It had been a while since Kyril was in Matori and so far it seemed as if nothing had changed. The ocean still rolled in with the evening tides and the sun still made gorgeous glimmers across the ocean waves. It was both beautiful and sad at the same time for Kyril. Beautiful in the fact that she could still find inspiration from the waves, but sad because being back in Matori had caused her to say goodbye to the friends she had made while in Oba and Sauti. Not that it’s forever. She would go back in the future that was for certain. For now though she had to help prepare their expanding house for the newest arrivals. A bigger house for a bigger family. Kyril smiled at the thought. She was going to be a big sister soon!

While the boys worked on actually building the extra rooms on the house Kyril had decided to take a stroll. Normally she helped out more, but today her family had shooed her off to make her take a break from all the work. Of course her mind hadn’t stopped since she was already walking along the shore picking up whatever shells appealed to her. It would all be nice decorations for the rooms! I can make some nice ornaments or a windchime with these for the little ones to listen to while they try to sleep.

Yunan was spending his afternoon once more on the beach. While his aunt and father both visited the markets the boy had offered to stay home. He could prepare the evening meal and also take the morning to do his own studies. Studies of people, of weather, of even swordplay. Smirking the hybrid raised his sword in a perfect arc and studied how the sunlight glimmered from the silver blade. His stance was exact. Swinging the blade down Yunan took a few steps forward as if attacking an invisible enemy.

One swing, a twist forward, and a dodge, hah! His gaze narrowed as he stabbed the blade forward. That wasn’t so hard. Soon enough he would have to ask his father to start sparring with him. But would the old man be able to keep up? Yunan smirked in amusement before finding himself pausing. Was someone else here? Ever so slowly the boy turned on his heel until he spotted another figure on what he had previously thought to be a secluded beach.

She hadn’t meant to stop and stare, truly. Kyril’s cheeks flushed as the strange boy suddenly stopped practicing to instead glance her way. As much as she wanted to just turn her gaze away and leave the girl couldn’t help staring at him instead. He was a strange looking matori just like her. Another hybrid. And a rather attractive one who knew how to wield a sword at that.

Feeling rather awkward the girl slowly raised a hand before offering a wave.

Yunan rose a brow at the stranger’s expression. Was she studying him? A small smirk flickered across his features as he noticed an obvious flush going across the other hybrid’s cheeks, “May I help you?” He asked as he sheathed his sword and walked forward a few steps, “Or do you just prefer to continue staring?” Normally he was very much against talking to others, they were often annoying especially at his age, but at least this girl was cute. And a hybrid at that so it made things a bit more interesting. A hybrid with money by the looks of it. That was some noble’s attire after all. Perhaps she was the daughter of some oban noble who became infatuated wiht a matori? He’d seen a few ‘fathers’ showing of their hybrid children in the market before and wouldn’t be surprised. Even without slavery it didn’t mean that some things weren’t the same as before.

Lowering her hand Kyril glanced at the ground before peeking back up at the other hybrid sheepishly, “I uh...not actually?” Kyril offered him a small smile, “I just wasn’t expecting anyone else to be on this area of the beach so I was startled. Not that I meant to stare, but your swordplay was interesting to watch.” The girl tilted her head thoughtfully as she studied the boy,, “Is that a sword style from Zena? I feel as if I’ve seen that before when I was traveling with family in the north. Which would make sense considering that you seem to be...of that descent?”

Well so much for trying to sound so awkward.

Brushing some sand from his sleeves Yunan nodded, “I suppose then that I’m glad to be of some entertainment to you. It’s better to know that I impressed someone enough to have them staring rather than having someone stopping to laugh at my training.” The boy tossed back a braid over his shoulder as he boldly stared back at the other girl in turn, “And yes it is. Did my pointy ears make it that obvious? Or the blue of my skin?” He teased lightly, “Seems like you are of Oban descent as well. A noble’s daughter perhaps?”

It was a public beach so it shouldn’t surprise him that another would be here, but at the same time Yunan had surely thought that no one else really knew about this part. At least not a visitor, so perhaps she was native to the area? That would be interesting considering he was more accustomed to the oban hybrids living in Oba rather than Matori.

Kyril’s cheeks flushed darker, “I wouldn’t dare! I just uh...well to be honest I’m looking for shells and other treasures on the sands to help decorate my family home. I like to craft and so I came out here where the tidepools are less touched by foreigners.” At his sudden questions the girl took a breath before straightening her shoulders to match his own bold stance, “Ah, yes. I suppose both features made it obvious. The clothing makes it obvious right? But yes, my mother is Oban and inherited a bit of fortune so we’re making the best use of it.” She reached out to touch one of her silk sleeves thoughtfully, “I suppose it would help to tone it down a bit, but she truly enjoys outfitting me. Sometimes I wonder if she wanted a daughter or a doll.”

