Write a short post about parts of a plant, naming three and going into a small bit of detail about your favorite!
T'kani flipped through her notes from the lecture, picking a few parts that she had doodled sketches for, before starting her assignment.
In plant anatomy, the calyx is the structure that forms around the flower as it develops, and is made up of individual leaves called sepals. These leaves not only protect the flower while it is a bud, but also support the flower petals once it has bloomed. After the plant has flowered, the calyx will usually wither away or become otherwise useless. In some cases however, the calyx will develop into an accessory fruit, which is different from fruit that develops from the plant's ovary.
Roots serve many purposes in the plants that grow them; they absorb and transport water and nutrients to the rest of the plant, act as both an anchor and rigid structure, and store food and nutrients. In some plants, roots are used for a type of reproduction, where a new plant will grow some distance away from its parent through the root.
Leaves contain chloroplasts, which are the power source for plants. They convert the dim light of Below, or abundant light of Above, into usable compounds that the rest of the plant can use to grow and survive. These are perhaps my favorite, as it is interesting to note that plants in Below can be grown in Above; they are better suited for the low-energy environment, but otherwise are functionally identical. This suggests that at some point plants were able to move between both worlds.
Checking over the assignment, she corrected a few small issues, then got up and turned in the paper to the cute professor, before making her way out of the classroom.
