The night was his domain, and he reveled in it. Most creatures were asleep at this time, preferring to be active during the day, but Nott found that he worked best at night. It probably had something to do with his fur, dark and sleek as it was, but that suited him just fine. There was no one to really bother him at this time of night, and it was easier to hunt prey when they were asleep. He just had to find them first.

Black paws moved silently across the grass, the lion shifting from shadow to shadow without a sound. Every now and then, he would stop to sniff the ground, trying to pick up the scent of something, anything nearby. It was probably impractical of him, hunting this late, but.... There! Ears pricked up at the scent and he flicked his eyes in the direction it was going. It smelled like a small rodent of some sort, probably not big enough to really make a meal out of. It was better than nothing though, and he could always keep hunting afterwards. He had all night, after all!

That thought in mind, Nott gave a soft, almost inaudible growl and slunk towards the origin of the scent he'd found, his tail brushing the grass in a smooth back-and-forth motion that showed how pleased he was with finding his catch.

The dark, winged marked male strolled across the quiet savannah. He wasn't up to anything particular this night. Yayauhqui tended to favor the darker hours and those just before and just after. The sun he found much too bothersome on his coat. And he blended in so well it was foolish not to. He rather liked creeping through the brush and none around him noticing. It was like spying on secret lives.

He noted the scent and sounds of a small rodent. Not that he was particularly hungry, and it sounded pathetically small, to be going after a rodent. The lion wondered if there'd be anything interesting to see this night. With most animals asleep, there wasn't as much to watch. Well he could creep up on the rodent and give it the scare of it's life! Slowly he moved closer, pinpointing the sounds.

Nott slowed down as the scent got closer. Shifting into a crouch, he inched his way towards the sound of soft squeaks that showed the rodent breathing. Finally, he spotted it! A mouse, by the looks of it. So definitely not a good meal... but he'd come this far! He wasn't about to turn back now. It was a very foolish mouse too, he decided. Not only had it not found shelter, but it was completely oblivious to the danger it was in. 'Well whatever. Just makes it easier for me.'

He was close enough now that a single, fast leap would be enough to end it. Better to end this quickly so he could move on to another hunt. Inwardly, he amused himself with the thought of this being a "midnight snack", but he was completely focused on the outside. (So focused that he hadn't noticed another shape nearby...) The black lion took a deep breathe and flexed his claws silently in preparation for the kill. Then, after a seconds pause, he tensed and pushed off with strong back paws, claws flashing as he flew through the air towards his target.

They gonna, as they say... run into each other? :'D

Hahah yes!

Yayauhqui moved very slowly and very carefully. Small rodents could so easily take startle before the game was up. Even though he didn't plan to kill it he still had to creep with all of his concentration. He had to control his breathing and every tiny movement of his paws. The rodent was quite close now.

He paused to gather himself for the spring. Ready..... Set...... Jump! It was only when he was fully committed to his leap that he realized close by there was another lion. Exactly mirroring his movement, but they were now on a collision course with the mouse at the end of their leaps. He couldn't believe another lion had been that close and he didn't know it! Right now though, he needed to focus on not crashing with said other lion. Yayauhqui twisted in the air trying to change his trajectory just a little bit.

Nott realized his mistake at about the same time the other lion had. His face melted from ferocity into shock, and he had enough time to retract his claws and try to backpedal in the air (unfortunately to no avail) before the world exploded in pain as the two lions crashed into each other. "Oof!" The black lion barely registered the faint squeak of the mouse somewhere below them - that was maybe it's furry little body slipping by his paw? - as they landed in a heap on the ground.

Nott had ended up on his side, dazed and confused. Giving himself a shake to get his bearings again, he lifted his head in time to see the mouse scurry away to disappear into the grass. He huffed, annoyed that his hunt was interrupted, and decided to see what this new problem was that had landed at his paws.

Scrambling up to his feet, he swiftly dropped into a crouch and stared with narrowed yellow-green at the male next to him.

His evasive maneuvers did little to prevent what was to come. Yayauhqui made a grunt as the two males collided bodily into a space only meant for one. He was sprawled beside the other, legs going in every direction as he shook his head slowly to clear it. Nothing broken there. Slowly he went through his sections and determined that though he might be bruised there was no lasting harm.

Yayau slowly pulled his paw under him and then stood up slowly with a chuckle. "Apologies friend. If I'd known the mouse was claimed, I would have left it." That would teach him not to play with his food, or not his food. He watched the other drop into a wary crouch. "I mean no harm." He would move if the other attacked, but he first wanted to prove he hadn't meant to interrupt.

