Unlike the majority of the guardians in Death, Aric was not a stoic faced, quiet minded individual who spend most of his time scowling and generally looking displeased with the world. He was an amicable, enjoyable person who loved his job and had an enthusiasm for entertainment and pleasure.
Owl was, unfortunately, the recipient of most of Aric's enthusiasm.
"To the training fields!" he said jovially, half towing his friend across the grass. "We shall get to work on getting you those muscles you need!"

Owl wasn't big on the idea of training. He didn't need muscles for most of what he did, and muscles in general were not on the list of prioritized features for his clan anyway. Flesh in any regard was not exactly a prioritized feature. Brute force was a hopeless last resort for someone of his inclinations and skill set. What did matter to him was quick thinking, stealth, and accuracy. Trailing along behind Aric, the quiet Famine horseman blinked at their surroundings and remained silent. In that regard he was very much like his namesake, with his large, pale eyes, and tendency towards careful observance before action. "Training how?" He finally asked, his voice soft. It was the sort of voice that something small and fluffy wouldn't even run from.

If Aric knew that Owl didn't really want to train, he didn't show it. Or maybe he was just ignoring it, because that was also an option, especially since Aric tended to just want to go and do rather than sit around debating what to do. He happily tugged his best friend along, reaching out every so often to pat the other's head, mostly to make sure he was still there.
It wouldn't have surprised him if Owl simply chose to disappear conveniently, after all.
"For anything!" said Aric brightly. "You should know how to defend yourself, is that not how things go?"

Owl shook his head. For some horsemen he would have left it at that, but Aric was one of few who had worked their way into Owl's little circle of trust. His words were less guarded, even though they were always deliberate, and very quiet. "I run," he stated simply, unbothered by how those actions might have been interpreted. He knew what sort of creature he was. "I hide. And then I do what needs to be done." Those pale eyes glanced up at Aric. "You don't need to run."

Aric stopped, if only because Owl's voice was very quiet and sometimes he needed to actually slow down in order to hear him. It wasn't done out of annoyance; Aric had already accepted this fact, just like he'd already accepted that Owl was pretty much his favorite person besides his priestess.
"You cannot always run!" said Aric, eyes wide. "You should fight, too! Fighting will make you strong!"
He clapped a jovial hand on Owl's shoulder, which he used to propel him forward once more.
"Come, little bird, I will teach you to defend!"

"You can throw sand, then run," Owl replied into the folds of his cowl, rather matter-of-factly. Survival wasn't about arbitrary rules of engagement, it was about making it to the next day. Yet he didn't resist the firm hand on his back. This was a learning opportunity whether he planned on using Aric's techniques or not. One day he might be throwing sand at someone like his giant friend, and knowing their key to defense would help him find the right place to put a knife. "Teach me," he agreed, trotting a couple steps ahead of Aric's friendly push.

Aric gave Owl a look.
"Throwing sand is not always the best strategy to use. I mean, if it works, that is good, little bird, but you cannot always hope that it will. Famine is notorious for not even having eyes."
Owl was given a sage nod as the pair finally reached the training grounds. Aric held up a hand, palm held out in the other's direction.
"Okay, little bird, hit my hand. As hard as you can."

"The sand could be spiders," Owl replied cryptically. His face gave away nothing, but it was clear those big, unblinking eyes had seen some things... Arriving on the field, Owl did as he was bid. He gave Aric a decent hi-5. Then he looked up at his tall friend, awaiting instructions for training.

There was a long moment in which Aric stared at Owl and Owl probably stared at Aric and there was probably a tumbleweed or something that rolled by between them.
"Owl," said Aric patiently. "Let us try that one more time. A little harder."

After a quizzical look, Aric got a superbly fierce hi-5.
