser, then running off with her on the beach made a few implications. He turned once more to look back at the ocean. He couldn't be blamed if better company was found in the younger generation than in the drunkards at his back. They taught themselves to hate thought, to reject reason.

"Want to go for a swim?" The deep tides were grounding enough. In an ocean, there wasn't need for words.

Connie watched him, smirking a bit at the word charm. Is that what it was? She had been many places as well and she did like most of them in some way, but she never connected much.. Maybe that's more what it was, connection..

She couldn't help but light up at his friend comment. Laughing a bit. "At least I'm not the only one being nagged." Connie smiled, sketching her arms over her head. It was the prefect weather, right between spring and summer, but a bit windy. Though when was the beach not? Why was she even thinking this over?

"Sure! Let's go!" She grinned, pulling off her over-sized t shirt, so she was in her swimming top and slider shorts. Then shoving off her converse, trying not to trip herself. Pulling up her massive hair while she waited on him, sticking her tongue out at him.

Connie looked relazed, easygoing, comfortable. He chanced a look back toward the beach rescue, where only the drunk and uninformed held a similar, more natural poise. He sighed through his nose. Do we have a choice to leave that behind? The question lingered as he looked back to Connit, watched her stretch her shadow down the sunlit beach.

Connie cast aside her shirt at once, half-caught in the breeze, and sprinted toward the ocean with more carefree spirit than Elex oft allowed himself to show. He shook his head lightly against the antics. She could teach me something about having fun. And while she waited, perhaps eagerly so for his accompaniment, he chose his own devilish payback. He slipped his shirt over narrow shoulders carefully, folded it, set it against the shallow, sandy dunes. He found a suitable rock to anchor it against the wind, and a second for Connie's discarded article. Then he slipped his sandals, set them aside in an almost a**l fashion.

When he finished dragging out the affair as much as humanly possible, he chased after her, past her, and dove for the sea.

Connie laughed as she watch Elex carefully put everything into place and playfully called for him to hurry up. She wondered too, if maybe he would relax more over time. She shook her head, they had just met overall. Only to be left surprised when suddenly dove in past her, spraying the water all around them. It was a good day. She smiled.