He eyed the other lion, a little unsure whether to believe that he didn't mean any harm, and then slowly relaxed back down. It did seem like it was an honest mistake, and to be fair, Nott hadn't even noticed him there either. They both had dark coats, both hunting at night, and likely neither would have even known the other was there if not for that mouse.

So, with a flick of his tail, the black lion pushed himself back up to a standing position and nodded. "It's fine. It would've been a small snack anyway." He cocked his head to the side, "I didn't know someone else was hunting around here too. It's not often I come across a night hunter like myself." A lot of lions had bright or at least lighter colored coats, and sometimes even the ones with darker fur preferred doing things in the day.

Yayauhqui watched and waited. Eventually the other relaxed, and he breathed a little easier. He nodded, "a very small snack. It hardly seems worth the effort." He eyed the other lion speculatively. The male didn't seem in any distress that he couldn't hunt larger game that would be more filling.

A sheepish grin crossed his face. "Ah.... well. Actually I wasn't really trying to hunt it. I was only going to scare it, which I think we've done quite well. If I'd know someone was intending to eat it, I'd have left it alone. Why were you hunting it?" Yayau came right out and asked. He considered the statement of being a night hunter, then just shrugged. "It just seems to be what works for me."

Nott hummed at his question before shrugging, "Haven't had very good luck at finding anything bigger tonight." He huffed, a little annoyed at the implications that he shouldn't have needed to. Food was food, and even a small snack to tide himself over was worth it to him right now. Better to have some energy than to run on none. He didn't say anything to add to what he'd already said though, admittedly a little embarrassed that he couldn't find anything bigger. Not that he'd ever divulge that.

He could fully understand how hunting at night would work for this other lion too though. With his dark coat, it was probably for the same reason as him. So he gave a short nod, "I'm about the same. It's easier for me to hunt at night. Harder for prey to see what's coming."

Flicking a black ear, he took a slow glance around him, hoping that maybe there would be something else to hunt. It looked like he would have to travel somewhere else though. If there had been something, it must have been scared off by their collision.

Fin?

Yayauhqui settled himself down and wrapped his tail around his haunches. They were two very different circumstances he could tell. This male considered any kind of meat edible. Yayau wouldn't generally hunt anything small unless he was crippled injured. He thought about it and realized it was all perspective. He wasn't hungry enough to consider something that small worth the effort of chasing. Although given how close both of them had gotten to the mouse, there wasn't too much energy expended.

"You're right, now that you mention it and I think about it. Something must have scared the big prey off." He sighed. That meant he'd probably have an empty belly tonight. Unless he took this new lesson to heart and started hunting small things. Mmmm maybe he wasn't that desperate yet. He nodded with agreement to the other lion, "aye and much cooler! I dislike panting in the searing sun." Yayau didn't like getting overheated for no reason, and the days were hot enough he would just by being out in the sun.

He sat for a moment in silence. There really didn't seem anything else to say. The male noted the other's covert glance around, and almost flushed guiltily. "Ah well. Perhaps I should go and leave you to get on with your hunting." Truly he'd only be in the way.

Nott glanced back over at the other lion, humming in agreement about the heat. Another good reason for hunting at night. And it was interesting to know that he wasn't alone in his desire for the darker hours. He'd have to be careful during his prowling from here on out. There was sure to be others like this too, and next time it might not be a small mouse that he'd lose.

The black lion cocked his head as he noted that he seemed almost embarrassed now. Was it about the pouncing mishap? Honestly, he was already starting to brush that off... But he would prefer to be on his way anyway. The night was young, but it would pass soon and he at least wanted to find something to sate his hunger. It might not be much, or he might end up with an empty belly, but it was still worth a shot.

So with a shrug and a nod, he stretched out his front legs and then his back, before settling back out with a shake of his head. "I'd like to see if I can find anything else before morning," he paused, trying to decide if he should offer for the other lion to come along, but decided that he was better on his own. "Perhaps we'll cross paths again in the future. Happy hunting."

Then, with a flick of his tail, he turned and began stalking back into the night.

magnadearel
Yeah, probably. I feel bad for Yayauhqui, but on his own, Nott is really kinda anti-social. xD;; Maybe they can run into each other again later, with Hiccup, who'll pretty much force him to be nice.