“Do you live here...in this area? I’ve been gone a few years travelling, but I don’t recall your face from my childhood years.” She smiled politely, “No offense, but you seem to be someone that would stand out.”

“Crafting hm?” Yunan tilted his head in interest, “Do you just paste the shells to walls or something?” He rubbed the back of his neck thoughtfully, “But you are correct as this would be an ideal gathering point.” He had seen shell necklaces and other decorative pieces, but it was curious to see how this girl wished to decorate an actual house with shells. I suppose it’s only fitting considering we live in Matori. A bit iconic, but nothing too horrid.

He raised a brow at how obviously flustered she was, “Ah. We have moved here and there. This has only been my home for the past few years. I suppose we must have moved in when you left.” He smiled, “I’m hoping you mean standout in a good way as would you.” Yunan’s gaze glimmered with amusement, “As it is at least we would recognize each other by appearance since we don’t know names just yet. Should I call you strange shell girl who stares?”

Kyril’s cheeks couldn’t get any hotter, “I make trinkets and also chimes. Since my mother is expecting I was going to help decorate the baby’s room with some artwork and maybe some hanging decorations for the little one to watch when they are born.” It wasn’t like she was an expert artisan, but Kyril did have a little talent with creating things.

And then she realized that she hadn’t introduced herself and her cheeks did indeed get a bit hotter, “Oh! I’m so sorry. My name is Kyril and you are?”

Yunan smiled, “That’s interesting.” The hybrid nodded as he finally moved forward to reach out a friendly hand, something odd for the usually reserved boy. “I’m Yunan, Kyril and it’s a pleasure to meet you. Would you like some help with gathering shells? As you saw I finished my swords training so I’m quite free for this afternoon.”

He wanted to assist? Kyril’s gaze widened in surprise before she slowly nodded, “I suppose if you have the time and are willing then I wouldn’t say no. The less time it takes for me to gather things the more time I can spend on actual crafting.” She glanced at him thoughtfully, “You are being sincere, right? Not that I don’t appreciate the offer! It’s just I...well I don’t know.” How was she supposed to be like, ‘ well I can’t really trust people easily since being kidnapped as a child almost?’ Not the best ice breaker nor was it polite to even hint that the boy could have ulterior motives for helping her. Perhaps he was simply bored.

“If you feel uncomfortable with it then I can leave.” Yunan shrugged his shoulders, “You don’t have to worry about my sincerity. I do enjoy walking along the shoreline so stopping to pick up a few shells here and there won’t kill me.” The hybrid smirked towards Kyril, “If you’re so worried about what I can gain from this then simply tell me more about yourself. I’m sure you probably have an interesting history of your own all things considered.”

“My history?” Kyril blinked in surprise, “You want to learn more about my background, really?” The girl offered him a small smile, “Then I suppose that won’t be such a heavy price to pay. Though I’m sure your history is probably just as intriguing if not more so than mine.” She smiled teasingly, “After all how does someone like you end up in Matori?”

As she started talking the girl began to move down along the shoreline, “It’s simple truly. My mother and father met after the Oban war and during their travels began to fall for each other. Mother had recently lost her parents and had disputes with an uncle who tried too hard to control her so she home to go travel with her friend, who would later be my father.” She stopped to pick up a strangely shaped shell and studied it for a moment before finally placing it in her basket, “Does that satisfy you?”

Yunan chuckled, “A very brief story.” He picked up a few shells and handed them over to her, “But you are right, I suppose my story is interesting as well. Though I would have to ask you to come back another day when we have more time together.” It was a coy move and his gaze glimmered in amusement at the flush on her cheeks, “So does your family travel constantly now or did they ever settle again?” He wasn’t going to let her off that easily. It seemed that she had something of an interesting history after all. Plus, it was beneficial for him to make more noble connections so that if needed he could climb later and call on those in the upper class as necessary. Obviously he wasn’t friendly like this for no reason. But for a noble girl? He would behave so that he could build those bridges that may come in handy later on.

“Sorry.” Kyril flushed and tucked back a stray strand of hair as she searched along the beach, “I suppose I just feel as if it is a bit too dramatic at times. That and my parents don’t always speak about the past though I know my uncle was a villain. He obviously disapproved of mother’s love interest and tried his hardest to control her.” Even at the cost of Kyril and Koril’s safety. The thought made her brow furrow, “It’s not the most pleasant family experience I’ve ever had so I’m thankful that he is gone now.”

She shook her head, “So we settled in Matori for a while and had some time in Oba before traveling again. Obviously we’re back in Matori now since I’m standing here with you.” She smiled towards him at his obvious implication, “Which since I do live in the area I suppose i could always come back this way again since you’re so eager to save your story for another day.”
