Name: Lenix
Age: 16
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Craft: Weaver
Rank: Apprentice (Tapestry-making)
Location: High Reaches Weyr
Physical Description: Lenix has all-around athletic build, about 5’9” with particularly muscular thighs from running on foot while his master rode a runnerbeast during their numerous hunts. His jawline is strong, and his hands are masculine with square tipped fingers. He has the looks of a canine pup – snub-nosed with wide, dark eyes and a guileless smile. His head is topped with thick dark brown hair that chooses its own part every morning.
Personality: Len is a sweet, fairly innocent fellow for having lived as a servant his entire life. Really, he lucked out with his assigned charge – Karone, a boy of roughly the same age, who was as much of a friend as a master. He is down to earth and accepting of others, thinking little of himself, and does his duty without complaint.
Very alert to his surroundings, Lenix observes details through all of his senses, and is capable of comprehending two, sometimes three conversations at a time – skills developed through a childhood of service, waiting on nobility and looking for something to keep himself entertainined during the more dreary events he’s had to sit through. He’s lost count of how many times he literally had to stand around doing nothing during a meal or party, being required to wait in readiness for when he was needed.
His most prominent strength is a knack for anything physical, he learns by mimicking what he sees others do or by “feeling it out.” For example, he’s picked up some dance steps and a few fencing moves from Karone, and learned how to ride a runnerbeast by sitting on the back of one and sensing how it responded to him. He’s never had the opportunity to focus and hone any one skill learned in this manner, so what little he knows is useless trade-wise, but helps in the day-to-day routine. In one case, he’s learned how to bake his favorite fruit pies just as well as the cook, but has no idea how to prepare anything else. His all-roundness has earned him the tongue-in-cheek nickname of “Supreme Drudge,” courtesy of Karone. Len is great with physical tasks and recall of personal memories, but conversely, ask him to do maths or recite historical dates and places, and he will fail miserably, though he can easily remember the people and their actions in those events. The rest is just not important in his mind. He avoids studying whenever possible.
Lenix’s only offically-apprenticed skill, learned from a resident Journeyman, is weaving. It is his favorite escape from routine, and he enjoys making tapestries of scenes in bright colors. He is a bit of a daydreamer in his free time, and will often sneak himself into the scenes as a masked hero, true identity unknown but loved by all. His favorite colors are red, black, and white, and they often have large areas to shine in his works.
His greatest difficulty thus far has been breaking free of servitude. He has a hard time saying no to any task put to him, and has developed a sort of fealty to his lifelong charge, Karone. Thus far, he has never dared to aspire to more because it was never an option for him. However, he comes from the same bloodline as his charge. The potential for independence and perhaps even leadership is there, and he may someday face the opportunity and rise to it – he just needs the right catalyst to spark the flame.
Positive Trait List Mindful, moldable, loyal, athletic
Negative Trait List Passive, stuck-in-a-rut, self-indulgent
History: A bit of a black sheep where he came from, Lenix was an illigitimate child. He was somehow related to Dusiph, a minor Holder. Never considered a member of the family, Lenix was kept in Dusiph’s household as an orphan ward to prevent slanderous rumors. He happened to be close in age to Dusiph’s third son Karone, and thus was assigned to him as an attendant. The two grew up with a mixed relationship both as friends and as master and servant. They were never told of their blood ties.
When Thread fell for the first time in over a thousand Turns, Dusiph’s hold was completely unprepared and lost a majority of its people. Dusiph lost all of his relatves except for his son Karone. Desperate to be certain that his holdings would stay within the family, Dusiph revealed that Lenix was actually his nephew and began looking for bride for both boys so that more heirs could be produced as soon as possible. Karone was a desirable bachelor, but few families of any rank would consider a ward like Lenix as a good marriage prospect, especially during such chaotic times. Dusiph managed to find an easy mark in a cotholder whose settlement was still fairly undamaged, but whose daughter was already into her thirties.
As luck would have it, Lenix escaped this arranged marriage to the much older woman by being Searched, gratefully taking his place among the Candidates at High Reaches Weyr. It so happened that Karone was Searched at that same time, and he also went to High Reaches. The culture shock was immense: suddenly, as cousins and now Candidates in a weyr where rules were different, master and servant were considered equal. Not only equal, but with the uncertainty of who would and who wouldn’t Impress, there was a distinct possibility that Lenix could wind up a dragonrider, and Karone might not. The thought was both exciting and terrifying to him, so he stopped thinking about it and threw himself into his work.
It was easy for Lenix to fall into the duties of a Candidate, those being not too different than what he was used to back home. It was also easy for him to continue doing what he’d done all his life – the task of serving Karone. Lenix was discouraged from this behavior a few times, even by Karone himself, but he remained faithful. As far as any witness could tell, it appeared that he chose to do this without any compulsion on Karone’s part.
At present, though they naturally maintain their familiar status quo, the two boys are still experiencing a lot of internal strife from the tragedy at home, the revelation of their blood ties, and adjusting to their new life at High Reaches. Len’s world is expanding, and now that he knows he is Karone’s cousin, he has begun to wonder who his parents are and if they are still living.
